We stayed for one night for a wedding function nearby. The booking by phone was easy and were made to feel really comfortable. We arrived at the Hotel and the receptionist was extremely polite and efficient. The room was lovely, the breakfast was very good and the service overall could not be faulted. Check out was easy and again the receptionist was first calss.

I'd probably stay in the Royal again, but our room was right in the top of the building and was almost unbearably hot on the first night. We requested and received a fan on the second night which made things much better. Overall cleanliness was good, and the hotel is situated conveniently on the waterfront of Bideford. Other points that might be useful: the breakfast good, but the shower was not good.

Room Tip: If you're staying during good weather, request a fan as there doesn't seem to be air conditioning!

We booked this via Booking.com and were charged £70 B&B. We received a welcome email prior to check in, which was good. Having seen the pictures, this is obviously a traditional sea side hotel, and to be fair, we expected it to have seen better days. On arrival, we missed the car park, which is just off the roundabout. Check in was informative and welcoming and we were told we were in Room 218, and had been given a complementary upgrade - which was a very pleasant surprise. The building is traditional, and very well maintained. It was clean and welcoming and not tired at all. The lift is old but serves a purpose. We were on the 2nd floor, in the eaves, which could be a pain if you are very tall, but we were okay. Corporate room but very well furnished. Large bed and separate TV viewing area with 2 comfy chairs. Desk, chair, work station, free wifi. Dark, heavy curtains, yee agh. Overlooked the road but good soundproofing, but able to open windows also. Good quality bedding but towels not big enough. Could hear people walking on corridor outside but not a problem. Slept very well. Breakfast, was formal with allocated table by server. Good quality produce, but just not a refined breakfast - expected better and sauteed potatoes very strange. The main problem with this accommodation was the amount of hairs we found in our bathroom. We took the shower curtain out of the bath, and i don't know if the hairs had been lurking on the curtain, but a whole clumpful ended up on the floor next to the toilet. Everywhere else in the hotel, appeared very clean. We mentioned this on check out and the receptionist dealt with it very well. She thanked us for our feedback and said housekeeping would get straight on it. On leaving, we have received a further email, offering us a deal, if we return to this chain of hotels, which is very good. We are marking this on the upgraded room, which for £70 was excellent VFM. We would return and would recommend.

The staff are charming and helpful, and the food is excellent. However the hotel is looking 'tired' and needs a face lift. Our room was OK - clean but smallish with noisy plumbing. The hotel also lacked ambience and was a bit staid for our tastes. Has a lot of potential, just needs a bit of TLC.

Stayed at the Royal the night before sailing to Lundy, and it was very friendly. the room was large and comfortable for myself (a double) and my 4 year old (a single) and we had use of a fan. The hotel is over the bridge and a short walk from Bideford quay which means it is in a quiet part of town, so it's a short stroll to pop out for an ice cream. the hotel is large but the staff are friendly and compared with Ilfracombe prices it is very good value.
