“A nice castle with fantastic views.”
Reviewed 28 May 2014

I've been passing through Barnard Castle for almost 40 years, and I finally decided it was time to visit the castle (after joining English Heritage). The building sits on top of a cliff overlooking the river and is a spectacular site as you drive in from the A66. It was wet on our visit but we still have a fab time exploring. We parked in the town centre in the free parking spaces and walked over (it really is not far). The lady at the desk was very friendly. In the castle itself there are still some interior rooms and we climbed to the top of the round tower. There are some lovely views from the top. We plan to make a return visit when the weather is better.

“Nice market town which still has some independent shops”
Reviewed 28 May 2014

A lovely place to visit with lots to see and do. Visit to castle is recommended as well as St Mary's Parish Church by the Market Cross. Some really nice independent shops and lots of places to eat and drink. Bowes Museum within easy walking distance of town centre and lots of free parking.

Lovely vista from these ruins of river and countryside, and can enjoy sit down with ice cream afterwards.

“Everything you want from a medieval ruined castle”
Reviewed 26 May 2014

Imposing setting, great castle and grounds. Fantastic views of the valley below. One of the better castles in the county. Very close to the town centre which is a pleasant place.

“Town and Countryside!”
Reviewed 24 May 2014

A charming Market Town to stroll round and enjoy. The Castle is a short walk from the centre and is a beautiful ruin with fantastic views and walks down to the river. The splendid Bowes Museum is on the edge of town and also has a great cafe.
