Lovely hotel

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 15 Aug 2022via mobile
We stayed here for 2 nights in July on a gin spa break.
The receptionist was very nice as were all the staff we met.
We up graded our room, which was on the ground floor near the spa, & it was beautiful & well worth the extra. We had patio doors out to a large shared patio. With lovely views of the Eden valley, Appleby & the beautifully kept garden which was a pleasure to stroll round. The room was spotless & tastefully decorated & furnished. The bathroom looked new & had a big shower with a nice rain shower head.
With our deal we got one Bistro meal & one in the main restaurant. Both were excellent. Fantastic choice & presented & cooked well. Breakfast was nice too. We had a light lunch each day & the sandwiches were nicely presented.
We had a 2 hour slot in the Spa with our deal. It was spotlessly clean & had a lovely outdoor seating area. It was very relaxing & I loved the foot spa, among others.
The bar area was relaxing & had a nice outdoor seating area, which was well used.
The only gripe I have is that we were charged for tap water with our meals. This was not explained when we were asked if we would like it! On 2 occasions we asked for a glass of ice to take to our room & we were charged. Both the water & ice charges had vat added.
We really enjoyed our stay at this hotel & I would consider going again if we return to the area.
I would have give 5 stars but the water & ice charges changed my mind. Does seems to be very greedy.

Do not understand the negative reviews
    2nd Visit…

    Positives:

Great value if you book a deal that includes dinner and spa access…..we had the Gin Lakes Package
All staff very friendly and helpful, go out of their way to ensure you employ your stay.
One of the party was gluten free and was very…very..impressed by what was available and how clear it was to ensure food ordered was gluten free…
Rooms are not new but well maintained
    Hotel very clean
Spa experience great but book a package where it is included
    Great location

LOOK FORWARD TO OUR NEXT VISIT…..

    Negatives …all very minor…..

You do not know how much u r signing to your room, for example in the lounge
Dinner in the Main Restaurant was not as good as previous visit…perhaps the head chef was off on the day we dined…pigeon starter was over cooked as was the calves liver..the later sent back but replaced promptly…having said that all others enjoyed their food.
Watch out as not clear when booking but there is a 5% service charge on your bill before VAT on all charges…but it does go to the staff( we asked) so not an issue as no need to add to bills as you go.

Purchased on their spa break packages and stayed for a couple of nights. Our room faced the front and had great views. The room was not modern but that’s what we liked about it, it looked more traditional. It was however very clean which is the main thing. We found the restaurant and bar areas to be nice and again having a traditional feeling. The staff were very friendly. In particular the receptionist who greeted us and the gent who I presumed was the head waiter. The spa area was nice and we took full advantage of it. There were a few leaves lying about the hot tub (not in the water) but it was autumn….what more would you expect! Treatments were also great. We ate in the bistro and the main restaurant and found both to be good. Only comment I would make however is when I selected the cheeseboard I didn’t expect the accompanying butter to be a couple of foil wrapped ones I’d usually find in a roadside cafe. A minor issue but it’s the finer details that matter. Overall would be happy to recommend to others looking for a chilled couple of quiet days and good value for money.

Booked a 2 night with a girlfriend. It included a gin tour at the Lakes distillery, bed, breakfast and 2 evening meals. The staff are friendly (Martin - lovely, Kate - funny and friendly, Dave - super chirpy, friendly and, boy does that man know his cheese boards!)

Just checking out now after a relaxing 2 nights. Will definitely return

    Hello

I stayed for Friday night and we had dinner in the bistro.

Room..... decent size bed, room very dark and dated. Pillows... terrible.

Bathroom....the bath cast iron had patch where they had tried to fix it... shower head couldn't be altered...shower curtain was white once...bath dangerous no handrail and it's high.

Bar... typical hotel bar... however fairly good whiskey choice....we asked for a negroni...they didn't know what it was...

Also didn't like I heard on X3 occasion's the bar staff talking about us and our drink choices....very unprofessional. Whiskey no small water jug so I got a glass of water at £8 a shot I'd expect more.

Bistro.... the young lady who served us.... FANTASTIC.... food....ok so we are gluten free we were given an adapted menu ... standard pub food choices....food again was pub food standard.

Breakfast..... couldn't eat anything from the cold selection...no gluten free options, the fruit was uncovered and no utensil control....no gluten free cereal options....only yoghurt natural no soya or lactose free version....we had to have got. I had the cooked...1 bacon, tomato, mushroom and small sausage, poached egg.... husband had smoked haddock and poached egg. When the food arrived we joked it was a good job we weren't hungry!

Gluten free toast.... twice we were given normal toast. Eventually we got warm gluten free...2 small slices between us. Again glad I wasn't starving!!

We were showered, dresses, breakfast and out before 9:30am....

Really disappointing as this was my Christmas present....we normally go Spa hotels towards Windermere thought a change....we won't be back. I won't be recommending.

We stopped at the co-op in Appleby on the way home for drinks and breakfast.... never before have we had to do this.

Come on up your game....the COVID excuse isn't working now !

    Room tip: Go somewhere else
