“A great experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 October 2008

We'd decided to take just one night away in October because we wanted to visit Lacock: the Stanton Manor came up as an option and we definitely did the right thing in selecting it. It's an ancient manor house, converted and extended into a very comfortable hotel. Our room was only a basic double, but it was very spacious, with a 6' 6" bed and the bathroom - with corner bath and shower - very smart (the whole place was 'done up' just recently and very tastefully, too, maintaining the period atmosphere, but with all the usual modern comforts, including abundant and very hot water).

The food is excellent. We found a new chef had only just started, but he obviously knows what he's doing; for dinner, we had duck and venison, both of the highest quality and beautifully cooked. And try the pannacotta for pudding - incredibly rich, but to die for! The breakfast was also extremely good: full English with decent quality bacon and the whole thing as unfatty and unoily as it's possible for this occasional self-indulgence to be.

Service is first class: a lovely girl on the desk took our soaking coats away from us and returned them, dried out, the next day, and every member of the staff was pleasant, friendly and efficient.

We'd recommend the Stanton Manor for short stops on a journey East or West (it's just off the M4 - just a bit too close, really, if you had all the windows open, but the grounds are so lovely that we forgave it!). It's also a splendid base for exploring Bath, the Cotswolds (to the North), Avebury, Marlborough etc. It does accommodate conferences, too - there was one on while we were there. but they didn't bother us.

  • Liked — Comfprt, space, cleanliness and good food.
  • Disliked — The M4!

This was the 2nd time I stayed here (1st time was mid-winter & the room was freezing!). The room was a decent size but shabby furniture & road noise from nearby M4 was dissapointing. the shower was a joke - just a slow dribble! Other colleagues in my party suffered same so it wasn't just my room.
Restaurant meal was spoiled by Waiter insisting we pay for a corked bottle of wine because he'd already poured it !
Rest of staff were friendly.

  • Liked — the building has 'charm'
  • Disliked — Waiter attitude, poor shower & road noise.

My wife and I were here for our son's wedding and stayed the night afterwards. We were very impressed.

The staff were efficient, well-organised, friendly, and discreet. The grounds were beautiful and the building full of character. The bar service was excellent and the meals very good.

Our room was a superior room with a 4-poster bed and a beautiful view.

I have often criticised hotels but can really find nothing to say against this place. I would mention thought that if you want a quiet stay, it would be worth checking there isn't a wedding reception taking place (it seems to be in demand for weddings on a lot of Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays).

Also bar prices were pretty high but I suppose that's to be expected.

Overall, excellent.

  • Liked — Beautiful house and grounds, excellent staff
  • Disliked — High bar prices

Just too casual at reception, we were pointed to room and left to find it ourselves and when we could not had to go back and another member of staff insisted to the receptionist on accompanying us! We booked a deluxe room: one towel for two of us, one small bottle of shampoo. no shower cap and no cleansing pads for makeup. one drawer of the dressingtable was broken...Door and window to the garden were locked. We then asked for directions and were told "oh,I wouldn,t know". The night receptionist was a charming man and redeemed the place and was most helpful. Breakfast was fine and the diningroom was lovely looking out on charming gardens though the fruit could have been fresh rather than tinned. Finally I had to ask the receptionist for a receipt on checkout! A nice place but needs to shake itself up and so convenient just off the M4.

  • Liked — lovely area and gardens
  • Disliked — one towel in bathroom

My husband and I recently stayed at this lovely hotel.
From the moment we booked this hotel, we were dealt with efficiently and effectively.
Upon arrival we were greeted by friendly staff, shown to our room and given details of local attractions (they were most knowledgeable). The staff could not have been more helpful while we were there.
Our room was divine; the bed was most comfortable, the bathroom had a lovely bath and shower and ovelooked the beautiful gardens. All in all the room was just perfect.
As for the food; what can we say - it was absolutely amazing, again with excellent service. Our compliments to the Head Chef, Paul, and his team.
We would be happy to come back again and again and will be telling all our friends. Thank you so much for a wonderful weekend.

Have just returned from a weekend stay at the Stanton Manor Hotel. I booked this as part of a birthday surprise for my husband, together with tickets for the Van Morrison concert at Bowood House. I had no idea what the hotel was like, but reviews on Trip Advisor seemed positive. We had a most enjoyable stay. The welcome on arrival was warm, our room, whilst not luxurious, was perfectly adequate and spotlessly clean, especially the bathroom. If booking again directly with the hotel, I would probably choose a more luxurious room but there was nothing wrong with the room we were given (standard, booked not directly with the hotel). The best part of the weekend for us was the food, which was outstanding. We had dinner on the Friday evening - the mushroom risotto, beef main course and lemon creme dessert were absolutely fantastic. The beef was beautifully cooked (I like it well done which seems to cause some chefs difficulty). Full cooked breakfast on the Saturday morning was again perfectly cooked - scrambled egg cooked to perfection (and hot), not "wet" and no grease to be seen on the plate. Service throughout our stay was professional and staff were kind and helpful. We did not eat at the hotel on Saturday evening (having eaten there on Friday we were sorry to miss the opportunity of having another lovely meal), but had to be at Bowood by about 7 p.m for the concert. We were very impressed with this hotel, lovely gardens, really relaxing. If you are reading this at Stanton Manor, thank you for a lovely weekend and special thanks to your chef for the fantastic food. We will certainly be staying here again and would consider it an excellent venue, close to Bowood. Look forward to staying here again in the near future.
