“An average to good B&B”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 October 2013

The "average" rating is bordering on "good" - and this could easily be achieved by the owners spending a little on refreshing some of the decor and fittings. A clean and comfortable B&B with polite and helpful staff. For the money, it is perfectly good value.

Very friendly staff, fairly clean and tidy but could do with some modernising. Benefits from having a great restaurant. Location not exactly picturesque, but practical for sightseeing around the dales.

Located betwixt a caravan park, GSK labs and a golf course. For those thinking of wandering into town centre or to Bowes Museum, take some comfy shoes, it is over a mile. Parking is easy. Odd entrance to hotel down narrow corridor past lavatories. Friendly greeting and indeed it turns out that this man is part of the family that own the inn and is the cog in the wheel that makes everything tick along. Quite odd bedrooms, beds comfy, carpets filthy, towels good, shower room totally unacceptable. My room had a terrace which was probably actually bigger than the room itself. There was a bistro table and chairs. On the table sat a flower pot saucer full of dried out previously sodden cigarette butts. Downstairs to bar for a drink, a few locals in. Dinner was perfectly acceptable and because they had a special offer on which allowed two to have steak and a bottle of wine made for a good value meal. Once again the main man turns his hand to bar work then waiter. Quiet night's sleep. Breakfast was fine. The bathrooms need serious attention. The staff whether they be the owners or employees are clearly dedicated so please whoever is in charge get things sorted. Thanks

Today we popped out for Sunday lunch and on arriving we were put in a dimly lit part of the reteraunt. We were positioned next to the cleaning cupboard and right next to the kitchen. We didn't mind at first but it started to get more and more annoying as the only two members of waiiting staff were practically running past us every two minutes. The main reason we were so unimpressed was the poor quality of the meals. The veg that was served was barely enough to feed one never mind 3. When we requested some more the lady abruptly put a bowl of brocilli in front of us and this was after we heard the chef shout some abuse about it in the kitchen. She then informed us that parsnips etc weren't cooked. The meat was riddled with fat and gristle and the potatoes etc were luke warm. We were then informed that the second course of our meal would take another 20minutes and this was after waiting 10minutes for plates to get cleared etc. On complaining about the bill the lady informed us that they were very short staffed. Not my problem. She then took 2pounds off the bill. Will not be returning there again. Dissapointing and a let down.

We stayed at the Redwell for two nights, April 15/16. We got a pleasant smile from the young lady behind the bar who helped us to our room. For a two nights stay it was what we wanted, clean, average size and although it was on the main road we both slept fine.

Plastic cups in the bathroom?! Over breakfast on the Wednesday we did chat to the manager (?) who explained the decent glasses they'd provided for a couple of years had either been broken or stolen. They are having a rethink. We chatted some more about a few niggles - our bed not being made up and also chatted with the cleaner who was so apologetic that we forgave her. We left feeling we'd aired our grievances and been listened to.

Food. We arrived about 1.30 pm, so decided to have a sandwich in the bar - not the best we've had with what I'd called standard supermarket sliced. Such a shame, as bread in the restaurant is baked on the premises. The manager explained they didn't have time to bake bread for lunch time. As there's a decent baker in Barnard, buy it in.

We had an evening meal there on the Monday and although there was nothing we could complain about it was average. Chef's night off, perhaps.

Went Friday night for a meal whilst visiting Barnard Castle with a group of friends. I chose the meat pie, it was ver ver good, we had eight of us seated and everyone's meals were very good and tasty.
Then...
We returned again on the Sunday, but this time the food was poor, the meat pie pastry was so hard, it was impossible to cut. The ham, eggs and chips was 3 small slices of supermarket ham, 2 fried eggs and 6 chunky chips, really really poor value for money, but it was as described on the menu I suppose.

Lesson learnt, no return from us
