“Excellent for a special occasion”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 May 2010

We stayed at The Cranleigh for 2 nights to celebrate our 1st Wedding Anniversary and we really enjoyed our stay. Excellent location - walking distance to town for restaurants/shops and boats across the Lake. Rooms were lovely - nice size, bathroom fab. Breakfast was excellent - a choice of hot breakfasts and cereals/toast etc.. Can use the pool/spa at local hotel although this is a 10 minute walk, very nice though. Would recommend hotel for treat as not the cheapest.

Thank You very much for your excellent review. The Spa facilities are located 350 yards away from The Cranleigh which is a 3 -4 minute walk at the most unless you take a stole down by the edge of the lake on your way there. You will find a Hi Tech Gym, large indoor luxury pool, sauna, steam room and first class spa treatments and pamper days. Your right that we are not a cheep Guesthouse. Our room prices range from £82.00 - £345.00 per night depending on the room or suite you require. To keep up 5 star gold standards and provide all our customers with the highest of standards at all times takes a lot of time, thought and care. We always aim to please and take pride in what we do at all times. All our luxury rooms and suites come with facilities way beyond the norm including air spa baths, TV's in the bathrooms, tiled bathroom floors with underfloor heating, Large TV's in the bedroom with DVD players, Ipod docking stations and free access to a large DVD library. The rooms all have bathrobes, luxury towels, accessories, luxury bedding and much much more.

Thank You again for your review and we hope to see you again soon. Why not try the Sanctuary next time you stay with us.

Stayed at The Cranleigh last night with my partner. We stayed in 'The Sanctuary' room. It was perfect. A separate little bungalow at rear of hotel decorated to very high standard- much like the hotel as a whole. The biggest bed i've ever seen, massive tv, surround sound and all other hi-tech things that the boys love! My fella was in his element with all the remotes!! Well stocked mini bar. Bathroom was fantastic and spotless- top marks to the cleaners. Outside was an enclosed courtyard area with hot-tub- perfect!! We even had breakfast brought to our room. The staff were very friendly. Couldn't ask for more-appart from a lake view maybe but i'd rather have better quality accomodation and its only a short walk to the lake (5mins max). Bowness shops are literally 2mins walk away. You can stay here and never use your car (and save a fortune on parking!!) Will definately revisit and recommend to friends.

Having just returned from a one night stay in The Sanctuary, at The Cranleigh I must comment on the excellent standard of this room. We managed to secure a one night stay and I would always recommend calling to see if they have availability. The Sanctuary is a seperate block to the rear of the hotel. It is in reality a mini suite, with all mod cons, inclusing an outdoor hot tub. A privacy screen surrounds the hot tub and a large parasol can be placed over it, in case of bad weather. Breakfast was served in the room and was spot on. For those special occasions or even just a bit of pampering, I cannot recommend The Sanctuary enough. We even had a tour of some of the other rooms which are all finished to a high standard. The hotel is immediately to the rear of The Belsfield and is literaly 2 minutes stroll from the heart of Bowness.

Dear Guests. Thank you very much for your review on the Sanctuary. We believe it to be the perfect suite for a romantic get away or mini honeymoon. We have achieved a 5 star Gold from Visit Britain and a 5 star Highly Commended from the AA. This makes The Cranleigh the highest graded Guesthouse in Bowness on Windermere. We are pleased to hear
that you found the standard of all our rooms to be very high and we hope you stay with us again soon. Thank you again.

This is not a hotel, but a guesthouse / B&B - which wasn't immediately clear at the time of booking. If you consider the Cranleigh to be a good quality (if somewhat overpriced) guest house / B&B, then you won't be dissapointed. The breakfast was cooked to order, and was very good.

Unfortunaetly, for the price I paid (£125 per night for a 'luxury' room), I had reasonably high expectations. Our room was nice, clean and of good quality, but it was extremely small. I think for £75 a night this would be a recommended place to stay in Bowness, but for £125+ there are better alternatives. Most of the pictures you see on the bookings.com site and also the guest house's own website are of their two suites, which are very much more expensive than a normal room. The leisure facilities are located at the nearby Macdonald hotel (a good 5 minute walk away), which would be my preference for a future visit.

Thank you for your feedback, however It would not be fair unless I pointed out to you the following. You obviously booked a luxury room through Bookings.Com. May I suggest that you go back to Bookings.Com and read through the customer information which clearly points out that we are a 5 star guesthouse. It is very difficult when people use third party booking sites as 1. the customer is paying commission and 2. the hotels/guesthouses are restricted to the information that they are allowed to put on these booking sites. I would always recommend booking direct with the establishment directly as you will save money. In relation to your comments on the standard of the room, for £75 per night you will find a 3/4 star guesthouse in the area. The Old England Hotels rooms range from £170 per night to £400 per night. Our luxury rooms come with air spa baths, tv in bathroom, underfloor heating, quality towels and bathrobes. Each bathroom is individually designed using Villeroy & Boch or Ben de Lisi fittings and potware. In other words, the facilities that we offer for £125 per night far exceed what all large hotels offer in the immediate area and I can assure you that you will not find this standard of accommodation in Cumbria for £125 per night. If you look at our website we have a section on the top of our home page which clearly says rooms. If you click on this you will be able to see all of our 18 rooms in detail with detailed descriptions of what each room comes with. You've obviously looked at our website but chose to book through a third party booking platform where it does not give the customer control to choose which room you would want to stay in. It is rare in this country to find a guesthouse that shows you exactly what you are booking. We have tried extremely hard to make sure our customers are fully aware of what they are booking etc. Our location is far superior to most guesthouses and hotels in the area and we provide customers car parking which again is difficult to find in this area. We have just been graded 5 star gold by Visit Britain and are therefore the highest graded guesthouse in Bowness-on-Windermere.

we've just returned from a one night stay at the cranleigh, and had originally booked to stay in the hideaway. Upon arrival we were offered an upgrade to the sanctuary - and we accepted much to our delight! we have recently got married and honeymooned in egypt, but it wasn't a patch on this single night at the cranleigh - it felt like we should have gone there instead. excellent service, staff and surroundings! you won't be dissapointed if you stay here. breakfast is fabulous also!!!

We did not initially have a smooth start to our stay as we had to cancel and change our booked dates due to volcano ash flight cancellations. However we appreciated that Tony came back to us promptly on re-letting the cancelled rooms and refunding our money which was a nice surprise after the stress of the cancelled flights. He also kindly upgraded our rooms for our new stay date.

We found the location to be really convenient and the rooms surpassed our expectations, especially the bathrooms with the bath and attached TV which was great. This is a really good choice for guests who like new modern rooms with reasonable rates. I'd definitely recommend the Cranleigh to friends who are visiting the Lake District!

Thank you for taking the time to write your comments on The Cranleigh. The volcano has caused so much inconvenience therefore we thought it only appropriate to upgrade you on your arrival. We always try to exceed expectations were we can. Thank you.

After a nightmare journey with our car, the Cranleigh was exactly what we needed. The owners could not do enough for us and treated us exceptionally throughout our whole stay.

The room was immaculate and the quality of the fittings was clear to see. The bed comfortable, the furniture neat but plentiful and the ensuite shower room perfect with an great powerful and hot shower (we stayed in room 3).

Breakfast was just as good as was the complimentary tea and coffee on arrival and the service excellent from all the staff we encountered.

All in all, not a bad thing to say about anything at all. The only reason we haven't given the room/sleep quality a 5 out of 5 was because the room was a little on the warm side and we couldn't open the window, but we were so exhausted we didn't really notice once we were out for the count...!

Thank you for your amazing review. The Sanctuary is becoming very popular for newly weds due to the fact that it is away from the main hotel, very peaceful and very private. It is a perfect place to completely relax and unwind in totally luxury surroundings. Please visit us again soon and recommend us to your family and friends. Also we sell gift vouchers so that you can gift The Cranleigh experience to someone you care for.
