“Great views over the River Tees - visit weather dependant”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 July 2011

The location of Barnard Castle is imposing - overlooking the River Tees from the high hill that it stands on. The castle is in ruins - mainly walls with a main tower - its history is interesting , beating back the Scots , putting down revolts in the north against Elizabeth I .

If the sun is shining this is a great spot to meander around and enjoy the views - maybe even take a picnic in with you and enjoy a peaceful hour. However if is raining there is not much to see.

The castle is run by English Heritage and as such costs £5-50 to get in.

“Really nice place for a walk and a picnic”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 May 2011

This is a really nice and picturesque place for a good long walk, you have to take it as it is, the castle is mostly a ruin after all, but it is no less picturesque for it! If the weather is nice and sunny, I really recomend bringing a picnic out here.

“Not a great deal of this castle left...”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 April 2011

It's obvious from pictures readily available on the internet that there isn't a much of this ruined castle remaining. There is only one tower still intact. You can climb to the top but you'll probably have to queue for the one good vantage point that gives you a good view over the town. Fortunately the town of Barnard Castle is lovely and the magnificent Bowes Museum is just down the road so when you've finished you're (possibly brief) visit to the castle (i'd recommend taking a picnic and eating within the grounds so you get your money's worth) you can go along have a free gawp at the exterior of that instead.
