We had a really good meal here, but despite only eating 2 courses, it took 2 hours to come and the pub seemed completely unprepared for the fact that there was a major mass-participation sporting event happening in the town that weekend. The service was friendly, but the kitchen was clearly completely overwhelmed, to the point that we nearly left without waiting for dessert.

We are in the area on holiday and if we were staying close to this pub we would, quite frankly, eat here every day to try out every dish on the menu.

It was refreshing to actually be challenged by choice than the usual, pedestrian offer that so many pubs seem to have - the traditional, safe menus consisting of all the usual suspects.

Current menu here to name but a few... choose from fish stew with fennel, rabbit and black pudding pie, beef and oyster pie, pan haggerty for the veggies... I could go on but I hope you are getting the drift. No puff pastry pies, no burgers, no deep fried this, that or the other, nor everything with chips!

Service was great. The food was quality and we are fussy. I'm a good cook but I would have been proud to have produced the flavours these meals provided.

Did think the portions could have been slightly more generous but I'd rather quality over quantity and not bulked out with microwaved veg and twice fried chips. My tip would be to go for a starter and a main which will still be less that £15 a head.

What was great for us as well is that in contrast to many other establishments we tried in Barnard Castle, our hounds were welcomed. It seems that they have accommodation with rooms specifically assigned for quadrupeds and bipeds, (as well as non doggie people), one room also opens up to a small enclosed garden which, as any dog owner will know, is a super bonus.

The food was fab. Others dining there thought it was fab. It's new for the pub and they are trying it out. Get there and make the most of it. Please, don't let it fail.

A group of us cyclists (16 of us ) stayed here for one night 9/8/2013. The rooms were amazing, real value for money. If you love old traditional furniture and decor then you won't be let down. They did'nt have any food on in the evening so we had to eat out but there are plenty of places with good prices. The breakfast was big, piping hot and lots of it. The staff were friendly. They stored our bikes in the lock up at the rear of the property.
The conservatorty area was lovely where we all sat. The beer garden was very nice also. I would definately stay hee again as would the rest of our group.
