“Lovely afternoon out”

The house was lovely - it had a craft fair on too. We really loved the walled garden - nobody was in there but us - for no particular reason that I could see. I expect the gardens are going to be amazing this summer.

The Wagoners museum was interesting too.

Only downside is that the café service is extremely slow. Yes, it was busy - but i have been to busier cafés who serve you quicker. The queue went right out of the door at one point and we stood 15 minutes (yet we were inside the door when we arrived). There were not enough staff and they were too busy chatting! The cakes and tea were lovely though.

We've often passed Sledmere but decided to visit over Easter. We are HHA members so we could use our cards to gain entry.
The house itself was lovely with a great atmosphere and helpful staff (the lady that greeted us was delightful) but there was no signage in the rooms or information about the paintings and furniture. It was a nice idea to have local craftsmen and women showing their skills and it really brought the house to life. But I wanted to know more about what I was viewing in the rooms! How much would it cost to produce some laminated information sheets?
The gardens were lovely but the tiny map of the grounds was basically useless.
We then attempted to get a cup of tea and a slice of cake and I have rarely seen a more shambolic and disorganised set up in my life. We just about managed to get though the door to join a short queue which barely moved in 20 minutes.
The staff, whilst smiling, didn't have a clue and had to keep checking prices on everything. Other customers were missing parts of their orders and were not happy.
Unbelievably they then tried to charge us £26 for two cups of tea and two cakes! Fortunately they recalculated, but what was going on? This place could be a gold mine but people were coming to the door, finding they couldn't even get in, and walking away.
The ladies toilets were a disgrace and were obviously not being checked regularly - paper and mud all over the floor, and only one hand drier working.
I am sure that houses like Sledmere cost an exorbitant amount to run, but equally people like to feel they are getting value for money. We left feeling very disappointed.
For only £9.50 (50p more than Sledmere) you can visit Beningbrough Hall and get to see a well run, efficient, well signed house - with clean toilets and an excellent tearoom and café!

This Stately Home is one in my opinion not to be missed. There is always enjoyable days out to be had throughout the year with 40 s War time Splendor, Medieval reenactments, and open house days etc to name but a few. The grounds are fabulous with great walks to be had around the estate. Lots to see and do and the house is beautifully laid out. There is a shop and restaurant and the food is locally sourced and is very good. Great for people of all ages, you will not be disappointed if you visit. The staff are very helpful and knowledgeable so don't be afraid to ask them for anything.

We live only a few miles from Sledmere House so it is our local stately home . The house is not huge but well worth a visit, there is beautiful plasterwork on the ceilings. On Sundays a local organist plays on the house organ which adds to the atmosphere. Throughout the year there are many events held within the grounds i.e. Gymkana, car rallies etc. there is a cafe with outside seating if the weather is fine.

We had passed this house on several trips but decided to make a special visit and glad we did as we had a lovely time. The house itself is beautiful and comfortable like any home, the staff are all very polite, friendly and knowledgeable. We also had our lunch in the cafe after a lovely walk around the grounds where we saw the herd of deer
