“Disappointing stay”
Reviewed 7 July 2014

Arrived on miserable day after flight from Dublin, although after 3pm were informed room not ready ,when we asked what time it would be we're given a short reply of ready when it's ready. When we did get a room ,no porter to help with bags, then the most overpowering smell of paint. My husband is an asthmatic and found this stay very difficult,I,m not but was still unpleasant.
More was to come ,the view was of the back of the building overlooking a roof covered with building rumble, windows were still masked with tape on the outside.the compendium was a few pieces of paper stapled together giving no info of local area.
Self service breakfast on the Sunday was fine ,however the next day nothing was on display,no menu but were asked what we would like.Amused to receive one poached egg the size of a golf ball sitting on a slice of toast and my husband about two tablespoons of baked beans on one slice of toast.not sure what we paid for this as we ordered through travel agent but don't believe it was cheap.next day as we had prepaid had to endure again, asked for two eggs and more toast.
Perhaps it would have been better to shut hotel down while renovations were being done ,thankfully this was our only negative stay in England but disappointing enough to want to put it in writing.

Thank you for your recent review on Tripadvisor.

I am sorry to hear that your stay was "disappointing". Here at the Belsfield we have set ourselves high standards and we of course are most disappointed if we have failed to match these standards.

we aim to ensure that each and every bedrooms is ready for no later than 3pm and on most occasions, rooms are ready sooner for our guests to begin relaxing and enjoy their stay. I am sorry that this was not the case during your stay.

The smell of paint, once again is not acceptable and I do apologise for this. My only explanation is that this smell has come from a corridor in the vicinity, as we would not let out a room that smells of paint. We will of course have to double check the area in future and learn from our mistake.

My apologies once again.

Kind regards,

Joseph Cobb

On booking the hotel we knew that it was still undergoing refurbishment and decided to book due to good reviews on trip advisor. So glad we did! What an amazing hotel! Perfect location in a beautiful setting.
After booking, the hotel emailed us informing us of the refurb with the option of moving our stay back after the refurb was finished. We decided to go ahead with our planned stay.
The main rooms (drawing room, restaurant etc) of the hotel plus bedrooms are all renovated and to a high standard. The only part of the hotel needing completing are a few rooms which aren't in use and corridors. The renovation had no effect on our stay what so ever.
We payed a bit extra for a lake view room (number 22) which I would highly recommend! Wow! Amazing views, and well worth the extra money.
Service is extremely good. The staff are friendly and very helpful.
We tried the restaurant on our first evening, 3 courses for £20. Beautiful food and great service.
The drawing room is perfect for some quiet time or afternoon tea with views of the lake.
I was so sad to leave the hotel but can't wait to come again after the refurb is complete.

Thank you for your recent review on Tripadvsior.

I am incredibly pleased to read that you find the hotel to be beautiful and stunning and specifically enjoy the location of the hotel. we believe that we are extremely fortunate to have such stunning, unimpeded views of Lake Windermere and the fells beyond, whilst being close enough to Bowness village itself to enjoy the hustle and bustle if you choose.

The refurbishment is something that of our guests tend to comment on and we are extremely proud of the Laura Ashley finishings throughout the hotel. Whether that be the bedrooms that have been refurbished from top to bottom or the stunning lounges, restaurant, Brasserie or reception.

Thank you once again for your review and hopefully we can welcome you back to the Belsfield in the future.

We stayed here this past weekend, as a gift for our silver wedding. The hotel was under going some renovations, but this did not impact on our stay at all. Our room was decorated to a very high standard, there where tea/coffee facilities in the room, iron and board, plenty of storage space, small Laura Ashley tolietries in the bathroom, etc. The room was so clean, a credit to the cleanimg staff. We had a lake view room, and the view, as you can imagine was great.

A special thank you to a young man called Csaba, whom we met at breakfast, he was very attentive, pleasant and friendly, and gave me good tips on making goulash. It was lovely to have a conversation with him. We would both like to wish him well for his future. Also Dan who we met on the evening serving drinks outside, a friendly man. who gave me a tip on where I could photograph bats! I love wildlife photography so that tip was especially welcome.

The hotel had a pool area, which was kept very clean, and heated to just the right temperature, their where planty of towels in the changing areas. The pool was open from 7am till 9pm.

There was a varied choice at breakfast, cereals, toast, fruits, juices, cold meats, and the usual full Eglish fare, sausages, beans, bacon etc.

We would stay here again, the staff very helpful, friendly, hotel was located in a excellent place right on the lake front. If you are looking for something very grand, and English this is the place to stay

Room Tip: Ask for a lake view, take some swim wear.

Hotel was in the middle of a massive refurb. Did not know until we arrived that all the rooms had been painted and our room had a really strong smell of paint. We had our 5 month old baby with us and our 2 other children. We all got really ill from the paint fumes and had chest infections for weeks after. I have been meaning to contact the hotel since our return but have been so busy I have not had a chance. We have stayed at the hotel a number of times before and have enjoyed our times there before but this time it has left me with a bad taste in my mouth and will need to speak to the hotel before deciding if we want to risk staying there again.

Thank you for your recent review on Tripadvisor.

I am sorry to read that your stay with us here at the Belsfield was not up to standard. We do set ourselves incredibly high standards and are always incredibly disappointed if we have not lived up to these.

I have began an investigation as to how you were not informed about the refubsihment and I can only apologise for this. Our policy throughout the refurbishment has been to inform each and every guest that the refurbishment is ongoing, in order to prevent any surprises.

Further more, I am sorry that you could smell paint in your room. Of course we would not dream of letting a room that smells of paint and I wonder if the smell had come from a corridor or elsewhere. Even still, I do apologise once more.

Thank you for your review once again.

We returned from this hotel today, after a two-day break. The renovations are well under way and ongoing. New carpets were being fitted in part of the hotel when we were there. This did not cause any inconvenience at all. Other work had ceased for the weekend.

The reception area is brand new extension to the main building. It has only been in use for a week. The area is light and airy, with plenty of seating. The new decoration has been sympathetically added with a nodding acknowledgement to the character and age of this fine building.

Our room was well decorated and immaculate. Extras included use of a mini safe, an iron and a hairdryer. Internet access is free. (Our download speed as 7.5Mbps.) Tea and coffee facilites are included, as are mini bottles of shampoo etc. in the bathroom. A nice feature was having a heated floor in the bathroom.

Other areas on the ground floor have been fitted out to a very good standard, including the lounges and the dining room. Both these areas have stunning views over Windermere. In my opinion the hotel has the best possible location near Lake Windermere. It is very near to the ticket terminals for the lake cruises and for access to the town.

The hotel has its own car park, as you might expect. This became full on Saturday as new guests arrived.

Breakfast was served between 8am and 10am. The cost of a full breakfast was £12.95, which seemed excessive compared with prices in the town. A continental breakfast was £7.50. You may be better off saving your cash and going to the local cafes.

I was impressed with this hotel. It clearly needed major refurbishment and it's a delight to see the results so far. As the work approaches completion, it must surely improve even more. I hope to return to see the finished article.

Room Tip: Ask for one with a view of Lake Windermere.

Thank you for your recent review on Tripadvisor.

I am delighted that you enjoyed your stay and the refurbishment in particular. We are very excited by the refurbishment programme which has seen our bedrooms fully finished with Laura Ashley furnishings. The work hasn't been restricted to our bedrooms however, as the lounges, Brasserie, Restaurant, function room, reception and bar have also been given the Laura Ashley magic.

The internet is something that our guests rarely comment on. However we believe that our internet should be level par with the big cities. This is why we are due to become one of the first places in the Windermere area to access fibre optic broadband. This should give our guests in excess of 40mbps speed.

Thank you once again for your review and hopefully we can welcome you back to the Belsfield in the future.

The hotel was under renovation when we visited in June this year but you can already see the grand old dame emerging from her slumber. The refurbishment of the interiors in Laura Ashley products made the guest rooms and public areas very cosy and homely and it was very comfortable to just sit in the library with the morning papers, or in the beautifully manicured lawn enjoying the million dollar view of the mere (lake) at afternoon tea.

We took 2 connecting rooms and both rooms were furnished differently - Love the stand alone bath! It felt like a homestay. Be sure to ask for a room facing the mere as the views are just breathtaking, even when the weather was not good.

The staff at the hotel were very personable and provided excellent service, remembering the preferences of most of the guests. One of the waiters noticed that i was not comfortable sitting in the sun and when i went down to the lawn the next, they had already prepared a sun shade at my regular table! They even offered to take a breakfast tray up to the rooms for my daughters who were too lazy to come down to breakfast!

The newly furnished dining rooms, again with Laura Ashley interiors is a good place to have your meals. We chose to sit in the smaller dining area, versus the big dining room as it was more cosy there.

The produce is very fresh and the chef is quite creative with his dishes. They serve very generous portions and we wisen up and shared our starters/mains which worked out well as we could have variety in our meals. The fish and chips, we feel is the best in the area!

We were going to rent a car for our 5 day stay but due to jet-lag, we decided not to. It worked out well as the property is very centrally located. The charming town of bowness is just a 2 minute walk away and we cab to restaurants and rented a guide and car to take us out for our hikes for 2 of the days we were there.

There are lots of open spaces for children and we were tempted to take a picnic out but ran out of time. We took early morning walks around the mere and the girls took the row boats out - all at the front of the hotel. Despite these conveniences, the property remains very private, not noisy at all -

We love this place and will definitely be back again! Can't wait to see the completed refurbishment, especially the gardens.

Room Tip: Ask for rooms facing the mere! The views from the corner rooms are astounding!

Thank you for your recent review on Tripadvisor.

I am incredibly pleased that you rated your recent stay as five star and specifically enjoyed the refurbishment. we are very proud of the work to date. This includes the bedrooms, the reception, restaurant, brasserie and lounges. Most of which share a panoramic view over Lake Windermere and the fells beyond.

The food is of course a talking point and it is nice to read that this was something that you enjoyed. we have recently created a second menu for the restaurant; which will now focus on a fine dining experience, with specific attention to detail with both flavour and presentation. Whilst the Brasseire focuses on traditional English dishes with more of a rustic feel.

Thank you once again for your review and hopefully we can welcome you back to the Belsfield in the future.

My mum & I stayed for a weekend last Oct and fell in love with this hotel. The location, the views, the atmosphere & surrounds all made for a perfect stay. The room was clean & comfortable. The restaurant & bar both food & service all outstanding. Easy walk down to the water's edge & close to shops. Would highly recommend this hotel as the place to stay in the Lakes District.

I am delighted that you found the Belsfield to be "the perfect place to stay" and enjoyed the views in particular. We are incredibly fortunate to have such outstanding views of Lake Windermere, Belle Isle in the foreground and the fells beyond. The location of the hotel does also lend itself to those who wish to venture out in to Bowness villiage further more, as we are only a 2 minute walk away.

The restaurant and it's panoramic view of the lake is regularly commented on and I am most pleased that you enjoyed this. We have recently created a fine dining, 5 course experience in the restaurant which focuses on attention to detail with presentation as well as flavouring.
