We stayed in the Stables room/outbuilding it was absolutely lovely. Full of character but with homely comforts. The food in the restaurant was amazing, never had pork crackling like it. The potting shed for treatments had a stunning view over the lake. I highly recommend the reflexology.

The Pig was recommended by a friend. We took teenagers and friends of ours for a mid week summer lunch. We enjoyed a walk thought the rather gentile farmyard and a delightful beer in the sheltered courtyard complete with outdoor fire place before settling down on the terrace for a sunny leisurely lunch. Of the Piggy Bites, the Quails Egg Pulled Pork balls were exquisite as were the Risotto balls. My main was Chap - wonderful (and an experience as you can see the teeth). I ended with some of the best selection of Cheese and Biscuits I have ever eaten and the entire menu was sourced within a 25 mile radius. This was an expensive meal but well worth it for both the quality of the food and the environment. Well done all

Three of us went for lunch during the week - always busy no matter when you visit. The surroundings both within and outside are just lovely and the food was as memorable as ever. Only slight negative was the staff - who usually are the epitome of friendly, chatty yet professional attitudes - all seemed on edge and not very smiley? But still scores 5 out of 5!

Treated ourselves to dinner and an overnight stay at the Pig for our anniversary. Arrived to a very warm and helpful welcome. All the staff were friendly and eager to help. Had a delicious, non alcoholic, cocktail in the Courtyard. You could also order food here throughout the day. We had a room in the main house- spacious and comfortable with tea and coffee facilities, well stocked but expensive mini bar. Very comfortable king sized bed and good sized shower room with the best shower! We had a walk round the grounds which included a well stocked kitchen garden, free range hens, and a large pond.
Dinner at 7, delicious cocktail beforehand-Smack the Pony. The menu is all sourced from an area of 25 miles and there was plenty to choose from. The menu changes daily according to what the forager, gardener has found. Superb meal and all the waiting staff are attentive and knowledgeable about the menu.
My only complaint was we did not have enough room for the wonderful choice of breakfast!
I would highly recommend the Pig for a real treat, but the drinks bill mounts up quickly!

Room Tip: Our room, number 3 was over the main entrance but most people had left the restaurant by 11

As a base for a yacht trip, Isle of Wight and Portsmouth we decided to stay at a hotel, long on our list of destinations. Our arrival was interrupted by two pairs of deer, however, a wonderful bar, great service, comfortable beds, awesome peer shower, wifi everywhere... and, we were very happy. The food, a somewhat cliched "walled garden kitchen", was great, breakfast and dinner, the wine list was ridiculously extensive, given it's price range, however, interesting notes made for a wise choice served by great staff, in our case, Jack, who kindly gave us champagne on hearing of my partner's birthday. Only two criticisms, the coffee wasn't great and our room, entitled "snug" was incredibly hot at all times. Apart from that, we loved it and look forward to a return and trying out the other three "hotels" in the chain!

Room Tip: Stay in the main house to get the full effect!

My boyfriend and I stayed at The Pig last weekend. We arrived on the Friday afternoon, and were shown to our room. Surprisingly it was freezing cold, we soon discovered this was because the air con had to be on, as an attempt to mask the noisy kitchen fan that rumbled below.
After requesting to move room, we were told due to the hotel being full this wasn't possible, so we were compensated with a bottle of cheap sparkling wine. Its a bit like when the service is rubbish in a restaurant and you are compensated with a free desert and coffee, OK but not really a solution!
We were told to keep the air con on as this would mask the noise and smell. Despite following this tip, whenever we returned to the room there was a horrid stink of fat in the air!
The team at the front desk weren't surprised when we complained about the room, we obviously weren't the first. So why have a room there?!
Such a shame to have to be in an air con room, rather than open the windows wide and let in the fresh country air! Returning to London with an extremely stuffy nose. Also there is a radio in the kitchen, not ideal when trying to relax during the day with a constant hum under your pillow.
This was turning out not to be the idyllic retreat we had hoped for. I found the hotel through the Mr and Mrs Smith site, if you are looking to relax as a couple, this is not the hotel for you. The place was swarming with babies and toddlers. Breakfast and the kitchen gardens, peace being disrupted by screaming youngsters, unable to keep the noise to a minimum, toddlers running around everywhere whilst we tried to enjoy breakfast outside on the Sunday morning.
Be aware the grounds are not very big, so everywhere you turn there is another couple trying to relax. Its great the hotel is popular, but there is no space to escape!

We had a lovely walk to Lyndhurst through the forest. Take your own map, do NOT use the on provided by the hotel. Totally useless, the numbers of the cycle posts would be useful!

I found it strange that they provide shampoo, conditioner and shower gel, but no body lotion.
Breakfast is a complete rip off, £8 for a selection of things but not the buffet. The black pudding was forgotten on my boyfriends plate on the Sunday, and had to be requested, surely these things should be spotted by the waiting staff.
So many tables in the dining room, feel like you are on top of each other at breakfast, squeezing past tables to get to the "Big Table". It all felt a bit like they were squeezing as much out of people as possible, pushing the boundaries as to what people would pay for.
Dinner was delicious, the crackling piggy bits is excellent! However, they did not have the wine that we requested, this was substituted for another, and the Courgette flowers that I ordered were not available. This would have been useful to know before we looked at the menu.
The spa is fantastic! The Potting Shed is a real retreat, lovely therapist and great treatment.
Overall I left feeling very disappointed, after hearing such good things, our weekend was a celebration for my boyfriend's 30th, unfortunately it wasn't the treat we were expecting! On receipt of the bill we discussed that the stay had not been great due to the room, noise and smell. We got a 25% discount, after the lady on the desk agreed that this room was not to the same standard as other rooms that were the same price but did not have the noisy, smelly kitchen below.
Finally, the second bath towel in a room for 2 as you would expect is hiding away rolled up in the cupboard under the sink, not hanging up!?

Better places to stay, all seems a bit too much hype and style over substance. If you want to get away from it all, don't go here!

Room Tip: If you are given Room 10, turn and walk away!

In every way bar one, I thoroughly enjoyed three nights at the Pig last month. Food great, service charming yet unobtrusive. But the ubiquitous, awful, American-soully kind of music. Simply dreadful. And when I asked for it to be turned off in the sitting room - where my wife and I were alone reading - Reception seemed less than keen to please me. Instead, they suggested that other people might object. Obviously, I was less important than people who had not mentioned the music. Do your guests all sign something to say "we want background music, whatever it is"? If so, why wasn't I asked?

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Pig is a bang up to date take on a new style of home grown, 26 bedroom country house hotel and what that needs to be today - original, relaxed and sitting comfortably within its environment. It's really a restaurant with rooms. This is a place that is all about the walled garden and everything is driven by the gardener/forager and chef - they grow and find the food - the chef then makes the menu. The style is home grown in every way - breaking the mold of designed hotels, daring to be comfortable in its own skin, working with what it has and recognising what is good about that. It won't be perfect, it will be warm, relaxed, comfy, interesting, and homely with muted colours, a bit shabby chic and evolved rather than interior designed. ... more   less
