Owner description: Only one mile from Hartland Quay, Hartland Abbey lies across a narrow, sheltered valley which winds its way to the spectacular Atlantic Coast. Within a designated ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’ visitors may wander around the beautiful gardens and grounds which lead to the rocky cove. Peacocks and guinea fowl roam at will, whilst donkeys and Black Welsh Mountain sheep graze the Old Deer Park.Hartland Abbey is the lived-in family home of the Stucley family. Although it was built in the 12th century, remaining as a monastery for 400 years and passing through the female line three times, it has never been sold. Consequently, it contains collections of pictures, furniture and porcelain which have accumulated over many generations. The story of the Abbey mirrors local and national history at every turn. It has a friendly and lived-in atmosphere, so often absent in many of our nation’s historic houses, a point continually remarked upon by those who visit us.

The gardens are beautiful on a summers day only. The facilities look very tired and in need of a rethink by the owners especially the toilets, not for the faint hearted! It doesn't feel very welcoming to visitors but a necessity by the owners to bring some income to the estate. The guides are friendly but there isn't enough history on the abbey and the monks that occupied it before it was changed into a family home. There isn't attempt to give the public an artist impression of the abbey either unless we missed it. We had a pleasant walk to the beach. The cafe is well over priced so a visit there please be prepared to dig deep!

Staff were friendly and helpful, but the site makes access for wheel chair users very difficult. Tried to visit the walled garden but the nearby car park was roped off so unable to use that part of our ticket. The house is a bit sad and tired looking, some peeling wall paper and very little interpretation unless you opted to pay an extra £2 for a guide book. Compared to similar places which we have visited in the past it was all a little disappointing. I don't think we'd try it again or recommend it to friends.

It was a lovely sunny day when we visited so we saw it at its best. The old house has a fascinating history and the room guides were very knowledgeable and friendly. The gardens are beautiful.

Visited the abbey and gardens today had planned to go to Docton mill but encountered a very rude man presumably he was the owner so needless to say we did not stay and went to the abbey so glad we did the house is lived in and although big it feels cosy there are lovey walks to the gardens and beach ,and the food is also very good and an excellent cuppa. Hartland Abbey is well worth a visit and we would definitely go back.
