We have been visiting Whites for a number of years and now that we live more locally, will almost certainly be there far more frequently.
The staff are very friendly and enthusiastic and nothing is too much trouble. There is only a tasting menu available now and it certainly lives up to its description as a "surprise" menu. All of the food was delicious and beautifully presented, but the highlights were venison which was meltingly tender, tempura samphire and homemade soda bread with treacle. There were a couple of dishes which were a little disappointing: the smoked eel in a wild garlic veloute was so smoky that it overpowered the delicate garlic flavour (it was however still delicious - I am being really picky here!) and the chocolate coating around a yummy coconut dessert had a tad too much gelatine in it. These are however minor niggles and overall the place never disappoints and we are very much looking forward to returning!
John the chef is very personable and we would have loved to have stayed and chatted to him...but it was the night of the first England World Cup match, and I suspect we would not have been popular if we had outstayed our welcome :-)! Finally one huge plus is that we can now walk home after our night out!
