“Beverley's other gem”
Reviewed 21 July 2014

St Mary's would stand out in most towns , but here it could be easily overlooked as people naturally gravitate to the Minster. The church has many fascinating features including its colourful ceiling and the 'misericords'

“As good as the Minster, on a human scale”
Reviewed 21 June 2014

Unusual high quality carvings, not so high up and easier to see than some of those in the Minster. Don't miss the Minstrel's pillar near the central tower, and the archway carving meant to have inspired Tenniel's image of the White Rabbit for Alice in Wonderland.

“Very interesting place”

Best to visit with a guide as the history is fascinating including what I seem to recall as being a carving on which the 'Cheshire cat' is based.

“So much history.”
Reviewed 28 May 2014

This was the people's church as opposed to the Minster which served the Friary. We were shown round by a lady guide and, although we have lived near Beverley for over twenty years we knew nothing about St Mary's. It is so very interesting. The ceiling with English kings and queens painted on it is amazing. You look through a wheeled mirrored trolley to save your neck and read the information on a card as you go.
Lewis Carroll is said to have been inspired to include the white rabbit in Alice in Wonderland after seeing the carved stone rabbit here. Then there is the story of the bullet holes in the window and pew and the minstrels and the duel fought by two Danish boys. So much history you could spend the day learning all about it!

“One of the best parish churches”
Reviewed 28 May 2014

Pevsner says that this is one of most beautiful parish churches in the country and he is right. Enough said!
