We popped in just to look at The Pig as staying nearby and had read some good stuff about it. Girl at Reception was charming and even though we were not eating there, told us all the places we could wander round and look at , such as the garden, the pigs, the greenhouse etc. Which we did and enjoyed. She then managed to squeeze us into a late reservation that evening.
Meanwhile we read the Reviews here and were not sure if we would be disappointed or not. We arrived in yet more pouring rain and the door was opened welcomingly as we arrived and wet umbrella instantly dealt with. Not one but two charming young men checked our booking and showed us to the outside with a lovely burning log fire and big umbrella for us to look at menus and have a pre dinner drink. Having explained we liked the taste of juniper in our gins, I was amused to see on bill later that we had received Navy Strength gin as a result.. and very nice it was too, though not sure what that says about my drinking preferences!! We did have a bit of a wait for our table but hey, there was a wedding reception so we understood . If I was having a wedding reception, I would expect to take priority quite frankly. Anyway, only about 9 minutes late, we went to our table in a pretty pretty restaurant. My daughter is lactose intolerant and the waiter could not have been more knowledgeable or helpful ( and did not have the semi impatient misunderstanding look you can sometimes get by people who do not understand the reaction on the body if you do accidently eat lactose). The bread was warm fresh and fantastic , as was the dipping oil. Our food was well cooked/prepared and clearly freshly sourced. The bill was quite high but then we did have pre dinner drinks , a bottle of wine between two, and also one very very strong after dinner drink so did not really expect it not to be low. As the restaurant was winding down we were so tactfully asked if we would prefer the after dinner drinks in the lounge which we did, but felt no pressure to do so. Overall, we had a delightful evening. Every member of staff was polite but not obsequieous, smiling and the right side of fun. Special mention to the Samwise Gamgee double from Gravesend, who made us laugh . Good luck in your career... you should go far, you were brilliant. Just some final things.. it would have been nice to have the chance to buy some product such as the Rapeseed Oil and the Smoked Rock Salt. It is interesting to see the Restaurant never seems to comment on reviews which does seem a little surprising as we found our nearby hotel on the basis of Trip Advisor and the reviews and replies. But a great evening , so many thanks to all the staff on duty on Wednesday 28

Room Tip: cannot comment... we just came to eat in restaurant

From the complimentary Champagne (it was my wife's birthday), to the superb 'piggy bites', starters and beautiful mains to the scrumptious dessert the evening could not have gone any better. Excellent attentive service (my wife's gluten intolerance can often be an issue, but not here) with food to match, there is simply nowhere better to eat. This was our second visit this year and we are counting down the days until our next sitting in September.

I must say I was a little nervous having read some recent reviews especially as this was a special occasion and the place had come highly recommended. Suffice to say the worries disappeared once we were greeted and shown through to the bar. From start to finish everything was absolutely superb. The environment is informal yet classy and all staff were subtly attentive. After cocktails and some 'piggy bites' in the bar we were taken to our table. We skipped starters and had the 'bath chap' and neck of lamb. Quite superb with a side of chips (1 portion easily does for 2) and greens. Sweet was an exquisite lemon flan and strawberry and mint terrine. Again superb. The service throughout the meal was friendly and informative. Coffee in the beautiful bar surroundings finished off a wonderful evening. I have no complaints at all and will return without doubt.
As far a prices are concerned then we thought it was worth it. The drink selection is very varied. We opted for cocktails at a tenner each and worth it by taste and volume. Starters and sweets around the 7 mark, mains between 15 & 25. Everything was top value for the price and portions were well sized.

My husband and I booked the Green Room for our Ruby Wedding Celebration on Bank Holiday Sunday. Our party ranged from 7 months to 65 years - a real family affair. The Green Room was perfect as we didn't have to worry about disturbing other diners.
As with our previous visits, the food was excellent, the service friendly and efficient, all staff made us feel very welcome. We were given a nominated person to "look after us" and Charlotte most certainly did. When our 4 year old Grand-daughter announced that she wanted to be a "Chef making puddings" to our surprise the Pastry Chef was brought in to meet her. Indicative of their friendly, non stuffy style.
The grounds of the Main House are extensive, you can visit the vegetable gardens / the herb gardens / the livestock and sit in the Courtyard whilst the Chef cooks on the outside wood-fired oven. Log fires inside the building. Comfortable lounges / library etc. Wellies are even provided for "walk-abouts", rope swing and large skittles etc.
Our party described is like eating in a comfortable country house, amongst friends and great food.
Recommend without hesitation. The Pig Hotel should certainly be higher on the Trip Adviser list!!

Room Tip: We didn't stay in the Hotel as we live in Christchurch but we would love to

We had a torrid journey to the hotel and we were held up in traffic, but we were greeted with smiles and shown to our table, its very busy, but they had remembered I am gluten free, and made available the bread for me and remembered right through the service, the waiter was nice, delicious starter and pork dinner was served, the vegetables were lovely picked this morning, and tasted divine, I asked for more gravy as I love the stuff, and it was brought back immediately - so to summarise upbeat staff, excellent food, and we will be returning, and I notice below there is a mention of a snooty waitress, I think they were in a different hotel as I never saw a snooty member of staff. so pleased to have found this place..
