Well... recently returned from a 2 night weekend break at Hawkrigg - and can honestly say we have had a lovely time! We had no problem finding it - it is very close to the west Windermere ferry terminal, and the building stands high on a hill overlooking the Lake.

We stayed in Room 2 - it had dual aspect windows and a stunning view over Lake Windermere. The room and bathroom were immaculately clean, the bed was very comfortable with excellent quality bedding and the decor was really nice. We had a small but perfectly appointed en-suite shower room with a brilliant shower!

The breakfast was excellent - everything was cooked perfectly, and we had the nicest cup of coffee I think we have ever had in a hotel! The owners were very friendly - they would go out of their way to help you with anything - but they also weren't too invasive and didn't loiter around you like some guest house owners tend to do. They had the perfect balance between being a reassuring presence but not being "in your face" and this allowed us perfect privacy throughout our entire stay!

We have stayed at many places around the Lakes - hotels, b&bs and cottages and we can honestly say that Hawkrigg has been our favourite and we plan to return with family so that they can enjoy the experience that we had as well! Thank you!

-Oh, and we had dinner at the nearby Cuckoo Brow Inn one night which we thought was pretty special so we'd recommend eating there. I think they have a guest house also but looking on their website they don't look half as nice as the room we had at Hawkrigg!

Room Tip: Room 2 had an en-suite bathroom and stunning lake views!

Mike and I were visiting the U.K. this past August from what is now our home in sunny San Diego, California. We were here to see family and friends both north and south of the border.(Mike, my husband, is from Perth, Scotland and I am from Sunderland, England).
Even the damp weather could not spoil our stay at this delightful B & B. Our room looked out over a couple of fields all the way down to Lake Windermere. Although it was cool and it rained a little, our room was warm and very comfortable with plenty of towels and lots of hot water. A nice plus was that Mike was able to sit out in the lovely garden to enjoy his glass of wine and cigar, albeit inbetween showers!
As every one says, the cooked breakfast was really good, nothing pleases Mike more than a good British breakfast - something he doesn't get that often at home. There were also lots of choices if a 1000 calorie meal wasn't your way to start the day.
The family who own the place are very friendly and attentive to detail, making sure we had everthing we needed.
If we are ever in this part of the world again, this will always be our choice of a place to stay.

We have just come back from a lovely overnight stay at Hawkrigg. It is in a really beautiful spot, and the view of the lake from room 1 is fantastic. Our room was comfy and clean, I could have gazed out of the window for hours! Breakfast was excellent, we had a great time. Personally, we didn't have a problem with Emma not being in when we arrived - our key was left out and that was fine. We met Emma and her step mum the next day and both were friendly and helpful. This is a lovely family-owned b&b in a really peaceful and beautiful part of the Lakes.

Room Tip: Room 1 has a lovely lake view.

My husband and I spent a Friday and Saturday night at Hawkrigg Guest House as a "mini honey moon". We booked the room the day before and got the last one available which was the four poster room with the lake views.

The rooms are clean and spacious enough and the view of the lake from this room truly makes the room!

No bath, only walk-in shower, but this was not a problem for us at all.

Greeted by the owner on arrival and shown to our room, unfortunately there was a problem with the plumbing so the toilet would not flush. They said that the plumber had promised to be there earlier but was very late. They let us use the bathroom in room number 2 which was fine by us, and I got to see this room also. OK, so the bed does not face the window in this room, but it looked lovely nontheless.

I would have liked Emma, the owner to have given us a bit more information about what to do and where to go, especially as she seemed to be aged the same as my husband and I (we are 33 and 31 respectively), but her introduction was rather brief in my opinion. I don't know whether everyone gets seen on check in, as a couple of times we saw a room key with a "Sorry we are out but welcome to our hotel" note left by the entrance door.

On a very plus point, Emma and her partner gave us a lift from the ferry on Saturday night back to the guest house which was a blessing as we would have otherwise had a walk up hill of almost a mile in the pitch black (we were in the Lake District for relaxation, not walking!). That was kind and very appreciated.

The breakfast was very fresh and absolutely perfect. This was served by Emma's mother on both days and she was an absolutely lovely lady who enjoyed chatting to all the guests.

Finally, enjoyed having a glass of wine in their garden area which is furnished with wooden benches, and also has a children's play area. This was a great facility as far as we were concerned.

All in all, I would recommend this guest house if you want to be away from the main towns for the peace and quiet, but still close enough to get there easily. It was peace and quiet and relaxation that we were after, and we got just that. I would stay again.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 1 which had the four poster bed (a modern one, not the old, carved style) and the...

We stayed here in early August and were not disappointed! Having stayed in many b&b's, this was one of the best.
We stayed in the four poster room with fabulous views of Lake Windermere.
The owner, Emma was extremely friendly, with nothing being too much trouble.
The breakfast was freshly cooked and excellent.
Would definitely recommend and are looking forward to staying there again in the future.

Room Tip: Fabulous views from the 'Four poster room'

I couldn't fault Hawkrigg Guest House. the location is a short walk to the ferry and was clean, bright and peaceful. My husband, myself and our dog were made very welcome and our room (1) was comfortable and kept spotless despite the dog :0). Tea, coffee and biscuits supplied daily in our room and an immense breakfast of cereal, fruit, toast and full English if you can manage it with fruit juice and tea or coffee. The local pub (Cuckoo Brow Inn) is a few minutes walk and serves lovely food (dogs welcome) we went there a few times. All in all a fantastic break. Many thanks to Emma and family for a lovely stay.
