My wife and I stayed two nights here last week arriving on a very wet Sunday afternoon we were disapionted that fires were not lit as this would have been very welcoming, however this was our only complaint. The grounds of the Hotel were immaculate and credit must be given to the garden staff, the situation was of concern to us being close to a major road but was not a problem, veiws at the back of the Hotel are stunning and we were not aware of any traffic noise.

The staff are professional and freindly, the Hotel is spotless, Huge comfortable bed in a well presented room.

The food here is fantastic perhaps a hungry walker could manage a little more but other wise of excelent choice and quality. For me the most important aspect was the speed of service between courses, just right.

Nice to have the spa facilities but as another reveiw has pointed out a little dated, but still very welcome after a long drive.

Its position is great to explore the lakes just far enough away from all the main resorts to be relaxed.

We had great time here would be happy to reccomend to anyone looking for a comfortable and relaxing break

We had a 2 night stay for my birthday weekend and frankly couldn't wish for more. The room was spacious & clean and the bed one of the comfiest iv slept in. The setting was beautiful & the hotel ambience very relaxing. Spa was a bonus & although a little dated very relaxing. Could maybe benefit from adding robes in the room? Staff were friendly, helpful & courteous. Food was excellent (although a wee bit expensive to eat in the restaurant both nights). Breakfast was excellent especially the crumpets :-0

Thoroughly enjoyable stay. Made my birthday really special. Thank you

Our 2 night stay was fantastic with excellent food and excellent service. Staff could not do enough for you.
We stayed on the first floor which was not helpful to me as I have walking problems but I managed. We will book a garden room next time.
The view from the garden and conservatory over the fells was great especially with the excellent weather we had during our stay and whilst eating our lovely afternoon teas.
We think the hotel is wonderful and are trying to go back in August
The Moneysupermarket voucher made it really good value

When we arrived, the receptionist gave us a tour of the facilities, and explained everything to us regarding meal times etc. If we wanted dinner in the hotel, we were asked to specify when we were going to eat as they had a large party in on both evenings we would be staying there. We then went up to our room.

When we booked, through a deal on Dealcloud, we were told that the only room left was at the top of the property, and that there was no view. This was definitely the case! We could see the roof and nothing else, but that didn't bother us as we knew we wouldn't be spending much time in the room anyway.

The room was very quiet, as few people passed it. As others have commented, it had a super king size bed made from two singles, so plenty of room, and a comfortable bed at that. There was also a walk-in wardrobe! The room could have accomodated around 6 people, with a futon under the main bed and a bed settee too, so truly a family room.

The bathroom was the cleanest I have ever used. No hint of stains on the grout. The only issue was the shower curtain, which smelt and as you had to put your hand round the shower to turn off the water flow (it had one of those mixer taps on the bath itself) you couldn't help but get water on the floor near the sink. The shower wasn't a power shower, just gravity fed, but it was adequate. The water was very hot, almost too hot sometimes, but that is a positive rather than a negative comment.

Continuing with the bathroom, the toilet didn't flush very well, and the fan was noisy too. Also the switch outside the bathroom turned off all the power to the bathroom, so you couldn't leave an electric toothbrush charging in the shaver point overnight, or go to the loo in the middle of the night and use the shaver light alone - you had to put the main light switch on. These last comments are minor quibbles in the grand scheme of things.

The curtains in the bedroom were not very effective, and didn't properly cover the window. And the old style TV didn't have very many channels to select from.

I now must turn to the food. We were thinking of having our second evening meal in the hotel and the first in Appleby itself, but couldn't really find anything in the town, so we booked both meals at the hotel. The food is absolutely fantastic! From the canapes you eat in the bar area before the meal itself, to the pre-starter of soup provided free of charge, all the way through the meal, it was wonderful.

I'm personally a pudding/dessert person rather than a starter person, so I didnt' have a starter and chose duck on the first evening and chicken on the second. My wife had the steak on the first evening, and I can't remember what she had second time around. We both thoroughly enjoyed the food. Presented beautifully, hot, not too much but enough. I would highly recommend it.

As for the puddings, well, I recommend the chocolate trio (I had it both evenings!) and my wife still raves about the lemon trio that she had. As you can gather, we enjoyed our meals in this hotel!

The breakfasts were similarly very good. There is a good choice of elements for your full English, which you order from the waiter after getting your own cereals and juice. The first breakfast was a lukewarm but the one on the second morning was piping hot.

The staff were very attentive but not overly so. The meal progressed at a good steady pace without feeling rushed. And as far as bar prices go, I don't feel that they are over priced for a 4 star hotel at all.

So in summary, would I recommend this hotel? Definitely, particularly if you can get a room on a deal like we did. Food excellent, quiet and comfortable rooms, first rate staff. Try it - I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Room Tip: Go for a room on the top floor of the main building (we were in room 14) if you're not bothered...

Just returned from a 2 night stay booked with a Groupon voucher, could not fault the hotel in any way. The food was excellent, we booked dinner on the first night and the food and service was top draw, as was the breakfast. The staff couldn't be more friendly and helpful, we will be going back later in the year.

Our two-night stay in Appleby was very enjoyable for a number of reasons, two of which were the superb quality food and excellent service in Appleby Manor. We were placed in one of the outbuildings, which was a bit disappointing as although the room was adequate it was also a bit characterless. The rest of our hotel experience was, however, very impressive. Our evening meal was outstanding, and the service throughout the hotel, both in the dining room and other areas, was very warm and welcoming. The hotel is about a mile outside Appleby; an easy walk there but a stiff uphill walk back. Appleby as a town is delightful, full of old world charm and in the middle of gorgeous countryside.

We recently stayed 2 nights at this perfectly positioned hotel. Expect excellent attention from the staff and you will not be disappointed! The views from all aspects are wonderful overlooking the gardens ans neighbouring countryside. Our Garden room had French doors opening onto the veranda, patio set for enjoying a leisurely cup of coffee. Large king size bed made from 2 singles was comfortable. Blackout curtains complemented a good nights sleep. Breakfast Could be taken in the large wood panelled lounge or the bright airy conservatory - we sampled both. Excellent choice of options - the Manor House of fluffy scrambled eeggs and smoked salmon was delightful. There is a small leisure suite with sauna, steam, jacuzzi and mini pool - don't expect to be able swim in the pool as not large enough but okay for a dip in between the sauna etc. board games available to while away the hours pleasantly after breakfast or returning from a day out. Close to upper lakes, Brougham Castle, Penrith and plenty of other tourist attractions. The Royal Oak pub is a 15 min walk into the village and definitely worth a visit for delicious steaks especially but the ambience is also worth a visit. Appleby train station is about 30 mins walk or 5 in the car and trips along the Settle Carlise railway can be enjoyed easily. Table tennis and pool were available at no extra cost in the games room. We enjoyed a lovely evening meal in the conservatory which was presented beautifully and served by staff with the perfect amount of attention. I probably would not have checked in on normal rates as could be deemed a little expensive but we found an offer on Groupon which included afternoon gingerbread tea, which was a lovely little treat. Rates are in line with other lake district hotels and the service was much better here than at some rivals so all in all an excellent hotel

Room Tip: Ask for a garden room for that little extra, will probably be a small charge
