“good but let down by room”
Reviewed 5 April 2014

Stayed last weekend on a dancing break we had a good time only spoiled by our room 151 it was small with a mismatch of furniture the dressing table was just a table no draws the only draws where in to small bedside cabernet there was no wardrobe just a corner with a rail to hang you clothes up. The bathroom was small the sink was to large for the room we struggled to get past the toilet it self was cracked then on the Sunday the heating pact up the hotel and the staff where ok would stay there again if I had to but not this room

Room Tip: Our friends said there room 217 was ok

My wife and i stayed at this hotel in 2012 and found it to be really quite good.
Perhaps we were lucky but in contrast to some critics we found our room to be quite clean.
The en suite marble bathroom was really something else. The food was quite good and the staff very friendly and helpful. Entertainment was acceptable but nothing exceptional, with the usual turn of bingo or quiz. We booked the trip through Majestic Coaches on a drive yourself basis.
Unlike some of these drive yourself hotels there was more than ample room for parking, so for me that was a plus. The surrounding area is quite nice with much to see. My wife and I are people who mix well and enjoy other peoples company and chat. So am not deterred by the entertainment value. Intended to revisit a few weeks ago but was a little late in booking.
Will visit again soon! Thank you Majestic!

on arrival at 2.15pm told room not ready till 3.00 although we had proof we could be in by 2.00.
Access to second floor where our room 244 was via an old tiny slow lift.
On entering room 244 which was an estuary view room, we were greeted by a dark dismal room, dirty window which we could not see out of. Some lights were not working. Towels in bathroom were not white and fluffy but old hard grey with stains on one, which looked like poo and another one with holes in. After looking at the towels we decided to strip the bed and were shocked with what we found which was that the pillow cases were torn and when we removed them the pillows were covered with stains. The duvet cover was stained so we removed that and the quilt was totally covered in stains. When we removed the sheets which also looked dirty we were greeted with a mattress totally covered with brown and yellow stains which were disgusting and the mattress was completely misshapen and must have been years old. The settee in the room was old worn and tatty. The top of the Tv had thick black dust on it. The room smelt old and it was dark and dingy. We had to ring three times to reception and ask for a manager to come and look. We waited over half an hour for someone to come and in the end my husband had to go and fetch a manager. He eventually came back with a receptionist. The receptionist came and offered us an upgrade to room 203. When we went in this room we noticed the duvet cover and quilt were stained also but the receptionist told us she would get them changed, which she did and as we were only staying one night we said we would stay in that room. During the evening when we could have a good look round we noticed the following
The chandelier by the door was only held up by the wiring.
Hand towels were grey and hard
The bath towels were no larger than the hand towels
Light over the bathroom basin mirror did not work and the cover was broken and would not stay on the light
Insufficient power points.
Jacuzzi took over an hour to fill up did not work properly and took an hour to empty and no grab rails on the jacuzzi to help you in or out.
Floor tiles slippery when wet and loose.
Room generally dark dreary and tired.
Wardrobe door did not run smoothly
Only one armchair for two people
Window was dirty and covered by an old dirty piece of net.
Could not open window unless it was opened like a door.
11.15pm we were woken up by the night porter who said he had a complaint from the room below us that we were talking loudly. How could this have been when we were in bed asleep and we were very annoyed with him and he did not even apologise.
The breakfast the next morning was ok but we do not expect to have to do our own toast as we have never done this in any hotel we have stayed in. Its a pity the chef could not cook fried eggs
Generally our stay did not warrant £100 for the one night or anywhere near it and with all the problems we incurred we should have been offered a refund as a goodwill gesture from yourselves.
We will be returning to North Devon because we have to to visit my mother who is ill but no way will we not stay the the Durrant House Hotel and will not recommend it
We were dubious about using the restaurant for dinner but were advised that the food in the restaurant was good so we took a gamble and the food was good

Room Tip: Don't use this hotel find another one in the area

DHhotel, Manager at Durrant House, responded to this review, 1 April 2014
Thank you very much for taking the time to write a review for our hotel. We would like to let you know that your comments are very valuable to us since they will help us improve our quality and services at The Durrant House Hotel. We aim to ensure that our rooms are of an exceptionally high standard, and am disappointed that this may not have been achieved in your first room as I do understand that tastes can greatly vary. Which is why our Front of House Manager personally showed you an alternative room to ensure this met with your approval. We will always do our utmost to ensure we rectify problems immediately and am pleased to read that our Front Desk Manager and housekeeping staff followed this procedure, offered to resolve the issue and apologized for any inconvenience . We pride ourselves in the quality and condition of our rooms and rarely receive negative feedback.
We apologize for any inconvenience caused by interruption from our Night Porter, however acting upon a complaint received from a nearby guest it was the only room that could be heard to be emitting noise from a excessively loud TV.
However, I am very pleased to hear that you enjoyed your visit to The Olive Tree Restaurant, all of our produce is locally sourced and cooked fresh to order and I am glad to see this came across in the quality of the food.
At The Durrant House Hotel we value all our guests and customer feedback as this does help us to improve our service and standards of quality and we thank you for your review. We do hope that you will decide to visit us again soon.

Just spent a night at the Durrant House Hotel and it was absolutely fantastic. Right from the friendly helpful reception to the barmaid they were co operating and friendly. The room we stayed in was one with a jacuzzi bath and it was excellent and very clean. The restaurant was also very clean and large and the food was probably some of the best i have tasted. We will definitely be back for another stay. Thanks to Charli on the reception

Good hotel, good staff, good comfortable room, very good food at a very good price. Highly recommend this hotel that's well situated (20 minute walk into Bideford town and the Tarka Trail). Recommend the coast path walk to Appledore, Northam and Westard Ho!

Room Tip: Quiet rooms at the rear of the hotel.
