“Sound of the Sea”
Reviewed 12 June 2014

A stunning position and a most pleasant experience. We had 2 nights with a room -binoculars provided-nice touch -to relax in the evening sun watching the ever changing sea crashing on the fantastic rock formations. Our room was was just fine pleasantly basic. Ideal for us walkers with good friendly service where nothing seemed to be too much trouble. We will visit again!

The hotel is a lot bigger and more active than the south west path book suggests, this is not a bad thing. Rooms are fairly recently redecorated, although masses of water leaked on to the floor from the shower. There are baths in some rooms. Staff were amateur and food was disappointing. Great location, good hotel poor management.

We stayed here for one night whilst I walked the South West Coast Path.
The end room we stayed in had the most magnificent view over the ocean. Truly stunning. The room was large and clean. Had a very pleasant meal. Service was good.

We stayed overnight while we were completing the SW coast path as it is on the route. The room was comfortable and had a lovely view however the price (fixed all year round) was a little expensive at £100. The staff were very helpful and obliging and we had good service the only downfall was the evening meal in the bar/restaurant with my meal (chicken Balti) being very bland and small portions, it tasted and looked as if it had been reheated, (it had been on the menu the previous evening).

OK this hotel is in a great position, the room was superb, a bath was a bonus and the bed was absolutely gorgeous, the food in the bar/restaurant connected was great, this would have been an excellent stay if only the reception had been better.
We arrived there after hiking through thunder, hail, rain downpour and uncrossable river and so we really did want to dry out
First of all the reception didn’t know the date.
Next, I asked if they had a boiler room where we could dry our sodden boots. “No we haven’t” was the reply.
What, a big hotel with no boiler room?!
You can leave your boots on the rack here in reception.
Not likely, they will not dry there.
OK up to the (excellent) room, at least I could dry then along with my waterproofs on the towel rail.
WRONG, no heating on
Back to reception on our way to the restaurant, rang the bell, receptionist came. “Can we have some heating on in the room please?”
“I will check” she said, she came back, “No it is Summer and we don’t have the heating on in the Summer” This was May, it can get cold in May, we need to dry things in May.
“Is this an Hotel we said”
With that off she went again to see the manager whilst we took off our socks, put on wet soggy boots, went around to the bar (outside and back in again) took boots off, put socks on and ordered.
To there credit, someone came and said they could put the boots by the boiler until 9pm, we accepted, at 9pm they said that the boots were still wet and would leave them to dry overnight, GREAT
We were then told that we could use a way back to our room (through locked door)
The boots were dry next day and we went on our way
If you want to DRIVE to this hotel and have an excellent, really excellent bed, in an excellent large room with a bath, go for it
Take a sweater as it may be cold in May and the heating and towel rail will be OFF
If you walk there and are soaking wet, complain, forcefully and firmly, you could be lucky

Room Tip: Ask for one with a working radiator

We apologise that your welcome was not what you would have expected. I think after a long walk and being wet through, you are entitled to a little warmth! We have taken your comments on board and are going to introduce some heaters in the rooms, so that if there are guests like yourselves who would like more heat, they can do so, so thank you for that. I'm afraid with modern combi boilers, airing cupboards and drying rooms are a thing of the past but we did manage to get your boots dry for the next day. We also apologise that you weren't shown the internal access to the bar, especially as you had no spare shoes with you!
From your other comments, I think that you still liked to the hotel and hopefully with a few tweaks, we'll get it just right!

The location looked good on the website but the reality was sooo much better, absolutely brilliant. Walks both ways along high cliffs with lots of interesting geology . Hotel room was very good with amazing sea views. All mods cons and features as expected. Bar food was good quality pub food, not Michelin but well cooked, well presented and tasty. Nice St Austell beers
Overall package highly recommended

We love this place. We go often and the location is stunning in all seasons and in all weathers. Watching the sun go down on a summer's evening or snug inside as the winds blow and the waves crash- it is always a special place. Jill, Chris and their staff are great and the food is honest pub grub. It is family and dog friendly and there is always a warm welcome . What more can you ask? Try to be there on Sea Sunday, when the local band plays for the Sea Sunday evening service. Surrounded by the waves and with thoughts of all the lives lost in wrecks etc, it is a very real and poignant reminder of 'those in peril on the sea'.
