Description: A pub for more than 400 years, The Swan and Talbot in Wetherby was once a posting inn on the Great North Road. Originally named the Dog and Swan, the pub was, until 1611, allowed to bear the coat of arms of the Swann family who lived at Askham Manor in nearby Askham Richard. The 'dog' was a talbot hound - an extinct type of hunting dog whose closest modern day descendant is the beagle - and the pub's name was changed to The Swan and Talbot. The pub and letting accommodation has recently seen extensive refurbishment and is proving to be a popular haunt for many of Wetherby's locals and destination diners. Inside, the pub has low ceilings befitting the age of the place, and at one end, a huge fireplace over which hangs a brief history of how it acquired its name.

“Disappointing”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 July 2014

Wednesday night offer - 2 dine for £20 - 2 mains with either 2 starters or desserts and 2 glasses of house wine as per website. The reality is 2 mains only & 2 glasses of wine. Reason given for the change - our supplier has increased the price so we have had to reduce the amount of food served in the offer!!!! We visited on Wed 16th July - the offer menu was very limited which included 2 chicken dishes but had no fish option. As regular customers we were very disappointed with the whole experience and sorry to say will not be returning.

“Friendly service and tasty food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 July 2014

We popped in to this pub for a quick evening meal yesterday before a long journey home. The pub was busy and the bar man informed us they were one staff member down but was still able to accommodate us. Service was not fast but at all times the waitress who was very stretched with her work was pleasant and made sure everyone was being looked after as best as she could. The meals were bought out presented lovely and very tasty. A lovely atmosphere and wished we could have stayed for the evening instead of a 3 hour drive!
I would definately return...thank you

“A welcome break on a busy day!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 July 2014

We called into the Swan on a very busy Sunday, a Food Festival and Farmers Market both being held in Wetherby. The restaurant was full but we managed to find a table in the bar area. A selection of real ales was well kept and the wines were nicely chilled and from the bottle. We did not require a full Sunday Lunch but there was also a sandwich menu with both hot and cold sandwiches. We opted for the Tuna Crunch in both white and wholemeal bloomers. The sandwiches were large, tasty and fresh and were accompanied by a small, well dressed salad. There is a selection of menus and offers throughout the week and we will return to this friendly pub.

“Disappointed Twice in two days !!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 July 2014

First day whilst staying in Wetherby for a couple of nights we called in for a sandwich. I had a tiger prawn and marie rose sandwich which was quite tasteless but pricey. Nevertheless we decided to go back the following evening for my birthday celebration meal - what a mistake that was. First we asked for a bottle of champagne - they obviously dont get asked that very often. The bottle was brought, already open, and in a bucket of water with a few ice cubes floating and about it was WARM!! We sent it back, the "manager" who was very young and probably quite inexperienced apologised and we agreed to have the bottle chilled properly and to reduce the price but that was a very disappointing start. I ordered salmon with a pesto crust which was supposed to come with some sort of lemony rice which all sounded very nice. the reality was the the pesto crust was like a rock, the salmon was OK but very dry because the crust had lost all moisture and the rice was a also dry as a bone. I asked for some sort of sauce to rescue the dish which came but was bland and disappointing. Oh dear, a very poor birthday experience. Two chances to impress and did exactly the opposite on both. Dont Go would be my advice!
