“Tired Old Lady in need of TLC”
Reviewed 12 December 2012

Having stayed at the Belsfield many years ago for our Honeymoon it was with with great expectations and rose - coloured memories that we returned as an anniversary treat.

The title of this review sums the experience up.

The hotel screamed "tired " and in need of refurbishment. Our room was at the rear of the premises overlooking an enclosed courtyard and staff quarters - not a good start.

The room was quite spacious, immaculately clean and well presented. The bed was very comfortable.

The restaurant lacked atmosphere and clearly catered for touring coach party trade. The dining experience was saved by the exceptional lake views and the quality of the food.

The furnishings in the bar ( tables and seating ) were well worn, marked and in need of replacement and the service was hardly attentive- tables left with spilled drinks from previous customers.

Room Tip: Always insist on a lake view

after a busy year we wanted a quiet weekend away . like others, we went on a deal and had no preconceived expectations . for us it ticked all the boxes. it was peaceful ,relaxing, comfortable, friendly and in a fabulous location . the breakfasts were spot on and the one dinner we had was lovely. i can now agree with many of the other reviewers but only in a positive way . The Belsfield has a wonderful history and its prominent position makes for some awesome views . we had snow on the mountains . a special thanks to al the staff and in particular to Ian the bar manager who went out of his way to make us welcome . all in it was a great weekend and we intend to return in Jan /feb cheers Stephen M

we where a bit worried about the reviews about the hotel being dated, the hotel is a bit dated but makes up for this with the great service wonderful food and great staff the views from the restrurant where unbelievable, plus a great pool could have done with a bucket of water for the sauna. but we'll be back.

Room Tip: have a lake view if possible

This is lovely and I can't understand people down grading it. We got a living social deal and found every aspect of our stay perfect. The staff were attentive, excellent breakfast and the dinner we had was perfect (with a substantial choice even for a veggie like me). Wine price was good, about £16 per bottle. Being able to eat with a magnificent view of the lake is amazing.

This hotel is like a blast from the past. It's like stepping back into the Victorian era and enjoying all the splendour. Just being able to walk a very short distance to the town is so convenient. Even in bad weather it's no problem.

We used the pool too. It's great because you can enjoy this all to yourself mostly. Also there's adequate facilities to change, shower, clean towels and lockers. The sauna wasn't working whilst we stayed though sadly.

Got to give a section just for the staff before I sign off. From the minute we booked in, to breakfast, dinner and general reception service they are very friendly and helpful.

I would say you will not be disappointed with this hotel and will love it as much as we did.

Room Tip: Ask for a lake view

We booked this hotel through Groupon and having visited the lakes before, we had seen this hotel from the lake and on outside appearances this looked a very grand looking building and some where we wanted to visit. However on arrival it became apparent that what was once a very grand and majestic hotel was now in need of some TLC. The staff were lovely, but the building is very tired and dated, but has tonnes of potential and hope that someone will take it on board and bring it back to its former grandeur.

This hotel looks lovely a nice old building in a superb setting outside Beautiful views from the dining room, lounges and the bar . The staff were very attentive, polite and helpful, Our main problems were with the hot water and the shower .

We stayed just for the one night and used the showers twice . Using the shower was a total shock as the water was non existing left running for 10 minutes it was so poor i could not rinse the shampoo out of my hair and really thin towels which again very unpleasant to use . It was a very unpleasant shower.
I reported this to reception on the morning we left only to be told that this would be look at .Not sure if they completely understood what we were saying to them
Good point would be the hot breakfasts buffet style good choice and very well cooked .

Would stay again if only for views across lake and location to town center

Room Tip: pay extra for view it has to be worth it

I booked one nights accommodation for my partners 40 th , paid £117 for bed only !
On arrival to reception we were greeted by nobody & rang bell several times before going in search for staff .
Room no 28 , entered room & immediately got smell of damp & very cold , turned radiator on to full hoping to warm room for my return later that evening !
Room was generally ok but for the cost I really expected something special but was very disappointed , I entered the very dated bathroom to find pubic hair lined around the top of the bath rim to the shower end , I turned on the shower to be greeted by a very poor drizzle of water which struggled to remove the hair !
We left the room for the afternoon & even considered finding a more suitable hotel, we returned after several hours again to a cold room damp smelling room , the radiator I earlier turned on to full was nothing more than luke warm & that's being kind to say the least.
Checked out as early as possible next morning & handed my customer feedback form to the receptionist who rudely failed to ask about our stay or even bother to really say anything , my feedback was very literally tossed to one side so I requested that it be given to the General Manager .
Its a total shame that this Hotel failed my expectations as the views & location etc are exceptional.
Overall : Very overated in its own description , very over priced & poor value for money !

Room Tip: I really could not recommend to anyone !
