“High Tea at McNabs Restaurant”
Reviewed 6 September 2012

I can't comment on the hotel but would like to share my experience of McNabs Restaurant. My husband and I went there for High Tea and it was superb with service to match. McNabs has been recently renovated to a good standard with a mix of old and new features and cosy soft furnishings. We had the fish and chips, which was really nice. Fish cooked to perfection and big fat "real" potato chips served with peas were really tasty. All served with lots of tea or coffee, bread and butter and cake stand full of tasty scones with jam and cream along with various cakes and tarts. The lady told us that what we weren't able to eat, she would put into a bag for us to take home which was a really nice gesture. As far as I am aware, this hotel is under new management and has undergone a refurb so many of the negative comments from previous visitors may have been solved, we certainly had no complaint.

My partner and I love this hotel and stay at least 4 times a year. "Yes" its old and in need of refurbishment but we are hoping they do not change it too much. Its rustic feel is what brings us back again and again. We have always found our room to be very clean and the food really good. Special thanks to the manager "David" who is always cheery, friendly and very helpful. We usually ask for a late checkout and have never been refused.
We find both the hotel and staff that good that we invited 12 of our friends and family to spend a weekend there and they were not disappointed.
If you are looking for a 4 star hotel then maybe this isn't for you but personally we prefer somewhere you are made welcome with nice food, friendly helpful staff and a clean room all of which you will get here. Can't wait to book again October/November time.

We stayed here recently as part of a coach tour, the place was filthy.
Our room had damp on the ceiling and by the end of the week rain was coming in,one couple on our trip asked to be moved.
The floor had not been cleaned for weeks, and the dust was weeks old,the excuse about we are going through a refurb does not stand up as this dirt was weeks if not months old.
When the cleaner came round all she did was empty the bins.
The place is just plain dirty and i would never stay there again.

Thank you for posting your comments on Trip Advisor
The need for investment can be no excuse for the poor cleanliness issues that you mention and for this I would like to sincerely apologise.
The hotel is in the process of receiving investment which will see all carpets and soft furnishing replaced as well as new beds, furniture, baths, Televisions and a complete refurbishment of the bar area. Hope fully you will return to see the property restored to it's full potential.

Please be assured that these issues have been discussed with my managers and teams responsible.

Grand old hotel in the center of Callander is now having a bit of a refurb. The carpets were missing from the 2nd floor but as the skip outside testified this was part of the refurb, and indeed, the carpet fitter turned up first thing monday morning.
My room was more than adequate, with lcd tv, comfy bed and an armchair! I really miss an armchair when there isnt one in the room, dont like having to sit on the edge of the bed when watching tv/reading. The ensuite was a good size and the shower cubicle had plenty of room.
The room was clean and was serviced daily. The only problem i had was keeping the sash window open, i had to wedge it but i can forgive them that.
The food was really good, the chef is pretty good, although the service was a little slow at times, and the Spanish waiting staff didn't seem to quite understand everything you said, otherwise they did their best and were cheerfull enough.
The view from my window was quite nice, overlooking the river with mountains to one side and the old motte and bailey to the other.
In places there are a few things that look a bit tired but the hotel is well over 100 years old and the owners are slowly refurbing it, so all in all i would recomend it as somewhere to stay in this area.

We had a great time here the staff very friendly and helpful they are doing the hotel up and it's taking shape food is good new beds this time very comfy. The only down side is the entertainment is now being held in the dinning room great big room with no atmosphere it was a shame for the singer hardly anyone came through from the bar to listen to him. I hope the management read the reviews get him back in the bar

Booked last minute for weekend in Callander.Arrived at hotel & had to negotiate my way through a stack of old beds, matresses, baths & wash basins just to get in to carpark at rear of property. Thought this possibly sign of recent refurbishment but sadly this was not to be.What had obviously been a top class establishment once upon a time is now a sad, drab shell. We found our room to be in need of a good clean prior to some fresh paint & new furniture. The shower cabinet was mouldy & rusty, walls and furniture scuffed.the whole place just looked tired & worn.Went to bar for a drink & to check out the dinner menu, the bar had run out of beer & staff didn`t seem too bothered, more interested in conversation with friends & their children who seemed to treat the place like a creche.Did not sleep well due to some piece of machinery or possibly a boiler, which cut on and off at 12 sec intervals all night. Don`t think we will be back any time soon.

Stayed here in April 2012 for just a couple of nights as were in the area for a wedding. The location is great, right in the middle of the town and plenty of parking etc nearby if you can't get into the hotels tiny private car park. This was obviously once a pretty impressive hotel, but now it really just looks a bit sad. Our room smelt so badly of smoke that we had to open the window at all times, it was like the smoking ban had only just finished. The room was a good size but the tv didn't work, the bathroom was just out of date but not unclean, because everything was a bit old and worn it just felt unloved.
However, we found the staff really lovely and helpful so hope that the hotel gets a bit of TLC to bring it back to what I feel it once was.

Thank you for taking the time to put your comments onto Trip Advisor and your positive comments regarding our staff.

The Dreadnought Hotel is a completely non-smoking hotel and I have spoken to our housekeeping team and re-trained them on informing us if they find a room which previous guests have been smoking in.

The hotel is currently in the process of being refurbished, at present, we have a new dining area and bar which has had some nice comments made about it recently. We are also now working on the bedrooms, having them redecorated with new beds, carpets and soft furnshings.
The refurbishments are almost now completed and hope on your next visit to Callander you will come in and see how much progress we have made with our renovation programme.
