“Simply the best!”
Reviewed 4 July 2013

We booked this B & B on the strength of the other Trip Advisor comments and were not at all disappointed. Having travelled with friends to Appleby for the first time on the Settle-Carlisle railway, we were met at the station by our host David, who kindly took our overnight bags from us, then drove us to the start of our 8 mile walk! When we returned to Appleby later in the day (in pouring rain!) he once more collected us and took us to Bank End House. Both Jackie and David are wonderful hosts and go out of their way to provide everything needed by their guests - and more! The rooms are spacious, comfortable and spotless. The breakfast excellent, and the evening meal delicious (Jackie, how do you achieve such wonderful roast potatoes?!). The location is peaceful and quiet, though only one mile from Appleby and both Jackie and David are extremely knowledgeable about the local area, providing useful tips on where to eat, drink and walk. We would highly recommend this to anyone - and hopefully will be making a return visit ourselves!

We stayed in the Field room over the Spring Bank Holiday weekend. We were lucky with the weather and our choice of accommodation. Jackie and David are very welcoming hosts and made us feel totally at home.
The Field room is spacious and very comfortable, with good views out over the garden.
The breakfasts really set us up for each day’s walking. Having a choice of what we wanted was great and especially as much of it was local produce, freshly cooked.
Prior to arriving we had asked about pubs to eat and were recommended two, both very good choices and ones we would not have chosen without Jackie’s help. Helpful advice continued during the stay and enabled us make the most of Appleby and the Eden valley, which have such a lot to offer.

This really is a unique find. My flatmate and I work very stressful jobs with long hours and we really needed to get out of London. We needed somewhere where we could escape and Bank End was the perfect destination. Jackie and David are super hosts and very knowledgeable about the area (David is actually part of the local mountain rescue team) the rooms are cosy and warm, and the location is unbeatable. It was a weekend of fires, red wine, board games, long walks across the cliff tops, and lots of laughter. The local village of Appleby is definitely worth a visit too - pretty little boutiques and some amazing cafes. THANK YOU!!

We stayed at Bank End on a walking holiday in the North Pennines and had a lovely stay. The rooms are large, nicely decorated and clean. But more importantly, Jackie and David were extremely nice and helpful - suggesting walks and even giving us lifts to the start of the tracks. They are great hosts.

We returned to Bank End for the third time and were pleased to find the accomodation food and welcome were just as we remembered. One of the best B & B's we have ever stayed in.
We enjoyed a lovely big bedroom and comfy bed. I enjoyed reading the local magazines thoughtfully left in our bedroom. The view across the countryside is just as good in autumn. Their library room has enormous deep sofas. David and Jackie are very helpful guides to the area. We found a wonderful village pub thanks to them, and I enjoyed the Appleby village shops again.
I agree with the person who wrote in their visitor's book something on the lines of, "Bank End House is a good place to stop if you are travelling north, but also a destination in itself."

What more could you ask for? Fantastic house and location, large and beautifully decorated bedroom with a superby comfortable bed, and a great breakfast. David and Jackie are not only great hosts but also knowledgable guides to the local area. They even arranged good weather for us.

We have just had a second wonderful stay thanks to Jackie and David.
This time last year we stayed here when we were in the area for a wedding and this time, together with my son and his girlfriend, we returned for the 'honeymoon baby's' Christening.
The rooms remain immaculate and extremely comfortable and the welcome was just as warm. The breakfast was the same first class standard with an excellent menu choice. This time we chose to have the three course evening meal....what a good decision all four of us were able to thoroughly enjoy it since Jackie kindly prepared it gluten/wheat free to accomodate my son's girlfriend's special dietary needs. This took all of the usual dining out stress and anxiety away and whats more it was totally delicious, beautifully presented and we even had some home produced fruit and vegetables presented in an imaginative way.
Although we only stayed one night it was such a lovely relaxed and comfortable time we have come home feeling really refreshed. We cannot recommend staying here highly enough!

Room Tip: All of the rooms are excellent!
