“Beautiful Hoops Inn”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 August 2014

OMG this place is SO Pretty, it was built in 1215 and the features of this gorgeous hotel have been very well looked after, our room was no 5, very spacious bedroom and very spacious bathroom, all decked out beautifully, the food brilliant, the beer cold, the gardens are gorgeous and the staff second to none. I can't recommend this hotel highly enough, a little on the pricey side but WELL worth it, loved staying her for our 2 day break!

Room Tip: Get rooms 3,4,5 or suite no 2, beautiful!

Had booked a four night stay in a so called, Superior Canopied Room, but left after one night. We had booked an evening meal in the restaurant after seeing the type of food available on various web sites but on arrival were informed that the meal would be served in the bar and even worse, that the menus were the same. On being served a very, very poor quality and basic meal I challenged the manager regarding the availability of the quality and type of meals that were shown not only on their, but also various other web sites, but was informed they were not available. I explained that if the hotel could not provide the quality of room and food that they were advertising then we would leave in the morning.

The room was tired and dirty and the bed had castors on the feet end and not the head end and therefore sloped back. We found it impossible to sleep and at one stage my wife even tried sleeping with her head at the foot end. There was black mould around the bath edge and taps and the lighting was very low, so almost impossible to shave by. The towel rail had not been, bled and only the bottom couple of rails got warm. We were kept awake until around 12:30 by noise from the bar, directly under the room and road noise.

If you want a relaxed, quiet, break with good food drive on, as the Hoops hasn’t decided if it wants to be a cross between a McDonald’s and a Holiday Inn or a romantic thatched hotel and restaurant.

Room Tip: Road side rooms are very noisy from traffic.

We stayed here for 3 nights. This place as real curb appeal, it is a chocolate box thatched inn, beautifully presented with flowers and lighting to add to its attraction. Once inside it as lots of small cosy rooms, and a friendly atmosphere. We stayed in the Mallow suit room 2, and at beening the most expensive room, I had great expectations, it would have been nice to have been shown to our room, but never the less we opened the door to a lovely large room, in keeping with the theme of the inn, canopied four poster bed, 2 seater settee, with tv, then seperate dressing area, and large bathroom with seperate large shower and double jacuzzi bath, very peacefull and quite, even with the road and a full bar below. The bed though lovely, was for us not particularly comfortable, as the mattress was soft and the springs pinged and the bed did creak every time you moved, that said, by the 3rd night we did sleep better.the shower was loverly plenty of hot water and a good size shower head, jacuzzi bath wonderfull. Breakfast was served in the resturant each morning, attentive service, nicely cooked english breakfast, cereals, fruit salad, toast, all the usuals to set you up nicely for the day. We did eat in the resturant on our first evening in the inn, but thought although the food was ok, it was not great value for the money paid, basic bar food at reasturant prices. Garden very pretty, with plenty of benches dotted around. All in all, lovely place to stay for a few days, within easy reach of some lovely places to visit.

Dear Reader, many of the reviews on this page and previous ones are for the restaurant, submitted by people who appear to have difficulty distinguishing between the two. I've done a separate review for the restaurant.

So - what's it like to stay in? I'd say, for pub accommodation, it's pretty good. It's really not in Bideford itself - so if you haven't got a car then you'll need a taxi from Bideford itself. The rooms are comfortable and quiet. Some of the workmanship in the bathroom left something to be desired but it wasn't a major problem. Breakfast was enjoyable - excellent pancakes with bacon and maple syrup.

Recommended.

After leaving it far too late to find accommodation, we stumbled upon the Hoops Inn after seeing a sign saying rooms available. We were surprised to drive into the carpark and find at least 50 cars. It must be good we thought! Turned out that we were able to get a lovely deluxe room with a fourposter bed and shower at a discounted price. Coming from Australia, we loved the fact that the Inn has been around since the 14th century and the bar area had tons of character. We thought the food was very good, the manager and staff lovely to deal with and nothing was too much trouble. We also got to meet some of the friendly locals. Couldn't ask for better than that!

We had dinner at the Hoops last night, two adults, two kids and two dogs.

Food was very good, water was provided for the dogs. Service was friendly and all in all was a very pleasant evening out.

We sat outside so can't comment on the dining room but the garden is lovely. There were lots of families here so maybe not ideal if you're looking for a quiet meal but it was perfect for our needs.

Not what I expected - Food was good but spoilt by poor service and loud music from a tinny CD player in the restaurant, also lots of Kids running around, not the place to go for peace and quite - Wouldn’t go back
