We spent three days at the Old England Hotel with members of our family en route to Scotland.
After a warm welcome at reception and efficient check in, we went for a walk and found many lovely little restaurants. We can recommend Rumours Italian restaurant which was excellent just a short walk up the main street from hotel.
We ate in the hotel the second night in the a la carte restaurant overlooking the Lake, where we found the meal to be very good, although the service was very slow. Breakfast was excellent, again pity about the slow service. The Spa and gym area was exceptionally good.

Overall we had an enjoyable stay .. A trip on Lake Windermere is only a short stroll down to the waters edge. We went to Miller Howe for afternoon tea which is well worth a visit.

Room Tip: Definitely book lake view room

We have just returned from a 3 night stay at the Macdonald old England hotel in Bowness. Our room was a cassic king/double with a beautiful view over lake windermere- the room itself was a little dated but the view compensated for that. The room was spacious and extremely clean and was serviced daily.

We ate in the restaurant the first night as part of our package- we were not disappointed- the meal was fantastic and the service very good. We enjoyed the breakfast and did not encounter any problems with slow service (mentioned in previous reviews)- we were in fact very impressed at how quickly our cooked breakfasts arrived. In addition to the cooked breakfast, guests could help themselves to the extensive buffet breakfast of cereals, fruits, pastries etc.The waiters/waitresses very extremely polite and efficient.

We enjoyed the leisure facilities especially the gym the equipment was up to date and the gym itself was fairly quiet so we never had to wait to use any peice of equipment.. We also went to the spa for facials and massages- what a treat! Katy my therapist deserves a special mention- she was extremley friendly, efficient and professional. She also displayed considerable knowledge regarding the products used.

Check in was speedy, we were made to feel welcome straight away. All the staff in the hotel appeared to genuinely care about providing an excellant service- the manager should be very proud of his team. We had a small hiccup on check out as the bill was calculated to be approx £70 more than it should have been- the receptionist however listened to what i had to say and quickly rectified the mistake. All in all an enjoyable stay.

Five star rooms, service and furnishing....but only a One Star Breakfast.
Plates v.hot but food cold, the full English I had was greasy and sparce
in quantity .... certainly not worth £18.75 per head

Room Tip: The Suites with private balconies are truly excellent. The lake view could not be bettered, but the cost of those rooms are obviously high.

We used to stay at the Old England years ago and decided we would call in for a coffee to see it was still the same, unfortunately it was not, and the prices are very expensive, staff too busy chatting to each other to worry about the customers. The decor was good and the staff dress was immaculate what a shame they could not translate the dress into customer courtesy. Definitely not worth the money I will carry on going to the Belsfield and the Hillthwaite House.

Great location in Bowness, less than 5 minutes to the shore of the lake but also right in the heart of the town.
