“A wonderful escape”
Reviewed 19 August 2014

We have recently returned from a 3 night break at Moonfleet and had a really lovely time. We have 3 children 10,8 and 4, who all enjoyed the activities available on a daily basis. We all loved the swimming pools, tennis courts and the games room. We managed to spend all day in the hotel and the children were all happily entertained. The hotel itself is full of character and having read some of the other reviews, I think to call it tired is quite harsh. Yes it is obviously an old building but I would much rather stay somewhere with character and history than a brand new air conditioned hotel! When staying at Moonfleet you really feel that you can switch off from all distractions and spend quality time together as a family. We can't wait to return.

This hotel should close or halve their rates until massive renovation is completed. I felt like a fool paying so much money for rooms where closets are falling apart, bathrooms have not been touched in +10 years, rooms don't have A/C, etc. Food is actually good and some staff (not all) do their best. Never again.

Dear EugeneGregoire,

Further to your post on Tripadvisor, I am genuinely sorry to hear that you did not enjoy your stay with us this summer. The vague nature of your post makes it very difficult for me to comment, but I would be happy to discuss your stay further if you would like to contact me at the hotel.

We always welcome feedback as it helps us in our aim to continue to improve our products and services. Your post is in stark contrast to the great majority of reviews on Tripadvisor, but any customer dissatisfaction is a wake up call to review what we do.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if I can be of any further help.

Kind regards

Neil

We stayed in this hotel for two nights in august 2014 with our kids (6, 8 and 9). The hotel staff was very friendly and helpful and made sure our stay was pleasant. It is also true that there is a lot to do for the kids (pool, squash, snooker, climbing wall, ping-pong, bowling, tennis, etc.)

The hotel itself has a special atmosphere and lots of character. With its eclectic furniture and decorations it really stands out from other hotels.

However, we should mention some downsides to the hotel as well. Overall the buildings are old and in need of some changes (e.g. broken windows in the pool area, parts that appear to be repaired rather hastily, etc.).

Overall we thought the hotel was rather pricey. We paid 400£ per night + around 100£ for food and drinks, which totals to around 1000$ for two nights and that's in our opinion too much compared to other hotels.

Although the hotel was great for the kids and the staff was friendly it should offer more for that price. For once I thought the reviews on TripAdvisor did not really match the actual hotel.

Fourteen of us (including six children between 2 and six) descended on Moonfleet Manor for a family celebration at the end of July and we would not have done better.
We were very blessed with beautiful weather for three days but, even if it had rained, it would not have been a problem given the extensive indoor facilities provided for children of all ages - from 2 to 60 in our case!
Food and wine was excellent and the staff were extremely helpful and friendly at all times although there were one or two mix-ups and delays in food orders. However, we did have various dietary requirements which they accommodated with complete flexibility and even reset our dinner table (for eight adults) without question when we wanted to eat on the terrace - very impressive.
I should also mention the excellence of the baby monitoring service which enabled the parents of young children to enjoy their evening knowing that they would be alerted the minute there was any unrest.
As others have written - it might be a little difficult to justify the rating as a luxury hotel in the strictest sense. No aircon in the bedrooms (at least, not in ours, Fistral) meant the fans were struggling to cool the room down. Paintwork and furniture is faded in places, the plumbing was not quite up to the mark at times and there were some misallocations on the bills (again, this was possibly down to the complex makeup of our party). However, we hear there is a refurbishment due shortly which should iron out these wrinkles.
In the end, though, any minor imperfections can be forgiven - we didn't go to Moonfleet expecting the Ritz - it did exactly what we wanted and then some and, to echo another reviewer, in an age of bland hotel chains this is an absolutely stand-out option.
We have already made our first recommendation to another large family.
Thanks to everyone involved for providing the perfect atmosphere for our celebration!

Excellent family holiday. This hotel is in one of my favourite parts of our country. Lovely building, location and decor. The food was brilliant and so was the service from the brilliant staff.

Highly recommended for and visits to the beautiful Dorset coast.

This is a rather generous 4 stars, but I hope these types of hotels do flourish in an age of bland, hotel chains.
On entry this country hotel reminds me of a small English prep school or in the smarter rooms a Jack Wills store.
Moonfleet’s style is an eclectic assortment of unmatched, quirky old furniture. Old movie posters, tiger skis and faded photos of scenes from the Empire adorn the walls.

Moonfleet’s location is wonderful and it is recommended to take a walk along the coastline down to Rodden Hive bird sanctuary.

The hotel itself is far from luxurious and for the price the rooms should really be in a better condition. One big improvement for minimal investment would be for the hotel management to install a decent Wi-Fi (it was down for most of the time we were there and frustratingly slow when operational), especially helpful for overseas visitors to avoid data roaming charges.

We stayed two nights with our three kids (10, 8 and 5 years). The big plus is the kid’s friendly nature of the hotel. There is a large games room with table tennis, trampolines, pool tables and even a football pitch, which is very useful if you get unlucky with the weather.

There is an indoor pool area that is a bit rough around the edges, but the kids will be entertained.

The restaurant is pleasant with the option of a large outdoor area with stunning views down to the sea. The food was tasty, but I felt the menu was on the pricy side. The staff were friendly, although not exactly efficient. The High teas are great.

In summary this hotels oozes character and your kids should love it, but it could benefit from some investment in the décor and facilities.

Dear Rob T,

Many thanks for taking the time to post a review on Tripadvisor. I am glad to hear that you and your family enjoyed your stay with us.

We are in the middle of a rolling refurbishment programme, so please do keep an eye on our facebook page for updates. We start again in the Autumn and hope that we will make great progress by Christmas. I can assure you that we will not be bland!

Wifi is a much more difficult proposition, being located in a "not-spot" that BT do not have to attend to. At present we run off two satellite connections, which have an inevitable "lag" and do not offer guaranteed stability. We are working on other solutions, but are frustrated by BT's response times. We hope that we can improve this free service in the near future.

We look forward to welcoming you back to Moonfleet in the near future.

Kind regards

We stayed at Moonfleet for 3 nights in July. Our party was 6 adults and 4 children aged 7, 9, 10, 11. The hotel is probably the best family hotel I have ever stayed at, certainly in the UK, with endless games and facilities for the kids to play with and meet other kids. The games room in particular is inspired as its safe and fun for the kids to just go into and play for hours. As parents, the set up at Moonfleet gave us a real break whilst everyone had fun. What is unusual is that the hotel will work as well when the weather is not good as much of the children's entertainment is indoors.

Rooms were excellent and well appointed. We stayed in Trenchard which had a separate bedroom for kids. Highly recommend this hotel

Room Tip: Some of the suites have separate rooms for kids so ask for this if its important for you
