“great country pub”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 April 2010

Stopped at the fox and hounds at the start of the month whilst doing the W2W cycle route we were in the recently refurbished Teesdale room which looked great and believe me after a couple of hard days in the saddle the steaming hot spa bath was just perfect, then devoured some of the best fish and chips i have ever had!! and quite a bit of black sheep!! All in all loved the pub and my stay, and will so be back!!

A nice traditional old pub with very friendly staff but goodness it could do with some refurbishment! Filthy carpets, mould on the walls and the shower head, and everything a bit decrepit. Saggy old mattress on the bed. The light above the sink in our bathroom didn't work - just as it hadn't when we stayed there last year!

So not really worth £75 for B&B, but I guess they have the monopoly as there is nowhere else to stay in this lovely village of Cotherstone. They do have a parrot though!

Only has three rooms so difficult to see how they could get it wrong. What they need to do is spend a bit of money dragging this hotel into the 21st century.

Furniture reminded me of the kind of stuff you buy in charity shops, all dark wood, old fashioned, boring. TV parked on top of wardrobe, tacky. Bedding, one very flat pillow each. When lying in bed we looked straight up at large crack in ceiling where water had obviously come in and blown the ceiling paper. Carpet very shabby and bathroom described as "luxury" had plastic tumblers the kind you give to children on a picnic - and had seen better days too. All in all, very disappointing.

Food, although sounded exciting, was bland. Waiting 25 mins between courses (they had a party of 30 in apparently hence the wait).

Breakfast, either bog standard "English breakfast" sausages too hard, same wth blackpudding or you could order a kipper. Husband went for latter, but could have taken it home to line the dog's basket as it was so leathery.

At £80 for a double room per night was not good value for money at all. Mine host, although friendly enough, managed to cough practically all the way through us having breakfast. Perhaps he could have gone outside? Sorry, but we'll not be back.
