“staying in a cloister”
Reviewed 30 March 2014

We stayed there and it was quite good.
The cloister has a big garden which is nice, because you can sit outside and read a book.
Unfortunately they don't offer cooked meals or packed lunches for classes anymore.
The cloister is good for cyclists. You can spend the night there and move on.
Upstairs they still have very old wallpaintings which you can look at, but can naturally not touch.
Upstairs there is also a big community room with loads of games and books.

What a really nice YHA. Really helpful vounteers, good facilties and very comfortable. We had a 3 bedroom, ensuite with a view of the Minister. Well equipped kitchen. What more could anyone want. The town is really nice - lots of independent shops and some good eateries.

Wow, I stayed here with friends one weekend in September and was totally amazed at the buildings history and the restoration. We had a ground floor en suite room with space for 3 bunk beds. Lots of beautiful & quirky around the building from recently discovered wall paintings to beams, to ovens hidden by bunk beds and fire places. There is also a room with the history and renovation detail and plenty of books about the area and historical places
We were impressed by the kitchen facilities too, all very clean and well organised with planty of equipment
The place is spotlessly clean and tucked away by the side of the minster
Highly recommended as cheap but a historical & beautiful building, well worth a visit

Room Tip: Ask for details about the room when inquiring/booking, some are upstairs and there are various sizes

It's been many years since staying in a YHA so surprised to see how far they have come. En-suite..really ? The only room available was a 6 person bunk room, so paid over the odds for me and two kids. The facilities are great, everything you need in the kitchen. The great hall upstairs is comfortable and has a huge fireplace which I imagine looks great in winter. Lots of board games to keep kids happy. The garden at the front is lovely, kids enjoyed playing out there.
Good base to visit York, park and ride advised.
Only criticism is the rather clinical toilet and shower room...what you would expect in a hospital, not a medieval building. Also lots of clunking about from the room above us.

Room Tip: Get a room upstairs if poss.

Beverley YHA is a restored friary 40 yards from Beverley Minster. The hostel teems with history with friezes from the 17th century lovingly preserved. The common room is very comfortable and is in the old Great Hall. The gardens are excellent for relaxing in and Beverley itself is a town that is buzzing. Love the whole place.

Room Tip: Old building. many nooks and crannies. Managers were super helpful.

A small group of us stayed here for 2 nights. Newly refurbished, the friary was my first hostel experience and I shall do it again. Clean, spacious and welcoming. The building it's self was amazing and it was just a stones throw away from the minster. The room we had slept 6 but there was just the 3 of us in there for the 2 nights. The toilet and showers were always clean and the wardens were pleasant and helpful.

Room Tip: Take a padlock for the safe storage boxes under the bunks.
