This is our third stay here but will now be our last. It's expensive for what they are offering. Service and general standards have slipped. For example, in the small spa they offer - the shower in the spa area is knackered. No ones bothered to fix it.

My meal in the evening - whilst the rump steak was excellent quality, the vegetables were drowned in butter and had no flavour. My girlfriend reported her meal was very good though. The mini desserts were very good.

Worst thing was breakfast where they seemed to be catering for a large group and put on a hot buffet for everyone forgetting their individual guests. I mean what happened to breakfast to order? Seriously at these prices they are charging?! This is more the thing I expect at a cheap 2 star. It's a shame as their fruit was very nice and freshly squeezed juice. But the whole experience at breakfast was very loud and chaotic. They seemed to be targeting large groups of people now. I later found out that the reason they had a hot buffet was due to groups and not wanting to affect service for other people - sorry not acceptable! The previous two occasions we have had breakfast to order as I would expect at any hotel of this standard. My girlfriend also ordered coffee and as the coffee arrived, her cup was taken away! Also had to ask for toast. Restaurant and breakfast needs much better organisation.

My last comment concerns room cleaning. Not particularly pleasant to walk down the corridor to breakfast and literally walking through trolley after trolley of cleaning materials.

Unfortunately, we won't be returning.

Stayed here as a last minute option. Booked the night before our stay and our room was half the asking price so a great deal. It's a smallish hotel so it you get a more exclusive feel during your stay. All the staff were very helpful... apart from the breakfast crew who seemed quite rude and uninterested, though this didn't ruin our stay.

Breakfast was also a bit of a let down. We have stayed at the Christchurch Harbour Hotel a few times now and find the breakfast there much better. But the evening food at the Captains Club is very very good and not too expensive either would recommend eating there in the evening.

The room was huge, spacious and modern and perfect for what we were looking for. We will be staying here again but may opt to eat breakfast else where.

Very nice modern hotel, spacious clean bedroom overlooking the river,
Really nice relaxed atmosphere with entertainment every night.
Pity the weather was not any better, as lovely location looking over the river.

Room Tip: Looking over the river

Just completed a conference at the Captains Club for my team and we were all thoroughly delighted with every aspect of our stay. I don't remember the last time I had such great service from such genuine and warm staff. The food (breakfast, lunch and dinner) was all great, the rooms are modern comfortable and spacious and the meeting rooms are good too.

A really really good hotel!

We were lucky to book a Late deal for a one night's stay and therefore found the hotel good value for money. The service from booking to departure was excellent, the staff are a huge credit to the hotel. The location within Christchurch is outstanding - river views from all rooms and an easy walk to the local shops and cafes (great variety for either coffee or lunch/evening meal). The Tides restaurant within the hotel is also exceptional and well worth booking - well deserving of the two A rosettes. My only disappointment was the size of the spa (deceptive on the website) in comparison to other spas we have visited. However, in conclusion, would definately return....extremely relaxing and comfortable.

I was very keen to stay here and when a reasonable offer came along I jumped at the chance. However I was disappointed in my stay. Although the setting is wonderful and you can't fault the huge windows and the view; actually the rooms are not that special. They are minimalist which I like but the furniture is not good quality, to look at ok but not that solid or smart. The bed was very uncomfortable and it creaked! Not good for a romantic holiday! When mentioned reception said 'we have had no complaints before'. So if it was just my bed they could have checked.
I had room service which was ok but a bit overpriced and breakfast was ok apart from the waitress jumping in as we said what we wanted and not listening.
The most annoying thing was that the spa was not available that day because of some training event. We had not been told about this in advance and were not offered compensation either. There was only a limited window in which we could use it and that time did not suit us.
I have stayed in many hotels 4 and 5 star and just felt this one is living on its environment rather than the high standard we should expect. It is very pricey, even on an offer and there are nicer hotels around that do better.
I often stay at the Kings which, while it has no spa, has far better service and quality of fittings etc. Will not stay at Captains Club again
