80 year old mother, 1 year old niece, myself & sister all contracted the noro virus whilst staying in this hotel 1/8/2011. The receptionists moved us around from room to room, continually harrasssing us to move, by phoning the room all morning etc etc. All we wanted to do was leave. The hotel should have been shut down, but they were continually booking people in all week. Our 1st room, which was an absolutely disgusting health hazzard when we left it - had a little old lady sitting in the window the very next day. Totally shameful. Any apologies? Any recompense? £25 pp vouchers to be spent on the next holiday there!!!!! Shame on everyone who had a hand in the total mishandling of this epidemic - we were lucky to escape with our lives (all were very ill for the entire month afterwards).

Room Tip: Avoid at all costs - if you value your health

I am so sorry to hear of your experience. Unfortunately our hotel among with many others in the area was affected by NoroVirus. During this time we worked extremely closely with our local Environmental Health department, who advised us and guided us on the necessary steps to take. Follow their advice and maintaining strict hygiene standards we managed to control the virus fairly quickly.

We Booked with a Ramblers Group for a 5 day walking holiday. and the general impression of the group was very good value. none of us had any real issues apart that in some cases the rooms at the back of the hotel were a bit cramped and needed the make over the public areas of the hotel had. The food was to reasonably good standard and very edible. The only issue here was that at some tables the service could be quite drawn out, but at others very efficient tables near the windows seemed to get the better deal. But this could be just a staffing issue with certain waitresses and not ongoing.
Overall the experience was very good and we would certainly recommend and visit again

Room Tip: An upgrade of room would be good option for some customers

My partner and myself along with my partners father visited this hotel for the first time although not our first stay with this holiday group .Over all we thought the hotel very good although the lack of entertainment during the weekend was disappointing .It would appear that this hotel has received a face lift which was very pleasant .The position of the hotel is excellent and very convenient for all facilities along Weymouth`s front. We were also lucky that the weather was very good and sunny .Meals were very reasonable and the service quick.
All in all good value for the price we paid which we really think other travellers some times forget. we would certainly visit again.

I am so happy that you found your stay to be good value and were happy with the location. We are extremely lucky to be situated with such beautiful sea views and in such a convenient location, We do provide entertainment over the weekend, however not every night. We have done this as many guests prefer to spend the evening at their own leisure, some like to take an evening stroll after dinner along the Esplanade or may chose to relax in the bar with an after dinner drink with a view of the beach. I am pleased that you also enjoyed the food, we work closely with our Chefs to ensure excellent standards are delivered. We look forward to seeing you again.

This hotel is overpriced, the room we had (401) was cramped and in need of redecoration. The bathroom was extremely small with water trickling from the taps and shower. The food was OK but not as expected. The only thing in it's favour was it's superb location....

We visited the local Shearings office on the 10th Aug because of our concerns about Nora Virus, they insisted that there had only been two cases, but from their shop we phoned the head office and spoke to an assistant who confirmed that in fact their had been 12 cases the week before and a further 2 so far this week. (Lynn at head office)

We asked to cancel which was refused but an offer was made that we could transfer to another holiday, but we would not get any money back if the holiday was less, it turned out that the alternative was over £300 less and any refund was refused so we decided to go to Weymouth as booked on the 13th Aug for 8 days at the Royal Hotel.

Sunday night I became very ill (latter told likely Nora Virus) in the morning we spoke to Reception and asked for a Doctor, they were against calling out a GP, so we said we would get a taxi to the local Surgery, again they were against this also, it seemed that they did not want the local GP informed, so a taxi was obtained to the local NHS Walk in Centre who turned out to be wonderful and could not have been more helpful. However it took a full week to be almost recovered, and by which time my wife became ill also but managed the journey home.

We were given a nice room as expected as we had paid for a superior room, but the ventilation to the bathroom did not work and by the end of the week the smell was pretty bad, there seemed little point in complaining as I heard someone else making a similar complaint about a smell and just being fogged off. The windows in the room used to drip with condensation if we had a shower.

We had a balcony which came with the £210 extra for the superior room however this flooded when it rained due to the outlet being full of soil and mature weeds together with the heap of cigarette tabs which were never swept up, not nice.

The reception was newly decorated and looked nice but this was spoilt by the amazingly small wattage lamps making it impossible to read in the sitting area provided, the carpet on the stairs leading off was well past its use full life, and worn badly on the nosing’s.

One thing that I noted as very bad was the large piece of stone missing from one of the entrance steps (should make a nice claim for injury in the future when some one injures them selves on it.) but not to badly I hope.

Now as to security, this seems non existent with regard to the room keys, and therefore the holiday maker’s possessions, when you go out you are required to place your room key on a table next to reception, everybody does this, and when you come back you help yourself to your key (and anybody else’s if you are inclined to rob their room.) On one occasion I asked for my key at reception and was told that I should know where it was by now.

I will not be going back.

Room Tip: If there is a problem tell the staff and make a note of who you told

I am very sorry to hear that you fell ill during your stay, your health is of extreme importance and if a guest requests that a doctor be called then we will ALWAYS ring one. However it is for the Doctor to decide if a visit is necessary and not ourselves. During this outbreak we had full liaison with our local environmental health department who monitored and approved our practices. We managed to control the spread of the virus extremely quickly. We are pleased that you were happy with the new décor in the Hotel.

Stayed here with family and friends. My friends room was on the 4th floor. Her shower was more like a dribble. She spoke to the 'Manageress' who quite bluntly told her that it was a water pressure problem and that there was nothing that could be done....So she had to use my room on the 2nd floor to have a shower. Not ideal atall. We later discovered that a couple of other guests also had the same problem and were told the same thing. How she can justify this sort of query with that attitude I do not know. And unfortunately the attitude from her did not change throughout our stay. Quite an abrupt woman.

Evening meal is in 15 minute sittings. Food is OK, but sometimes found the plates hotter than the food. Some of the dining room staff were a little rude, but Rowena the Dining Room Manager did a superb job in there. My only complaint is that the coffee at the end of the meal is self service in plastic thermos flasks. Perhaps coffee machines would be more appropriate, ensuring the coffee was always hot. Breakfast was great with the exception of the milk for the cereasls not being chilled. The yogurts were not chilled either. Perhaps not the best thing in a very warm dining room?

The bar was a nice area to sit in, comfortable and clean. However we felt that the drinks were a little over priced, but I suppose you pay for the location. Bar staff were very friendly especially Trevor. Bar Manager is a rather large and scary looking man, but service was ok.

The reception area is quite dark and dreary, although we were informed that it had recently undergone a refurbishment. More lightning defineately needed in there. Impossible to read a newspaper or book unless you are sat right underneath one of the floor lamps. You can order daily newspapers via reception. Thank you Sadie for organising our theatre tickets and helping us with other queries. A very helpful lady. On some occasions there seamed to be quite a nasty smell near the 'old lift'. coming from some stairs that went down to private doors. But this seemed to come and go.

The house keeping team were always very friendly and any requests were always seen to very quickly.

I would say that some areas of the the hotel needs to possibly be addressed. The corridors to the bedrooms are clearly in need of a helping hand. Wall paper haning away from the walls and the paint work very very tired. Window sills near the 'old lift; in need of repair. The woodwork clearly warped and bent. The carpet on the stairs is quite tatty and worn in places. The carpet near the lift in the dining toom around the surround very dusty and our bedroom windows could certainly have done with a clean.

However we did enjoy our stay, but I feel that Shearings should possibly send in some 'secret guests' to see for themselves the points raised by myself and other Trip Advisor reviewers regarding issues with this hotel. ie Cleanliness and Managerial attitude to both guests and staff.

Thank You for your kind comments regarding Rowena, Sadie and Trevor, we have passed these on to them. I am also pleased that you found the breakfast great. The hotel has gone a successful refurbishment which our new and regular customers are very pleased with. We have not refurbished the whole hotel in one go to ensure maximum comfort for guests. However we are working to ensure the image of the hotel continues to improve in both public areas and bedrooms. Should you stay with us again we hope you would benefit from this.
