“Lovely market town”

Easy parking and interesting privately owned shops and cafes. A pleasant walk on paths surrounding the castle.

“Windswept but interesting”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 February 2014

We decided to visit on a day that was showery and windswept but this seemed to add to the atmosphere.

Do not expect full majestic buildings as most of the castle is now just walls and ruins. The masonry being nicked to build other places near by. It is still, however, a very interesting place and is dripping in history.

English heritage could do with replacing a few of the notice signs abound the place, as some of them have surcumbed to the elements.

If you have a buggy or a wheelchair access to some of the areas would be difficult if not impossible so that needs to be considered when taking a family trip to the castle. Unless, there is something major on this is not a full day trip and so should be combined with a day out to another attraction in the area.

“Don't be hungry at 4.30 on a weekday.”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 February 2014

Travelling back to Co Durham from Yorkshire dales and we decided we would stop in Barney for tea as we hadn't had any lunch. We walked round the whole town and found nowhere that was doing hot meals at 4/4.30pm. In this day and age that's bizarre. Anywhere else and you can normally find plenty of pubs doing food all day, not here. For an otherwise thriving market town we found this very strange. Don't get me wrong, I like Barney, but on this one issue it's back in the dark ages.

“Peaceful small town”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 February 2014

Barnie is a nice town. Lovely mixed architecture, some fun little shops, a nice castle ruin and a small market to explore. The river is beautiful, many nice walks start here.

“Independent shops and a good base from which to explore.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 January 2014

Barnard castle is a good centre from which to explore the beautiful area of teesdale. It has many lovely independent shops in addition to a centrally located supermarket and a petrol station at the darlington road end of town. The Bowes museum and gardens are beautiful and there is plenty to do even on a rainy day.
