Picked the place by pure chance. Arrived quite late in evening. Plenty of parking space.
Reception was friendly and efficient.
Room itself looked like an 80s timewarp (which was nice) and the phone must have been old enough to vote (but it worked, which was the main thing).
Window a tad tricky to open (needed a bit of a stretch).
Comfortable though, and everything worked.
Visited the bar where the barman 'Lea' was the epitome of charm and competence.
Good breakfast choice and portions.
Nothing to fault, would stay again.

Stayed for three night in August 2014. Very large hotel with good reception bar and restaurant. food very good and staff very helpful. However despite some effort to upgrade certain areas this hotel is still generally tired looking in many areas and is in need of a serious makeover. We had a "superior estuary view room" that was far from superior. Bed and furniture was a bit worn in places and window was in poor condition. Bathroom was good but shower was poor. Good breakfast but "do it yourself" toast arrangement using two old tired and worn out toasters was ridiculous! The toasters were quite dangerous in my opinion. A bit over priced but nowhere near the worst i have stayed at. With a good update would be a nice hotel.

Room Tip: Ask to be located well away from the evening function room.

This hotel needs some serious investment in order to bring it up to modern day standards. There is a small forest's worth of dark wood panelling in the public areas and plenty of marble surfaces along with a huge mural on the dining room ceiling. These features all give the Durrant House a very dated feel. Our bathroom had obviously been upgraded at some time but sadly the standard of finish was very poor, industrial pipe work and crudely fitting tiles were much in evidence. The bathroom door showed a long history where various door handles had been fitted and replaced by others of different shapes and sizes. On the positive side, we found the staff very friendly and had no complaints about the food. There is ample parking which was a bonus.

I stay in hotels around the country on a regular basis and had been looking forward to staying overnight in this hotel but never again. I had read the reviews but decided to give it the benefit of the doubt as it had mixed reviews. I don't usually give reviews but am so disappointed in this hotel and still do not feel that the hotel is bothered that we did not have a good stay-no apology has been received. We arrived to check in and waited 30mins until 2pm. We had a lovely welcome and efficient service at reception. However, when we opened the door to our room there was an overpowering smell of what can only be described as smelly slippers/wet animals. We had to be somewhere straight away so just dumped our bags and raced back out of the room and returned later that evening to find the smell was still there. To cut a long story short, our room was filthy. Hairs in the bath, sink, all over the bathroom floor and the bathroom was smelly. Hairs on the pillows. Cobwebs in every corner of the room and a dirty table. I contacted reception to tell them about the smell and they asked if I needed housekeeping so I said 'yes please.' A girl called Agnes arrived with a duster, polish and air freshener. She agreed the room was smelly and when I showed her the dirty bathroom she apologised and offered to clean it again. She then told me it had been done and left. I went in there to run a bath for my niece as it was nearly her bedtime and saw that there were still hairs all over the floor and around the bath and the smell was still awful. I was physically sick for about 10 minutes. I then went down to reception and told them. They moved us to another room which was much better although it still had hairs in the bathroom and a dirty coffee table I had to clean with wet wipes but as it was already 730pm I had to settle for that as the children needed to be in bed. What was supposed to be a treat turned out to be a disappointment. Even the breakfast was awful -neither of us ate the soggy bread with a huge lump of salty scrambled egg on top and the coffee was horrible. It is a real shame as I had such high expectations. The staff were very friendly but this hotel needs a good clean and some love and care.

Room Tip: Make sure your room is clean as soon as you check in

We spotted an ad in the Bideford Bay companion quoting the £7.50 special so went on spec for dinner. The grand surroundings are fun, the staff lovely and the food great! We had the roast if the day which came with the biggest Yorkshire pud ever! One had the lasagne which was good and came with a generous portion of chips. We expected just I've cream for pud, but there was a good choice, trifle, creme brûlée and sticky toffee pud where chosen and were all simple but lovely! (And I'm fussy with creme brûlée!!) Compared to other - very costly and still average- places in the area you can do a lot worse for a meal out. There is also A la Carte for anyone wanting more. I'd go back.

Although is was a very reasonable £4 per night to take our Westie with us, there are no areas within or outside the hotel where dogs are permitted. They are not aloud to be left unattended in the room (a small problem if you want to breakfast together) so the hotel lost a lot of revenue as we had to go elsewhere to eat and drink. I appreciate that other guests may not want a dog around them but surely there could be an area somewhere in this quite large hotel where we could of had a meal or a drink with our dog ? It's pointless to allow dogs to stay and then not cater for dog owners.
The room was adequate - some rooms are reserved for dogs so obviously it was not going to be the best room in the place - but housekeeping could have a check on the details such as dusty bedside shades and curtain hooks missing; all of which makes it look a little shabby.
Staff were very friendly and the breakfast excellent - and yes we did eat together while she stayed in the room alone.

On arrival the building is fairly impressive, nicely set back from the road with a bit of a slope leading down to the entrance. The lobby is fairly impressive with all the marble and fish pond. On check in the staff are friendly and helpfull and quickly had me sorted into my room and booked me a table for dinner.

The room was nothing special, fairly large which was nice but as most of the other reviews have said, everything looks a little tired. I was in room 105, a double and the largest complaint i could have would be the temperature of the room, it was fairly stifling but this is most likely down to the time of year and position of the room. Other small things would be like some marks on the ceiling which appear to be water marks and the shower, limescale on the shower head and the shower head looking like it was nearly pulled off the wall. Another small point is that the walls seem to be fairly thin as you could here the tv's of nearby rooms fairly easily.

The food was very nice, diner on the first night i stayed and the roast is something pretty special, well cooked with excellant service throughout the meal. The room itself feels very old world with wood panneled walls and paintings on the ceiling, was slightly too warm for comfort when i stayed but again, most likely the time of year. The wifi was also patchy in the room but seemed to work in the lobby, you are warned about this by the hotel though with them saying that only some rooms have wifi.

Overall, i would recomend if you are looking for a reasonable place to sleep for a few days while exploring Devon, not so much if you are a couple looking for a romantic break (if you are in a double room like i was, the suites may be different) Good food and helpfull staff, but like a lot of other people have said, looking slightly tired and in need of some TLC.

Room Tip: On the first floor near the saunas, things tend to be fairly hot
