I've been passing through Barnard Castle for almost 40 years, and I finally decided it was time to visit the castle (after joining English Heritage). The building sits on top of a cliff overlooking the river and is a spectacular site as you drive in from the A66. It was wet on our visit but we still have a fab time exploring. We parked in the town centre in the free parking spaces and walked over (it really is not far). The lady at the desk was very friendly. In the castle itself there are still some interior rooms and we climbed to the top of the round tower. There are some lovely views from the top. We plan to make a return visit when the weather is better.
