“3 Great meals”
Reviewed 30 May 2014

We stayed in Brockenhurst over May half term, we ate there 3 different nights Sunday, bank holiday Monday and our last night Thursday and each night the meals were lovely and friendly staff.
The specials board was great lots of things you would not normally have and a daily menu with little changes to it.
The Sunday carvery was very nice but get there early as by 6-6:30 they had sold out, it was a nice sunny day so more people were out and about .
When we visit the Forrest again I will happily go back, thank you again.

“Good for a quick meal”

Frustrating "order at the food counter at the bar" setup. Food was good, but should have gone to the Foresters

“Proceed with Caution at Christmas....”
Reviewed 22 May 2014

Proceed with caution.................

We went here for Christmas dinner 2013 as part of a family group of 18. We live in the village so know the pub well and, despite reading a bad review from a large party from the previous Christmas, we were optimistic that everything would go well for us. How wrong we were!

If you are wondering why we are only posting this review now, it’s because it has taken this long to get a satisfactory result from our list of complaints.

From the moment we walked in the door it was a catalogue of disaster! That said, we feel it only fair to comment on the good points first of all. Most of the starters were enjoyed by us all, and the majority of us had the Roast turkey which was actually very good. Desserts were all well received and we had a lovely selection of cheeses to finish.

But now for the bad!
1) The table had not been set out as we’d been told which meant some hasty changes to our seating plan including re-arranging some settings and chairs by us.
2) We had been told there was no need to pre-order the wine but they only had 3 bottles of the red we chose – which was one of the featured wines on their Christmas Menu.
3) No water jugs on the tables. We had to ask several times for these and even then had to chase for glasses.
4) One of the starters was to include Proscuitto ham – they served wafer thin cooked ham.
5) One of our party had ordered beef cheeks – she had one small beef cheek and 3 large sausages!
6) We were rushed to sit down before we were really ready as some of our party had only just arrived. Starters were served, 2 or 3 plates cleared and then we waited a whole hour before our mains were served!
7) Although we had given several weeks advance notice of our food orders, including one of our party who had ordered “off menu”, a lamb dish which was on the Boxing Day menu, she had to wait even longer than the rest of us causing our meals to go cold whilst we waited for her. (This was the only thing that was ever apologised for and she was offered a free drink to compensate)
8) Two of our party do not like nuts, one of them has a slight allergy. They had ordered nut free versions of stuffing and sprouts but these were not served. When asked about them they brought out side dishes with the nut free versions but didn’t replace the meals.
9) Tea and coffee was put on the tables in pots with no cups and saucers which we had to ask for. By the time they came the tea and coffee had gone cold.

There were other minor issues but not worth commenting on here. Having said all of the above, we did have a good time. It was Christmas Day and we were all together as a family and so didn’t want to make a fuss on the day.

And now for the worst bit! We wrote a letter to Marstons Inns at the end of December, complaining about all of the above, and sent a copy to the Rose and Crown. We received an acknowledgment but by the end of January we had still not received a reply. After chasing we were eventually made a small offer of compensation but no explanation as to why any of the mistakes had occurred. The letter also seemed to be making a point that everyone one else had had a good time as they had received no other complaints. We wrote again asking for explanations and for them to reconsider their offer. A further reply came back, no increase in the offer, and basically calling us liars! They said, and I quote, “there were no sausages on that plate” and, “although there was a small delay between starters and mains, it was not the hour you claim” Fortunately we had photographic evidence to prove otherwise and after pointing this out the offer was finally doubled and a cheque was received in the middle of March!

What is really disappointing is that we feel we can no longer use this pub, which is a shame as we liked to walk down there on a summers evening. Had the matter been resolved swiftly, with a decent apology, reasonable explanations and compensation we may have felt differently. We accept that mistakes happen but not owning up to them is unacceptable, and calling your clients liars is never a good thing!

So our advice is this. If you are a small group you will probably have a good time and a reasonable meal. But if you are a large party, think again!

“Don't leave it too late to order food”
Reviewed 6 May 2014

We turned up on spec mid-evening, after visiting friends at their campsite. Staff found us a table ok despite the establishment being busy. Purely by chance we got our hot food order in just before an 8.30 cut-off. Those behind us in the queue did too I believe as the chap taking the orders knew he was risking the wrath of the kitchen staff, so a special thank you to him.

We were surprised how quickly our food arrived, given the circumstances. Hot, tasty and well-presented.

“Don't expect anything more than 'fine'”
Reviewed 3 May 2014

We chose the Rose & Crown as it was local to our B&B and our first choice restaurant was fully booked on the Saturday over Easter weekend.

The menu was fairly extensive with a good choice of dishes and some nice specials on the board too. It's pretty much standard chain pub style food, nothing to write home about but pleasant enough to do the job. We seemed to be missing quite a few of the condiments on our shard starter and the staff were so busy we couldn't grab someone to ask which was a shame.

The gardens did look lovely though so I could imagine it would be nice for an afternoon snack and drink. I think my review may be influence by a similarly priced, but miles nicer, meal at another local restaurant the night before.
