We enjoyed another very pleasant stay at The Royal - comfortable bed and good food. We stayed in one of the back rooms - very understandable fpr one night only and it was quiet. Please do something about the shower!

Our first time at a Brend Hotel. All the staff were friendly and helpful. There was a small problem with the basin waste and it was quickly resolved by moving us to a better room. It was a pleasant stay for 2 nights but seemed a bit lacking in something for the price. Will we stay with Brend again? Probably.

I stayed here in March for one night. In fairness I think I got the last room in the inn, so I would hope that the other rooms were a little more spacious than the one I stayed in. The storage heater had been on when I opened the door, so it was a bit like entering a sauna.

Once I opened the window however and got to work the old heating system, I settled in and had a good night sleep. Breakfast was very nice the next morning and the staff were lovely. If you like a hotel with a bit of character, this is for you, although if you are claustrophobic, stay away from the single rooms, particularly if you end up in the room I happened to stay in

The Royal was a comfortable base for our day trip to Lundy Island. We enjoyed the second floor room with the huge bay window and traditional flowered curtains, looking out on to the station
platform, the railway line now being the Tarka Trail. The reception staff were very helpful.
We also enjoyed dining in the historic Kingsley room with its very old panelling and elaborate plaster ceiling - and the view of the river. Portions of fairly traditional food were generous. The kitchen was obviously struggling to cater for hotel guests and a function downstairs each evening, and most of the waiting staff were being trained so service was slow.

We have stayed at various Brend Hotels for a number of years from time to time and have always been extremely satisfied with the value and the whole 'hotel experience'. This time was nearly as good but not quite. Firstly, the good: bed, linen, cleanliness, room, attention to detail, well trained staff (generally) and the 'old-fashioned' 'Miss Marple' experience was unchanged. Indeed, it was clearly aimed at this market and all looked fine. But......

The food at the Royal was not really very good. At best it was edible, but nothing at the standard one would expect of a hotel of this quality. For example: on the first night we both chose the roast of the day (rather too late within the dinner 'slot' on the first night). We should have known better. It was a slab of lamb in a congealing and thick gravy. Mint sauce was offered but was clearly spooned at table from a jar of 'unreconstructed' 'mint sauce'. Vegetables were hard, 'kept warm' sprouts, red cabbage and sliced new 'farmhouse' potatoes, according to the waiter. However there were ample soggy 'roast' potatoes served on the plate with the lamb. It was not a good experience.

Additionally my first course of pate was not nice. It was quite unpalatable as to taste and texture, soggy and 'odd'. I could not finish it.

Breakfast next day was ok. We both had kippers. (Slightly overcooked). Toast was made with cheap, sliced industrialised bread.

Second night dinner was better, if not fabulous.

Final breakfast was fairly disastrous. My husband ordered smoked haddock without an egg. I ordered a poached egg 'off toast' with the request that the white of the egg must be cooked completely because otherwise I could not contemplate eating it. It arrived not quite thus cooked. Restaurant manager was quite abrupt "Do you want it to be put back to cook more?? Well yes please, but not to be like a bullet.

Some little time later, husband's fish arrived. It was raw beneath a slight covering of 'cooked'.
He had no choice but to send it back.

Result: breakfast ruined for both of us. (My egg arrived back at the same time as recooked fish, and was a rubbery bullet.) No apology from anyone was offered and we were kept waiting for a considerable time for our food to be returned while others were served before us. Not our fault the food was either inedible or not cooked to the standard requested.

To summarise: all fine apart from the food which was not nice generally and the service was not congenial when the quality was contested.

What a shame.

On going to the royal for Mother's Day lunch I was surprised on entering that there was nothing special to mark the occasion no free drink at the door for the mums ,no fresh flowers on the tables or even any favours as a treat ,but quick enough charging £4 extra for the roast because it was Mother's Day a bit one sided I think shame on you Brends

A lovely place, easy to get to all tourist attractions. The staff were EXTREMELY pleasant and helpful. The food fantastic with excellent choice of menu beautifully presented and really hot.
Good clean rooms with tea, coffee facilities. Would use this hotel again. Good value for money.
