“Good base to explore The Lake District”
Reviewed 27 April 2014 via mobile

A pleasant hotel with good communal area and nice bar with friendly staff. Room was clean. We ate one night in the hotel and it was fairly average to be fair. But all in all, a pleasant hotel well placed to explore parts of The Lake District. There are a lot of amazing places to visit nearby.

Great hotel in excellent location, we stayed two nights the food in this hotel is fabulous, they also have a very extensive wine list. staff are very friendly and helpful. Rooms are clean and comfortable. Would definitely recommend. In my opinion the only downside to this hotel is the lack of parking, and it would benefit from an outdoor seating area (even a couple of benches outside the restaurant).

Thank you very much for your kind review, I am glad that we helped you enjoy your Easter! Now that we have got into May our wine shop and cafe are open in the day times Monday to Saturday and the outside terrace that goes with this is full of flowers and open all the time for an outside drink or meal if you wish. In the daytime the cafe has a creperie and we have even started offering American Blueberry pancakes with Maple syrup! At lunchtimes we also offer dishes from our fish menus, so this week on a nice day we had customers eating bowls of mussels and chips al fresco accompanied by bottles of Muscadet!

Thank you once again

We only called in for a drink while walking, so my review can say nothing about the rooms, restaurant, etc. But as far as the decor., staff and drinks are concerned, it is excellent. It is a hotel style bar and most customers on this Sunday were dressed up, but we still got a good welcome. There are probably more suitable pubs in town for a group of walkers on a muddy day, but I for one will be looking for a chance to put a jacket on and go back again to The Tufton.

I have yet to visit/stay at Tufton Arms Hotel but intend doing so in May when undertaking some convalescence. I am impressed by the forthright manner adopted by the owner when responding to reviews. It is reassuring that someone Vis the owner is prepared to provide direct/unfettered replies to vaccuous gripes. All to often owners/managers 'accept' these kind of scurrilous 'accusations' for fear of reprisals on their business.

Thank you very much for your comments, I shall look forward to meeting you in May and helping you recover. Appleby and The Eden Valley as a whole is wonderful in the Spring and perhaps we can tempt you to a little fishing, walking, golf, sightseeing or whatever!

We weren't looking for looking for a pub meal, but there was a real lack of any sort of restaurants we could find in Appleby, the menu looked nice so we went in, the service was great, the food superb, really glad we went in

We have often stopped here for coffee or a lunch on trips to Scotland and back. The Hotel has a lovely old world charm with lovely staff and good food.
We needed to break our journey on this occasion and were happy to have the chance to stay at The Tufton Arms overnight.
I have to admit to being a little disappointed. Our room was spacious and trouble had been taken with the furnishings and decoration but it lacked the finish that other hotels are now aiming for. Basically clean, but no attention to detail, a few dangly cobwebs, net curtains that could have been fresher, but worst of all a bedspread. It was an attractive bedspread but made the room feel so outdated (never mind that it is unlikely to be washed between visitors) and underneath a blanket. I suppose that I am becoming finicky with age! Luckily the bathroom was very nice. The ‘clean but not shiny’ continued on the stair ways.
The bar areas had been updated since our last visit and had a nice mixture of local customers and hotel guests. We ate in the hotel that evening, and had a very nice meal and breakfast was excellent. I feel sorry that I am critical of the hotel rooms and would not want to put others off but some small changes would make a world of difference to a charming old world hotel.

Thank you very much for your review. Naturally I am glad that you appreciated the new look public areas and enjoyed the new fish menus along with breakfast. Your comments on the bedspreads have left me a little at a loss. As you say they look nice and give some warmth and depth to the room and I would say finish the room off. We have had all duvets in the past but kept getting customers wanting blankets and sheets, so decided to smarten the rooms up and go down that route. However we also get customes who must have duvets which we happily offer. Next time you are booking please just request for duvets and we will set the room up that way. Thank you once again for your review it is much appreciated

Comfortable rooms but the piece de resistance was the food; absolutely fantastic. We dined at the Midland the night before and, although it was OK, it was not a patch on the quality at the Tufton Arms. Portions not too big, ie you could see the plate under the food, and the food was cooked to perfection. Would love to go back.

Thank you very much for taking the time to review the hotel, it is much appreciated. I was very pleased to hear how much you enjoyed the food. We have changed the menus to be much more fish orientated and though we still offer a Grill menu with different meats on it was great to hear that the new menus and the changed public areas met with your approval. Thank you once again and we will look forward to you returning.
