on arrival at 2.15pm told room not ready till 3.00 although we had proof we could be in by 2.00.
Access to second floor where our room 244 was via an old tiny slow lift.
On entering room 244 which was an estuary view room, we were greeted by a dark dismal room, dirty window which we could not see out of. Some lights were not working. Towels in bathroom were not white and fluffy but old hard grey with stains on one, which looked like poo and another one with holes in. After looking at the towels we decided to strip the bed and were shocked with what we found which was that the pillow cases were torn and when we removed them the pillows were covered with stains. The duvet cover was stained so we removed that and the quilt was totally covered in stains. When we removed the sheets which also looked dirty we were greeted with a mattress totally covered with brown and yellow stains which were disgusting and the mattress was completely misshapen and must have been years old. The settee in the room was old worn and tatty. The top of the Tv had thick black dust on it. The room smelt old and it was dark and dingy. We had to ring three times to reception and ask for a manager to come and look. We waited over half an hour for someone to come and in the end my husband had to go and fetch a manager. He eventually came back with a receptionist. The receptionist came and offered us an upgrade to room 203. When we went in this room we noticed the duvet cover and quilt were stained also but the receptionist told us she would get them changed, which she did and as we were only staying one night we said we would stay in that room. During the evening when we could have a good look round we noticed the following
The chandelier by the door was only held up by the wiring.
Hand towels were grey and hard
The bath towels were no larger than the hand towels
Light over the bathroom basin mirror did not work and the cover was broken and would not stay on the light
Insufficient power points.
Jacuzzi took over an hour to fill up did not work properly and took an hour to empty and no grab rails on the jacuzzi to help you in or out.
Floor tiles slippery when wet and loose.
Room generally dark dreary and tired.
Wardrobe door did not run smoothly
Only one armchair for two people
Window was dirty and covered by an old dirty piece of net.
Could not open window unless it was opened like a door.
11.15pm we were woken up by the night porter who said he had a complaint from the room below us that we were talking loudly. How could this have been when we were in bed asleep and we were very annoyed with him and he did not even apologise.
The breakfast the next morning was ok but we do not expect to have to do our own toast as we have never done this in any hotel we have stayed in. Its a pity the chef could not cook fried eggs
Generally our stay did not warrant £100 for the one night or anywhere near it and with all the problems we incurred we should have been offered a refund as a goodwill gesture from yourselves.
We will be returning to North Devon because we have to to visit my mother who is ill but no way will we not stay the the Durrant House Hotel and will not recommend it
We were dubious about using the restaurant for dinner but were advised that the food in the restaurant was good so we took a gamble and the food was good
