“Pleasant Stay”
Reviewed 21 June 2010

We stayed 2 nights here in June 2010 on a travel offers deal, paying only £35 per person per night for dinner, bed & breakfast. Staff were all foreign but polite. Our room wasn't the best, but we were offered lake view or a suite if we were prepared to pay extra to upgrade. We decided to stay put, it was clean and the bed very comfortable indeed, no view except over the kitchen fans! The swimming pool was warm and clean and clean towels were provided, sauna not very hot, but since it was raining, we found it most pleasant down there. Food - breakfast is buffet style and you help yourself, there was plenty of choice and the food was generally good. Dinner is a choice of 3 courses and waiter served, it was not very hot but generally good. For what we paid it was good value and we were given a lake view table on 2 occasions, which was really nice. The hotel is delightfully old fashioned and the clientel are retired or elderly in the main. The location is superb, looking down to Bowness and Lake Windermere and it is in a quiet part of town. If this hotel was refurbished as it probably should be, you would pay a great deal more to stay, but we had nothing to complain about for the price we paid.

A barman who seemed like he had been kicked out of the wrong side of the bed that morning. So these 6 adults and 3 kids didn't stay for even one drink let alone an overnight stay. If the manager can't get this simple aspect (staff behaviour) of his business under control then what chance the really important parts? Our first visit and our last.

We had a very pleasant stay at the Belsfield Hotel. We attended a Wedding at the hotel, party, which was organised very well by the hotel staff. The food was fantastic & the service was very good during our weekend stay. The only disapointment was that the bathroom in our room was in need of updating. Apart from that everything was ok

My husband made the above booking for a family reunion some time ago, paying about £1,000.00.

When we arrived it appeared everything was in order and we were quite rushed as we were dining elsewhere in Bowness.

We were staying in room 36 which is a superior room with view. We appreciated that the hotel was in the middle of refurbishments but we discovered that the bed was appalling. The reception staff were very pleasant and tried to find another room but there were none with the view we had wanted so we were reduced to asking for a top sheet and, since it was warm, we slept on top of the duvet to minimise the lumps with the sheet over us. Not really what we expected and even if the room is about to be refurbished it should be a matter of priority to put a new mattress on the bed.

We decided to eat at the hotel outside on the Saturday as it was a lovely evening. We all had a starter and then fish and chips. The man in charge of the bar said we would have to pay for the drinks, starters, main courses etc. as we ordered them. We did say that 6 of the 8 of us were staying at the hotel and that we could put it on a room or pay at the end for it all. This he said we could not do because of people running off and not paying. We protested to the reception staff who said they could do nothing as the barman was senior to them and, it appeared, effectively running the hotel on this Saturday night.

So we did pay as we went but of course, by the time we got to dessert we were told we could not have anything as it was after 9.00 p.m.

One of the fish and chip meals seemed strange and we realised that smoked fish had been used instead of fresh. We asked about this and it appeared a great joke to the barman who said he would tell the chef. We did gather there had been enough fresh fish but a mistake had been made. No apology forthcoming for this by anyone.

Breakfast was served as if it were a school canteen. Staff scraped egg from a stainless steel catering holder into the nice cast iron dishes in full view of the guests. Bacon piled up in greasy lumps and fried eggs left to become rubbery. When my husband asked for fresh eggs he was told to think of the starving children in Africa by a young male staff member. Then the same boy brought one egg on a plate and slammed it down in front of my husband. We didn't have breakfast again after this incident on the Sunday morning.

Had it not been paid for in advance the two remaining couples on the Sunday night would have checked out.

We had wondered why the hotel was quiet on the Saturday night when everywhere else was packed with people. We soon realised why. Each night the bar shuts at 10.30 p.m. even on the Saturday and you had to go to reception to get someone to come and serve drinks.

The hotel is in a lovely situation but let down by this poor service and uncomfortable rooms. Probably the worst hotel we have ever been to.

We visited the Belsfield hotel to attend our daughters wedding. The hotel is in a fantastic location, perfect for this type of event. Rodger the hotel General Manager did an excellent job, ensuring that every detail of the wedding went without a hitch. We highly recommend this hotel for either a formal occasion or leisure break.

We visited this hotel with a big group of friends and they made us very welcome and dealt with us very cheerfully and efficiently, the staff were lovely. I can't comment on prices as we got a special group deal, all-in, which was very reasonable and less than the prices I have seen quoted here for individual travelers. It is a vast, rambling Victorian pile with all sorts of eccentric extensions, rather tired decor, and no access to free wi-fi, you have to pay £10 for 24 hours which is a rip-off.
The TV in our room was a flat screen which only received Channel 5 and some french programme, other people in our party had TV tuning problems too. On the plus side, our room was spotlessly clean, with a large en-suite bathroom.
Food: Breakfasts were good standard Full English from a buffet. Dinners were a bit like the hotel itself: Large, old-fashioned and a bit lacking in taste. I ordered the vegetarian dish of the day one evening and got noodles with roasted veg, which came on a bed of mashed spud (Everything comes on a bed of mashed spud, even the new potatoes and the roast potatoes....) with the saltiest sauce I have ever tasted. It was revolting. Stick to meat with two veg (plus mash) and it's OK.
The swimming pool is distinctly chilly and a bit spartan and you have to switch the sauna on half an hour before you plan to use it to allow it to heat up.
BUT, the location is unbeatable, bang on the lakeshore where the boats dock, in a charming little village, masses of free parking space and service with a smile at all hours of the day and night. So yes, we had a great time.

We were recommended the Belfield Hotel by the Tourist information centre in Windermere. On arriving we were impressed with the location and outside spaces. On getting inside we asked for a lakeside view and advised that this would be extra and for the first night £150 and for a second night a further £110. We thought at this price it would be a nice and comfortable room. Fortunately while checking in another couple were haggling the price of there room which was not a lakeside view so we also got £50 of the booking. So if you do go to the Belsfield make sure you haggle the price.
After checking in we went to our room via some corrridors that were straight out of the film the shining, I was expecting children on tricycles!! The room was not much better. the carpet was dirty and floor boards creaked, the shower room was a converted cupboard with no window and smelled really bad and the basin was in the bedroom. The bed was the most uncomfortable bed I have slept on in a long time, in fact I've had better sleeps when out camping. There were a gap of about an inch at the bottom of the room door so we could hear everything from the corridor. We did use the pool and sauna area once and it was clean and well maintained, but be aware if you have children as the area is unattended and not supervised, OK for adults but not for children.
I have to admit the the location and the view were really nice but I still not return for these alone.
