“Enjoyable stay ”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 December 2013 via mobile

My husband and I decided we wanted a short break away to help relax between Xmas and new year period ! We had paid for a superior double so expected a really nice room ! Whilst the room was lovely we thought it was missing a few basic essentials for a 4* hotel ! The lack of an iron and fridge were two examples ! Also wen we booked they stated the room was one of their best but a room over looking a roof was unexpected. Although there was a few minor things we had a very positive stay ! The staff were very friendly and helpful, the food at the restaurant and bar was lovely and good value and the swimming pool and spa facilities were excellent ! Also we had a 6 month old daughter and the staff were very accommodating throughout. All in all an offer we received wen booking made this great value for money however I would of expected more if we had paid the full rate !

Thank you for taking the time to write a complimentary review about your stay at the Balmer Lawn Hotel. I am delighted to hear that you and your family had a lovely relaxed time and enjoyed the food as well as the pool and spa facilities. Unfortunately our rooms are not automatically set up with iron and ironing boards, but we are able to supply those on request. Many thanks again for the lovely comments about our staff and the excellent service and we look forward to welcoming you back in the near future.

I booked the Balmer Lawn Hotel to propose to my girlfriend on 27th December 2013. Words cannot express how perfect the night went!

The service was amazing, the room (Room 30) was something out of a fairy tail. I asked for a bottle of champagne to be hidden in the room for when she said yes (and thank god she did) The staff were great! they hid the bottle in the wardrobe and put it on ice for me. They couldn't have gone out there way anymore tho make sure our night went perfect.

We dined in the hotel that evening and the fillet steak was simply out of this word. I have eaten steak in many countries throughout the world and this was with no doubt the best steak I have ever had!!!

After such an amazing time here, we have decided that we will defiantly be having our wedding in this outstanding place!

Thank you so much Balmer Lawn for everything! We looking forward to our wedding which based on this night will also be a day we will never forget.

Room Tip: Room 30, with its huge four poster bed and amazing view is the only choice for me.

We have just returned from a 3 night stay over Christmas at Balmer Lawn where we had a fantastic time. The entire Christmas package, from carols around the tree on Christmas Eve, to the lovely food, a seamlessly organised trip to the pantomime in Southampton and all the little touches that go to making a memorable stay were all there. Staff could not do enough to ensure that our stay was relaxing. My parents even commented that they have travelled all over the world and the service that they received at Balmer Lawn was second to none. Thanks for a fantastic Christmas, memorable for all of the right reasons.

Room Tip: Definitely use the look before you buy facility so that you can actually see your room before bookin...

Booked for out 10th wedding anniversary or 2 nights. The "superior room " was overlooking a grey flat roof with no view an the bathroom was pre 1980's with mould all around the bath and grout! Not what we were expecting, we requested another room and was told that there would be a £30 extra charge per night. After getting our bags with NO help or been asked if we needed help! The 4 poster room was that actual room we had we got married....after better inspection the bed was broken and again the bathroom was awful! I own my self holiday flats in Bournemouth and would be ashamed to have apartments in that state. You don't expect ikea cheap furniture . After such disappointment we decided not to stay and checked out. The asst manager, Jaime was called and was appalled at the lack of customer services we were shown. I worked in a 5 star hotel for 10 year as head receptionist and would of expected a lot better customer service from management. Such a great shame for us. I left in tears.

I was disappointed to read your review about your recent experience at our hotel. The superior room you booked was a large modern room, decorated in a contemporary style, with a bathroom re-furbished around 6 years ago, so definitely not the 1980’s style which was referred to. The current owners have over the past 16 years invested heavily to upgrade and improve the bedroom stock.

We also believe in total transparency and all our bedrooms are available to be viewed on our website so that guests can choose the room that best suit their individual requirements. Our “Choose Your Room” section of our website shows pictures of the room, the bathroom and the view from the room for all our bedrooms from budget through to luxury. The grouting in room 4’s bathroom was certainly not mouldy but a little discoloured, but I agree that this will have to get attention soon. Equally the bed in room 9 was not broken but some of the glue was visible when the bed had been repaired in the past.

Having been shown 3 alternative bedrooms you decided to stay in room 9 (a luxury 4 poster room, charged at £90.00 per night more - therefore a £30 supplement in total was sought). Within a few minutes you changed your mind and decided not to stay at all.

Whilst I appreciate that all 4 bedrooms shown to you did not match your expectations I do not feel that your description of the service you experienced mirrors the actual situation that evening. The receptionist on duty did offer you if you wanted help with your luggage (this being our normal standard) and your partner turned down our offer. I also believe that one of my duty managers helped you moving your luggage from one room to the next. Having shown you 4 bedrooms in an attempt to meet your expectations I cannot understand how you can criticise our standards of service. Although we are under no obligation to return the £80.00 deposit paid, our Duty Manager did agree to refund the deposit immediately, before you left the hotel.

Overall I would not agree that the customer service experience was as you have described, we did everything to try to satisfy your requirements and were polite and helpful throughout this entire process. All our staff tried their utmost to help you to turn your stay into a great break, but without the willingness from your side, our opportunities to please were very limited.

My wife, mother in law and two children (aged 5 and 4) stayed at the Balmer Lawn for two nights over Christmas eve and Christmas day. We were a little reluctant not having stayed away before over the Christmas break, however, we had no need to worry. The hotel itself along with the staff had a fantastic festive feel and an amazing atmosphere. We enjoyed carols with a local choir on Christmas eve and a visit from santa Christmas day much to the children's delight. Christmas lunch comprised 6 courses and there was plenty of champagne on tap at the reception. The hotel has great facilities including a pool, spa and sporting facilities. The food and drink were excellent and the bar/lounge was cosy. The rooms are well maintained with a big comfortable bed and all of the usual comforts. The location is particularly nice being in the heart of the forest. We discovered there are many guests who return year after year during the festive break and I can see why. Well worth a visit.

Room Tip: We had a superior family room which had a small adjoining room with bunk beds for the children.

We have just returned home from 3 days at the Balmer Lawn from 24th to 27th December 2013. We were so impressed we have already booked to go back for 2014! The staff were so friendly, professional and nothing was ever too much trouble. The food was excellent and we definitely did not go hungry during our 3 day stay. The hotel was spotlessly clean. Rooms superb. My only regret - we could not have stayed a day or two longer (family commitments). The children, husband and I are already looking to returning very soon. Thank you for a fantastic Christmas.

Room Tip: Pay for an upgrade with a Forest View, it is worth every penny.

Lovely country hotel in an amazing setting in the forest. Have been here a few times and never disappointed , staff so friendly and helpful, afternoon tea fantastic , rooms with views of the forest, breakfast really good, food in bar area really good, cosy lounge area with log fire, piano music and newspapers. Can't wait to go back soon. Well done Balmer you have it so right.

Room Tip: Can choose older traditional rooms or new renovated rooms.
