“Professional and artistic”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 June 2013

John Robinson is an artist and a professional.
Our experience of Whites Restaurant was memorable, and actually one of the best we have had in a restaurant anywhere in the world, albeit without some of the iconic views!
Two choices, the tasting menu, and à la carte – we chose the latter – and could have selected any of the dishes. Food presentation, quality, and the fusion of ingredients and flavours is exceptional. The amuses-bouches (before and between all courses) were all a joy; home-made bread and butter, outstanding.
The wine list is nice, varied, imaginative and sensibly-priced.
The restaurant is small (maybe 24 covers), but nicely laid-out for privacy and intimacy.
The staff are delightful, knowledgeable (full marks to the lady who knows all the cheeses), perceptive, and discreet.
The final impressive touch is that the owner-chef, who has been visible at his craft in the kitchen throughout the evening, steps out to introduce himself and check that you have enjoyed, as you leave.
Deeply impressive – we’ll be back, for the tasting menu!
One note, to a minority of diners, and not within the control of the management – gents, don’t turn up in jeans, regardless of how much you paid for them. You are disrespectful to the artistry and class of the establishment, to your ladies, and to the other diners who made the effort!
Well that’s just my old-fashioned view and I’m sticking to it!!

“Beverley Gem”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 June 2013

Anybody who complains about the standard of this restaurant is probably lacking taste buds. Genuinely superb food from a gourmet chef who has real flair - I can seriously recommend the turbot. In addition, the prices charged, including those in the wine list, will not break the bank when compared to similar establishments.

However, please be aware that the portions and presentation are 'nouvelle cuisine', so, if you really hungry, make sure you have eaten something before you go.

We were a table of six on Friday 17th May and I have to say we enjoyed our meal. I would certainly go back when in the area.

“Needs a maitre d!”

The chef here really cares about people having a Good time however the standard of good and service are not in correlation

The waiting staff are all young and v polite but lacked finesse

The food was ok (say 7/10) but it ain't no winteringham fields - some dishes were good, others were ok but not amazing

I don't think we'd go back over the Westwood or winteringham fields

“must try harder”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 April 2013

We have been to this restaurant twice before; and felt at the time that this had the right attributes to make it to the top. On this particular visit the kitchen extraction wasn’t working effectively. We were offered both the carte and tasting menu. The smell of the restaurant didn’t invite a long winded tasting menu. We choose two course from the a la carte both our main course fish dishes where overcooked and the starters not more than mediocre in taste. This chef had showed all the talent to make it to the top, it seems to us that corner cutting and poor cooking will not allow this to happen; must try a lot harder as we have great restaurant choices in Yorkshire.
