“Beautiful, lots of wild ponies to fall in love with.”
Reviewed 16 June 2011

We was worried about the staff being horrible after the bad reviews but we only met 1 grumpy unhelpful staff member the rest was really nice. The site is very big so finding pitch wasnt a problem, we just had to dodge the ponies as they were everywhere enjoying the good life. We did encounter the donkey and her baby, who came and helped themself to anything they could get to eat, this made our stay funny and gave us great memorys to treasure. But please remember these are wild animals and they should not be fed as in winter no one will be around so they have to learn to take care of themselves.
The showers are very clean and hot water is always available, 20p for hairdryer and there is no shop on site.
If you love wildlife, beautiful scenery and peace and quiet this is the place. No music is allowed on site, this is a good thing.
I would definatly recommend Roundhill.

Stayed on this site over the late May Bank Holiday, our second visit. Despite being fully booked out there was loads of room and units were not wedged in anywhere near as much as on other FC (Forestry Commission) sites nearby. This was partly due to the ground being quite uneven in many places, so tents had to pick their spot carefully. I can only assume the max 500 pitches is governed by the toilet facilities rather than space - but even on a "full" weekend there was never too much queueing required for ablutions at the three clean and tidy toilet blocks.

The site is very nicely situated a short drive from Brockenhurst village, with some shelter provided by perimeter trees and the odd bush/scrub area across the site. This was very useful as it was extremely windy when we stayed, and pitching next to a large bush helped enormously.

A few words of warning though - as the site is on an old airfield there is in places some very stony ground - some areas still have concrete foundations of old buildings a few inches below the surface. We did get pitched OK with many bent pegs and some swearing, but in future would check the map of the site behind reception that clearly shows where the old building were - those spaces being perhaps less suitable for tents unless you've got some seriously heavy duty pegs!

Also, please heed the warnings about the wild ponies - they are very nosy and *very* pushy and confident around humans. It was entirely our own fault - we'd camped here before and just forgot - but we left tour tent open with some food in shopping bags inside. The sight or sound of a rustling shopping bag will bring ponies from far and wide. We ended up with one actually inside the tent, and she got quite irate when we tried to shoo her away and would not budge until she'd sampled all the fruit we had. Needless to say, all our food stayed in our car boot for the rest of the weekend and we had no further trouble!

The site is well situated and I would recommend it to families - whilst there is no playground as such there is plenty of space set aside for games, and a short walk onto the adjacent heathland provides space for kite flying etc. The rules about keeping quiet after 11pm were enforced, which is a blessing for those of use with small children. More than once it was clear that a roving site manager had asked groups to keep the noise down after hours, and this was respected, which was refreshing.

Despite the increasing costs of FC sites in the New Forest, they are still good places t stay and well maintained, so we'll keep using them.

If you fancy getting asked to re pitch your tent halfway through your stay for no other reason than "being pitched on the grass" then go for it. Warden totally unreasonable, rude and seems to detest londoners! Toilets abysmal, long queues, dirty etc. Worst I have camped at in the uk.

As the title suggests not the most pleasant camping experience after being pitched up for a day and a half, we were asked to move our tent by an over zealous and dictatorial 'site warden' the reason - for being pitched on the grass. Embarrassingly so he even suggested another spot of grass we were allowed to be pitched on, despite trying to reason we were forced to take down our tent and move a whole ten feet to a pitch identical to where we were. Rude, needless and tainted our trip. Add to this horrific toilets, long long queues for showers and music through the night (where was the warden now indeed) all round an awful experience. The site is overcrowded, mainly because the two huge recreational areas are not in use with games of cricket, rounders, footy and even rugby being played in amongst all the pitches. Again where was the warden!!! Experienced new forest camper so not a camping rant, first time of staying here and my advice is simply DON'T. Holland Wood up the road is far nicer and a much more pleasant experience all round. If Like us you find Holland Wood fully booked do not be tempted to settle for this poor poor poor secondary option. Stay at home unless you fancy re-pitching your tent every night.

Had a 2 night stay over May Bank Holiday. Excellent customer service at reception when booking in. Was rather worried regarding reception due to previous reviews on here, but can honestly say the staff were so helpful and explained everything in detail in a friendly manner.

There are 3 toilet/shower blocks that are cleaned daily at 12pm. Never had to wait to use the toilet, although there was a queue to use the shower in the morning. If you can, try and have one late at night or very early in the morning!

Plenty of bins for general waste/recycling and to bin your BBQ's. Also, loads of space to pick a pitch, was told upon arrival just to find an area, "anywhere that took our fancy" was very roomy at Roundhill. Cant wait to book up again.

Was nice to see horses, cows and donkeys roaming around. They did not bother with us as long as you dont feed them.

Overall, was such a great place to stay. Facilities were just want you wanted. Will definately go back to this site.

Before our trip we read many of the reviews here and were a little apprehensive about the staff on the site but booked anyway as the place looked so nice and right in the middle of the forest. After four and a half hours driving we arrived just over an hour early for check in but were told if we wanted to get on the site we would have to pay a supplement, now we fully understand during peak times of the year the need to have a turn around time on a camp site but on this large site of 500 pitches we could see about 12 caravans and about the same number of tents so thought this a little unreasonable of them so on principal we popped into Brockenhurst for an hour. On our return the staff were very polite & helpful and although a little put off we soon found a lovely spot and settled in. The showers and toilets were very clean and hot water was plentiful. You can pick your own pitch as long as its 6m away from your nearest neighbour, as it was so quiet on the site we had plenty of privacy. it really was a wonderful site to stay on with lots of wild ponies, donkeys and cows wondering around the site during the day, when we went there were lots of young foals as well which was lovely to see up close. If you are looking for a quiet site away from noise and traffic then this is great mid-week but we found that Friday evening attracted the weekend younger campers. we will definitely be returning later in the year. Nearby Brockenhurst is a lovely village and we recommend a visit to the Snakecatcher pub, the food is outstanding and if you like steak and good beer then this is the place to go. the village also has a really nice riding stable where you can take a horse ride through the new forest.

We arrived to find a massive open campsite, we were told to choose our spot and managed to find a pitch with no one else near us. Well apart a few horses. The kids thought this was great.

The ground is quite uneven and did prove a problem as we picked a night with the longest thunder storm we ever experienced so ended up with massive puddles.

We are looking forward to returning with better weather.
