“Lovely B&B”
Reviewed 22 November 2012

Just got back from a 2 night stay in Brockenhurst after finding the Cottage Lodge through an interent search. It's a really lovely and comfortable B&B, and the wood burner in the snug room (with free cake!) was definitely a welcome sight after wandering around the village and the forest. The room was really clean and comfortable, and the staff were really friendly. I cannot fault this place at all, and would happily return!

We wanted a night away in the New Forest before our baby arrived and was keen to check out The Pig in Brockenhurst. Sadly they were booked up for accommodation so we looked for other places in Brockenhurst and found Cottage Lodge.
It was lovely - we're glad The Pig was booked up now. Lovely B&B, friendly and helpful service, nice bed rooms, snug with real fire, homemade cake and lots of tips of where to go and what to see.
Will head back there again.

We have just returned from a two night stay in The Cottage Lodge Brockenhurst with our Black Lab. We opted for the Morant Room which is one of the standard rooms but is dog friendly with wooden floors and a little patio which has gates that shut so that we could leave the door open and he was safe. There was also an outside tap should be have needed to give him a quick wash. We were prepared to leave him in the car whilst we had breakfast as we didn't want to eat in the room but were pleasantly surprised to be offered breakfast with Bodie in the snug/bar, which we accepted and it didn't bother the other residents. The fresh milk in the fridge is a nice alternative to processed carton milk at many B & B's and the free cake is also a nice touch. Breakfast was good with choice of fresh fruit or cereal and then cooked breakfast and toast. The only thing I would say is a little strange is that they ask you to leave you key whilst you are out in a key safe with all the others which is accessed by a code which all the residents have. As I like to think the very best in everyone you really do hope that everyone is honest but I would say that you can use the safe in your room for valuables. We really had a nice break whilst visiting friends locally and would definitely use The Cottage Lodge again, especially as nice dog friendly places to stay are hard to find.

We took a few days at the Cottage Lodge in November to see the Autumn colours. It is a warmer, more intimate and friendly experience than you would expect of even the smallest B&Bs and we would recommend it very much. The owner helped us plan our walks and visits every morning and they were all brilliant. The breakfast is yummy and it didn't bother us at all to say in advance which slot we wanted; since we knew from having stayed before that was freshly cooked and tasty.

Most of these reviews miss what, for us, is the central appeal of this place however. This is what it and all good B&Bs should do: evoke a sense of where it is. In this case, where it is is a vast and ancient woodland with wild horses roaming into town, tranquil woodland and deer in the clearings. The old Cottage Lodge, with it's warm snug for tea and reading, exposed beams and kind rosy faces does that exceptionally, and that alone deserves it an excellent review and our gratitude.

Ben and Charlotte.

We enjoyed a fabulous stay at Cottage Lodge-it really felt like a home from home.
The breakfast was amazing (although one day I had 2 sausages & rashers of bacon whereas the next only one?).
Staff were very friendly. Location was great, couldn't have asked to be in a cuter village-horses walking into Tesco Express!: )
Really clean and we were surprised that the beds were made & bathroom cleaned for a b&b.
I understand that it is a high quality b&b but did find price of stay a little steep (maybe due to half term as I am a teacher). Felt a bit gutted when the postcard in our room was offering such a great deal.

Only niggle was about hot chocolate we had pre-ordered. We were asked when we wanted it to be served in a 2-hour time slot in the afternoon when we arrived but the next day we had to go and ask for it as was 45mins late-the woman said 'oh would you like it now?'-seems a waste to ask in first place.
Lovely stay overall, a shame we missed out on opening of your restaurant as looked yummy and the local pub food left a lot to be desired! However the local Italian at the train station is brilliant - looks dingy but don't let this put you off the delicious, fresh food.

My partner and I visited in September excited by the good reviews. How very disappointing. Our room was below average and the breakfast arrangement doesn't really work. We were offered breakfast in our room but there was no table and only one chair! We refused and the only time we could eat in the dining room was 8.00'ish (can't remember the exact time) We don't expect to go on holiday and set our alarm, we do that every day for work! The reason for this is that they have half the amount of tables as rooms! The breakfast was good though. We complained but got the impression that the owner is rarely there, the staff were very polite though. We checked out pleased that they could only fit us in for one night and continued our New Forest break in alternative accommodation close by for half the price, nicer room and much better value for money. I don't think this is a 5* b & b...in my opinion.

Thank you for your review. I am glad the breakfast was good and that you enjoyed your stay in the New Forest National Park. If you are reading this review I would just like to reassure you that Cottage Lodge is a beautiful bed and breakfast located in the heart of the New Forest National Park village of Brockenhurst. Please feel free to read a good selection of reviews so you can get a good cross section of comments from guests who have stayed with us.

We try to be the best we can be. In the case of this delightful couple we didn't succeed in meeting their needs and I am very sad about this. I have written to them to apologise and I hope we will be in commuication soon.

If you are reading this review I expect it has brought up several issues for you. I would like the opportunity to expand on the comments made by this lovely reviewer.

I am the owner, Christina. I am in the business most days would be delighted to meet you if you come and stay with us. I do have the occassional day off. So, incase we don't meet for any reason you will find my private email address on the bottom of your invoice and I really encourage you to email me with any thoughts and comments you may have.

We have 15 rooms and 20 breakfast slots. The breakfast slots create a gentle flow of orders to the chef who freshly cooks your breakfast. We do this so that you get the best possible breakfast experience. The slots aren't set in stone. If there isn't a slot to your liking there is enough flexibility in the system to accommodate your personal timings. You can see from the other Trip Advisor reviews that this isn't an normally an issue.

We would positively encourage you to have a lie in and take breakfast in bed. We bring your breakfast in on trays with stands. Most peope snuggle up in bed with their breakfast. If this isn't for you then the trays are a good table and we can bring in extra chairs. Just let us know what you want and we will do our best for you.

We are not the cheapest Bed and Breakfast in the New Forest National Park. And there is a good reason. We belive you should have a top-of-the-range fire detection system tested every week and maintained properly. A first class health and safety regieme that was recently inspected by the Environmental Health Officer on an unannounced visit and pronouned to be of the highest order. You are paying for a well maintained building and well trained staff with a professional breakfast chef. You will be located in a highly desirable area in the middle of the New Forest National Park village of Brockenhurst just a few hundred yards from the open forest. And, sorry to say this, you are paying 20% VAT - most of which goes straight to the chancellor.

If you have any questions about this review I would be delighted to talk to you , Christina 01590622296

Had a lovely must need night away with my hard working, exhausted farmer husband at this gorgeous B&B in the middle of Brockenhurst. Very comfortable bed and extremely clean and welcoming. Really appreciated offer of tea & coffee with cake by the wood burner when you arrive. Breakfast gorgeous. All in all would highly recommend this B&B to anyone wanting a break in the New Forest.

Room Tip: Try and get one of the rooms at the back of the house so that you are not near the rather busy road...
