“A little disorganised and over priced”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 August 2014

The food was good but for the price I would have expected a little more. The staff in general were nice with the exception of the lady who insisted on leaning over people to serve others their food without a smile or any small token of conversation. They were busy on the day we visited but the speed they worked to clear tables and seat people actually turned a few patrons away.

“Service without a smile”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 July 2014

We called in for refreshments after our children had done a workshop. What a miserable lot and in need of a good nights sleep judging by the constant yawning. Definitely not child friendly. More effort on customer service required.

“Badly run cafe”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 July 2014

We visited her last Saturday afternoon for a cup of tea and a piece of cake. As you arrived at the cafe there was a sign asking you to wait to be seated, the cafe was reasonably busy but certainly not full, there were quite a lot of tables that had been vacated but were covered in dirty pots and staff seemed to be very slow at clearing these tables.

After a fairly short wait we were told to find a table that ha been cleared! We then had to wait about ten minutes for someone to take our order and then another twenty minutes to get our tea and cake and that was only when my husband saw it sitting on the side of the counter with the tea going cold waiting for someone to bring it to our table that he went and collected it himself.

There was only one poor chap behind the counter dealing with orders which we're pilling up on the counter waiting to go out to customers. We kept seeing staff go out to the kitchens at the back to collect one thing at a time. One young man just seemed to spend most of his time hovering about the cafe, he seemed more concerned with fiddling with his hair and reluctant to clear away dirty china that staff kept pilling up on a few tables that should have been properly taken away, this was not only an eyesore but these tables could have been used for more customers.

Our tea and cake was ok but I would never go back to this cafe, it was quite farcical the inefficiency of the whole place.

“Extremely disappointing.”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 July 2014

We have eaten here before and whilst not considering the Cafe Bowes particularly outstanding, we have previously found it adequate. However, certainly not on our last visit. We anticipated it being busy...after all it was lunchtime in the middle of summer so obviously you would expect a large number of customers. We didn't have to wait too long before our order was taken but it was what happened after that which could either be viewed as a comedy of errors if one was being charitable or gross inefficiency by someone responsible for the catering.
We had no complaints about the staff serving in the cafe...indeed we felt sorry for them. Having placed our orders, our drinks arrived and after some delay, one of the waiters informed us that one meal wasn't available because the cafe had run out of eggs! Another choice was made and after a few minutes, another staff member came to say that meal was no longer available but reassured one of us that the same meal was available for her. Two out of the four meals arrived and then yet another staff member came to say that the meal which had been confirmed as available had in fact been taken off the menu.
Only two of us actually got the meal we had ordered but they left much to be desired. The beef panini was more cheese than beef and was served with a tired looking salad. To be fair, we were told that we would not be charged for one meal but for the quality of the food, prices are perhaps a little excessive.
Whilst accepting the cafe was busy, surely given that it was the middle of summer , the cafe management would expect that, so to run out of something as basic as eggs seems unforgivable.
We were , therefore, very disappointed and if we visit the Bowes museum again, we would not eat in the cafe.
