The location of Barnard Castle is imposing - overlooking the River Tees from the high hill that it stands on. The castle is in ruins - mainly walls with a main tower - its history is interesting , beating back the Scots , putting down revolts in the north against Elizabeth I .
If the sun is shining this is a great spot to meander around and enjoy the views - maybe even take a picnic in with you and enjoy a peaceful hour. However if is raining there is not much to see.
The castle is run by English Heritage and as such costs £5-50 to get in.
