A delightful town with a lot of history. The town is well kept and not the usual high street with bland countrywide chains.

I have been here on a few occasions with my two sons and just my husband and found the place just lovely. The castle is great, along with Bowes museum. There are many shops and tea shops along the high street that a worth a visit.

Easy parking and interesting privately owned shops and cafes. A pleasant walk on paths surrounding the castle.

We decided to visit on a day that was showery and windswept but this seemed to add to the atmosphere.

Do not expect full majestic buildings as most of the castle is now just walls and ruins. The masonry being nicked to build other places near by. It is still, however, a very interesting place and is dripping in history.

English heritage could do with replacing a few of the notice signs abound the place, as some of them have surcumbed to the elements.

If you have a buggy or a wheelchair access to some of the areas would be difficult if not impossible so that needs to be considered when taking a family trip to the castle. Unless, there is something major on this is not a full day trip and so should be combined with a day out to another attraction in the area.
