We had a weekend break at Rhinefield House, we'd just got married and this hotel certainly provided a beautiful setting in which to have a short, relaxing break.
We stayed in Sparrowhawk, a really lovely room, modern, tasteful with views out into the forest.
The staff were helpful and courteous and little details like remembering our name made it a special break.
Sadly the hotel was badly let down by the food which was pretty poor. For breakfast we had Eggs Benedict which was watery on a quarter slice of processed ham served on top of a toasted muffin. The following morning we chose the full English breakfast which was much better.
Dinner was equally disappointing, we started with Vietnamese Spring Roll (£10.50). It was served on a wooden slab, decorated with a few salad leaves and a swirl of balsamic vinegar. The Spring Roll itself was just one, icy cold, tiny pancake roll half filled with crunchy vegetables. Very pretty but I can't imagine it cost more than 50p to prepare.
We tried the risotto, which was a odd consistency, more like porridge than risotto.
Service was excellent and the staff were delightful though.

Dear Karen
Congratulations on your recent marriage and thank you for staying with us here at Rhinefield. I was really pleased that you had enjoyed the hotel and the high level of service from the team. I will certainly have a look into the disappointments you encountered with our food offerings and discuss them with our Head Chef James.

My husband booked an overnight stay at Rhinefield House as a surprise for our wedding anniversary on 16 March. The whole experience was amazing. The first view of the house from the driveway is breathtaking and we were also blessed with one of the first sunny days of the year. Check-in was smooth and relaxed and our room was clean and comfortable. We spent an hour exploring the stunning grounds in the sunshine. We had booked dinner in the Armada restaurant and made our menu choices over a cheeky g&t in the lounge before being calmly 'scooped up' and escorted to the restaurant when our table was ready. We received an extra entrée with compliments of the chef which was delicious, in addition to our menu choices. The food was exquisite, and the service first class. We chose to have our coffee in the lounge and were surprised again with hand made chocolate truffles with 'Happy Anniversary' piped on the plate - so thoughtful. After an excellent sleep in a large comfortable bed, breakfast was relaxed, unhurried and delicious. The interior of the hotel is beautiful from the large carved fireplace in the restaurant to the Moroccan themed room - so much to see. Check out was smooth. Overall an excellent stay, all staff were friendly, helpful and very professional. Thank you so much for making our anniversary truly memorable.

We had our wedding here at the end of last year and had a truly wonderful day. We wanted a country house hotel type venue in the New Forest area and Rhinefield fitted the bill perfectly. We've stayed at the Handpicked Hotels chain before and had really enjoyed our stays, which also helped in our decision.

From our first visit to look round, we were assigned an events planner, Katie. It was immediately obvious that Katie and the Rhinefield team were very experienced in organising weddings and it is a very popular wedding venue. An important thing for us was knowing on the day we wouldn't have to be worrying about anything, and that was completely true with Rhinefield. I got the impression that the team has pretty much had every request and seen every type of wedding, and they can deal with anything you need!

The venue itself is beautiful - the first glimpse of the house when you come up the long drive, tall trees on either side, is stunning. We also liked the fact that it really is set right in the middle of the forest. The ceremony room (the Great Hall) is also lovely, dark wood with a huge ornate fireplace, a beautiful carved ceiling and a minstrels gallery. Next door to the Great Hall is the Kings Room, where you can have your drinks reception after the ceremony and dancing/bar in the evening.

The planning process was very easy. We visited a couple of times before booking and after that, Katie was in touch throughout by email or phone to help us through the planning process - we never had to worry about what we needed to be doing next. We went to the hotel about ten weeks before our wedding to do our menu and wine tasting and also met chef James. There was a surprisingly long list of menu options for the day compared to our other shortlisted venues, we chose two of each course in advance and tasted them on the day, together with six wines. We also went through what we wanted for our day with Katie in great detail, to make sure on the day itself we didn't have to worry about anything. We also met another Katie, who is head of operations on the actual wedding day.

The wedding party stayed at the hotel the night before and from the moment we arrived, everything ran really smoothly. We handed over table decorations & name cards, guest book, card post box, etc to the Operations team and they dealt with setting all of that up on the day. On the morning, we just had to concentrate on getting ready; the team took in the flowers from the florist and set up our cake too.

The wedding breakfast itself was truly excellent and a lot of people commented to us afterwards how good the food was. We had ham hock terrine for the starter, roast beef and Yorkshire pudding with vegetables for main, followed by raspberry creme brûlée with white chocolate ice cream for dessert, followed by petit fours and coffee. We had vegetarian options for the guests who didn't eat ham or beef and the hotel was really good about dealing with a special dietary request for a guest who has an extreme allergy. The evening buffet was a good spread too, with generous portions.

Everything on the day itself went very smoothly - no complaints at all! Rhinefield hire a Master of Ceremonies at no extra cost if you have over 80 guests which also helped mean everything ran to time. It was reassuring knowing that the team at the hotel probably do a couple of hundred weddings a year and are very experienced (whilst at the same time maintaining enthusiasm for our individual wedding!).

The only two downsides which we considered before deciding to book were the policy on bedrooms and the policy on champagne. I'd emphasise this didn't detract from our day, which was fantastic, but I think it is worth bearing in mind if you are considering Rhinefield at your wedding venue. Regarding bedrooms, the hotel has around 50 but you can only reserve 25 at the wedding rate (£150 per standard double per night). Of those 25, 10 must be booked for two nights and the other 15 for one night only. If you want more than 25 rooms, they are charged at standard rate (c.£230 per night and a minimum two night stay on a Saturday). We knew 25 rooms wasn't enough and no one was going to pay £460 to come to our wedding - so it meant some good friends had to stay elsewhere. There are of course plenty of hotels in the wider area but it is obviously nice to have breakfast with your guests the following day.

The second issue, the champagne, was that Rhinefield only do a wedding "package" and it included two glasses of champagne per person at the drinks reception. We wanted to switch part of the champagne portion for other drinks, so committing to the same bar spend but giving guests more choice. We were told the hotel buys so much champagne, they need to use it. The only offered option was we could substitute X number of glasses of champagne for the equivalent number of glasses of beer/wine/soft drinks, but they'd be charged at champagne price (i.e. you could substitute a lemonade for a champagne, but you'd still effectively be paying for champagne). Obviously this made no sense so we ended up paying extra to ensure guests who didn't like or couldn't drink champagne could get a soft drink or beer from the bar. We did feel that given the amount of money you spend to have your wedding at Rhinefield, some flexibility on this would have been appreciated.

In terms of accommodation, the standard classic rooms are very pleasant, clean and modern - plenty of space, quiet, comfortable beds, nice goodies in the bathroom. There is also only a small tray charge for having breakfast in your room. I would say that the quality of the rooms doesn't quite match the grandeur of the main buildings - the rooms are absolutely lovely and nothing at all you could complain about, just that there isn't really any "special" about them that I think I would expect if I was paying standard weekend rate of c.£230 a night (but for £150 a night, they were great). The bridal suite, the Walker Suite, was really lovely. It had a huge four poster and a big roll top bath, and beautiful views over the gardens. The only shame was it is the kind of room you'd want to spend a bit of time in - our wedding finished at 1am and we were up for breakfast at 9am so sadly we didn't get time to enjoy the bath!

A nice touch by the hotel was that they gathered all the wedding guests in a separate breakfast room so we could all eat together, and they were flexible about us checking out too. We have on separate visits (prior to us booking our wedding) eaten in the Grill Room and had afternoon tea in the lounge, so I can comment on those as well. The afternoon tea was lovely and very relaxed. The food in the Grill Room was very good, but it is still quite expensive (given it is meant to be a more casual, cheaper option to the main restaurant). I've also booked the Alhambra room for afternoon tea in the past for a gathering of friends, and that worked really well if you are a slightly larger group and want a little privacy.

Lastly, one important thing is that every time I've been to Rhinefield, whether for our wedding planning or on other occasions, the staff there are fantastic without exception. Everyone we have ever met is very helpful, polite and friendly. It's something we've seen at other Handpicked Hotels and I would comment is something which does really set the chain apart.

Overall, a fantastic day all round, for us and our guests - we would recommend Rhinefield as a wedding venue to anyone!

My husband and I had a night away here last Friday. Our room was very nice, although I thought the furniture was rather dated. We had a drink in the bar, ordered our food and were shown into the restaurant by a very professional young lady. The Armada restaurant was beautiful but the experience was not. Firstly they brought the wrong wine, then we had to wait for over an hour before or starters arrived. We were presented with a pre-starter of poached salmon, it was the size of a 5pence piece...an insult really, they shouldn't have bothered. Then after our starter we had to wait another 45 minutes before our main course arrived. We weren't offered any break and no apology for the wait. My husband had been which was a reasonable portion size, but my lamb was tiny, 4 small pieces each about the size of a 10 pence piece and very little else on the plate. We finished with cheese which was also a dissappontment as there was no selection available we had to take the 4 cheeses available as that was all they had. I did complain at the time and we were offered a free drink and coffee in the bar afterwards but really it was too little too late and I wouldn't choose this restaurant again. The breakfast the following morning, was, however wonderful. Very good efficient service and wonderful eggs benedict, really tasty. My husband's was equally has delighted with his full English breakfast, so basically, the breakfasts saved the day and bumped my poor score up to average. Shame because had we had a good restaurant experience I would probably have given the hotel an excellent rating.

Dear Amy
I was very sorry to read that your overall experience had not met with your expectations and in particular your dinning experience in the Armada Restaurant. We will of course investigate the issues you encountered that evening. Please do let me know if you are thinking of returning as I would like to over see any future stay personally.

I took my husband here for his 40th birthday present.
The hotel is amazing with beautiful gardens. It was very quiet and relaxing.
The service was good, the meal in the Armada restaurant was perfect fine dining !
The drinks were very expensive as you would expect at a hotel of this standard.
The room was clean and well kept.
I would recommend it for a relaxing break with quality.

Room Tip: We were overlooking the gardens , lovely !
