Starting near the beginning of Abbotsbury Road the route follows the old railway line to Portland. With the new footbridge it is now a continuous walking trail. Plenty of views of the town unavailable anywhere else. Lots of birdsong at the right time of the year. Many of the old halts and platforms still exist and add a certain something to the walk. A copy of a history of the line would be useful on the walk to learn about the various parts of the route. Sandsfoot Castle is near the Portland end of the walk and has a cafe with reviving beverages! Also toilets. The end is near the Ferrybridge Inn and there is a convenient bus stop back into town. There is also an excellent fish restaurant nearby.

This trail is along an old railway line so is very flat and an easy walk. It runs parallel with the sea front. You have a good view of portland island and pass various places of interest including gun emplacements, old station platforms, and the old torpedo factory etc. Plenty of wild life can also be seen on the way.

First saw it reviewed on the television on the Railway walks by Julia Bradbury. Walked it for a days rest from the South West Coastal Path. Just perfect for a rest and keeping the old limbs warm.

Very enjoyable and easy walk, you must also do the walk around The Bill of Portland, end in the right place and have a drink in The Eight Kings pub.

I walk this every day & love hearing the birds singing, watch out for the speeding bikes if you've got children or dogs most don't slow down..at night theres foxes and badgers.. I wouldn't go down there at night on your own as theres horrible people about.
