“The Sanctuary is Unbelievable”
Reviewed 20 September 2009

We have just stayed in The Cranleighs new room the Sanctuary. Wow it is incredible. We have stayed in boutique hotels all over the world and this is right up there with the best of them. The bathroom is mind blowing and is the best I have ever seen never mind stayed in. We have paid £1000 + a night in London for a room and got nothing like the facilities this room has. Breakfast in bed is always a treat and the hot tub is awesome. If you are looking to treat someone or you are having a special occasion then book this room and I guarantee your partner will be mind blown. We can’t wait to return to this room. Great location, friendly staff, great breakfast and the room was just the best. You have to give this a try..

This hotel is a little gem. The room was wonderful with a stunning bathroom. The staff were very helpful and nothing was too much trouble. I was a little concerned after reading about the waiting at breakfast but the breakfast was one of the best we have had and to be honest anyone who complains about waiting is a Victor Meldrew with nothing else to moan about. There is a lovely lounge to relax in while awaiting your breakfast. This hotel is in a brilliant location for all of Lake Windermere and we didn't need to use our car once. The steamers are just a few minutes walk and there are some wonderful restaurants just minutes away too. I would definitely recommend this hotel to any friends or family.

I want to write a fair review of the Cranleigh so I'll start by saying this is not a hotel. But the owners don't claim it is. It's a wonderful 5* Guest House. And I'd definitely recommend you visit. We stayed in Room 4. I especially liked the fact you can view your actual room on the website so you know exactly what you are booking. I would only add that Room 4 is slightly smaller than it appears in the pictures, but that didn't matter really.
I loved the complimentary water, and the free internet connection, and the free hire of over 200 dvd's. Little things really do make a difference. I've stayed in five star hotels and they don't offer these services. The breakfast is fantastic, my only comment is that they should extend the breakfast hour to a longer time slot. This is simply because there are not enough tables to seat every room, and trying to sit 17 rooms in one hour seems to be difficult. We had to wait in the lounge (which is very nice), for a table to clear and I personally felt a bit uncomfortable with this. It may not bother others however. And it shouldn't put you off going down, breakfast is well worth it. It is a two minute walk down to the lake, and the Cranleigh is in a really good position. Our room was very quiet and we would barely have known anyone else was in the house along with us. We did hear noise from the road outside and the car park but this was not at night, and didn't disturb us at all. The female staff on reception and in the breakfast room were all lovely. If you are looking for a fantastically decorated, well appointed, clean guest house to stay in then this is definitely worth a visit. Sometimes it really is worth paying a little bit more to get what you want.

Thank you for your comments. The extras we provide our guests are all for free including the internet. Most hotels and guesthouses charge for such services. We have taken your comments on board re breakfast and have now extended breakfast time. Now from 8.30am - 10am and extended checkout to 11am which is at least half an hour later than almost all guesthouses in the area. Thank you and please visit us again soon.

Stayed at the Cranleigh for two nights, the guest house is in an excellent location, literally two minute walk and you are down in Bowness, great for getting back after a night in the pub! Our room was not in the main guest house but the building next door which was not a problem at all, you just have to nip outside and next door for breakfast. The room was spotlessly clean and very well appointed, only slight niggle was it was maybe slightly smaller than we were expecting having looked at the photos online but other than that, the photos on the website are exactly representative of what the rooms are really like. Bathroom was stunning with over bath rain shower, spa bath and television and very funky taps!

Breakfast was a bit of disappointment however. On our first morning we sat for at least 5 minutes before any staff acknowledged us or offered coffee/tea/toast or told us to help ourselves to the buffet. Service was slow, I guess they are cooking everything to order one table at a time, but admittedly when it arrived, the cooked breakfast was good. I was tempted by the Eggs Benedict on the menu but put off by the Parma Ham, this is not how Eggs Benedict should be served!

On the second morning, we had to wait in the lounge until a table became available as they have more rooms than tables available in the dining room which was fine but again, service was disappointingly slow. I had to ask a waitress to fill up the orange juice jug on the buffet table which had gone empty and this should not happen in a 5 star establishment, they should be on top of things like that. Overall, the young staff are friendly enough, just a little inexperienced and under trained. With 17 rooms in the guest house and therefore around 35 diners for breakfast, the breakfast operation needs someone in charge front of house to take control.

Overall, a very nice guest nice which has obviously had a lot of money spent on it, rooms are spotlessly clean, modern and well appointed but the breakfast service needs work, and at £145 per night, I would not say the Cranleigh is especially good value for money, however nicely it has been refurbished. There are clean rooms and better breakfasts for half the price in Bowness!

Thank you for you review. I have found this review a little difficult to respond to as it is a little contradictive. You seem to have enjoyed all the facilities we offer and have noticed the very high standard of the bathrooms and rooms, how clean we keep the property, you even comment on the quality of our cooked to order breakfasts. Then at the end you say that you can get the same quality for half the price in the area. I would be really interested in knowing where you can find a room with an air spa bath, TV in the bathroom, Ben Di Lisi pot ware, under floor heating etc also 40" TV in the bedroom, DVD player, King size beds etc in the country never mind the Lake District for £70.00 per night. Eggs Benedict can be served with Parma Ham or Smoked Salmon. If you do not like parma ham why did you not order Eggs Benedict without Parma Ham?
Your comments on the staff and efficiency have been taken on board and we will introduce more training in this area thank you.

We stayed at the cranleigh for 1 night in August and got a late deal on their website for Room 8. We thought that the website was brilliant as each room had a number of pictures and these reflected the room perfectly.

The room did not disappoint when we arrived as the decor was gorgeous and the bed was massive and really comfy. The location within Bowness is brilliant as you are only a two minute walk from a number of bars and restaurants and a 5 min walk from the lake side.

The only slight downside to the room was that room 9 next door had a spa bath and the couple in there decided to use it at half 11 at night and you could clearly hear this through the wall.

We will definitely stay here again and would love to be able to afford room 17 or 18 next visit!

a suprise anniversary break . the cranleigh was nicely decorated ,clean and very central. the staff were very polite and attentitive. the extras of flowers a teddy bear and rose petals offer a nice touch. the owners offered assistance in places to visit , overall a fabulous place although not cheap we would definatley recommend . the breakfast was nicely presented with lots of choice. Even though there is no bar facilities alcohol can still be purchased and consumed in the lounge or the comfort of your room.

We have just returned from a three night break at this fantastic hotel. It was exactly as described on the website and is approximately 200metres from the town centre of Bowness. The room we stayed in (room 4) was of a very high standard and the bathroom was simply stunning. The breakfast was of a very high quality and the staff extremely friendly and helpful. On arrival, the hotel owner gave us a map complete with a list of recommended pubs and restaurants. We made good use of this during our stay. If you do visit Bowness, ensure you try Villa Positano.........truly excellent food and service.

As for the negative comments we have seen on this site, these people must have had another agenda. Our stay was great, the people friendly, location superb and it really did exceed our expectations. We will most certainly return.
