“Lovely stay”
Reviewed 30 October 2012

stayed for 1 night October 2012. Check in was very efficient and staff were lovely. Room exceeded our expectations enormous bed large room and a walk in shower as well as a bath. Evening meal started off poor with being left at the door to the restaurant with no one to greet us. The food was exceptional but the wine was extortionate. Lovely breakfast again left waiting to be seated but the food was of an extremely high standard. Agree with a previous comment plates so hot but food luke warm. Used the spa facilities which were lovely although had to wait half an hour to get into the pool due to high numbers. On the whole a lovely stay and would definately go again

Stayed for one night on 25th October for my husbands birthday. Thought we had got a good deal for one nights B&B in a feature suite, so was really looking forward to our brief stay. Took time figuring out where to park, ended up in their tiny underground garage and managed to get the last space. Checked in, staff somewhat indifferent, but efficient, raced up to our room, expecting it to be similar to the photos on hotels website - wrong! Shockingly disappointed, room was small, dark, small seating area with a tatty sofa, curtains/drapes had seen better days, wallpaper starting to peel off the ceiling, dirty finger marks all over the bathroom door. On the plus side, good views of the lake, bed was large (albeit, a bit too firm for us), bathroom small but bath was nice and deep and filled very quickly, shower was fine as well. There were two TV's, but only one set of controls (poor reception, but not everyone would bother to switch them on, so not likely to be a deal breaker). One small free bottle of water included in what turned out to be an exorbitant price for our stay. The corridors leading to our room were small and narrow, slightly surprised to note fire door from our room into corridor was place right next to our bed, if kept open could easily have laid in bed and reached out my hand and touched the outer corridor wall, it's that narrow.

Depressed at the daylight robbery of our bank account we headed out for dinner and went to the local Chinese over the road which was very nice, although lacking in atmosphere.

Back at the hotel our room was on the first floor so lots of loud door banging noises emanating up from the ground floor, expecting a sleepless night we were thankful that the noises subsided and stopped by about 11pm.

Breakfast was held in a nice room overlooking the lake and all the tables are set up so everyone gets a decent view. Good selection of cold food, ordered the full English breakfast, which tipped us over the edge - scalding hot plate that would easily result in third degree burns if touched, but food was luke warm! Portion size was poor as well. On the up side, toast was nice.

Checked out after breakfast by indifferent reception staff yet again. To add insult to injury on arrival at home, we discovered we had left a pair of trousers behind. Housekeeping staff very helpful and have promised to get them back to us.

Conclusion: very overpriced, would not revisit, one for tourists perhaps.

Top Tip: if booking on line and expecting rooms that are shown on the Macdonald website, phone before you arrive and check that you are getting what you are paying for.

My wife and I stayed here in August 2012. We have stayed here before, many yrs ago.
This hotel is quite large and has a prime position in Bowness.
This feels like a real treat when you stay here. The staff are excellent - polite, friendly and professional. The food here was great (only had breakfast, but it was lovely). The bar/ patio area has a lovely (amazing) view of lake Windermere, and was great for afternoon tea or something a little stronger, to enjoy this superb backdrop.
Our room was a bit cramped and presented us with the road noise from the main road outside - I never realised how busy/noisy that actually was!
Bowness is OK, but I'm more of a Keswick man.
Re the MacDonald hotels - there are 2 others in the Lake District, one in Ullswater and one in Grasmere. I would choose either one of these over the Old England, but that's just a location thing.
If you chose to stay in the Old England, you will not be disappointed!

This was our second stay at The Old England Hotel and Spa. It was good enough two years ago to make us want to return; in that time it has moved up a gear and we were very impressed. The vast lounge has been redecorated, and is a great place for pre-dinner drinks, relaxing with a book and the views over the lake, or tucking into a cream tea. Dinner on each night was of a high standard and the service was excellent. Indeed every member of staff we had dealings with made an effort: their training had worked, they were motivated, and they understood the importance of good customer service towards their own job satisfaction, it seemed. Whilst dinner was certainly good, we were glad we were eating on a dinner, bed and breakfast deal as the menu prices for the food were steep for what came on the plate: good food but not huge portions. Mind you, the lamb cutlets were awfully good. The hotel was busy when we were there and the staff had to work hard to get all the breakfasts served - but if they were hassled they did keep on smiling. On the second morning, coming down to quite a queue to get a table for breakfast, it was announced that service would be extended by an hour. Fair enough: we went and read our books for 30 minutes, returned for a leisurely breakfast - and we were practically the last to leave the dining room. We'll be back, in two years, or less.

Room Tip: Try and get a lake view. It's barely worth being there if you don't!

Magnificent view of the lake from bed room, bar and restaurant.Excellent service in the restaurant - the hot breakfast came in a couple of minutes and when the the coffee went cold it was replaced immediately with a piping hot cafetiaire.
The bar/ loung area is huge and almost on top of the lake, only seperated by the hotel garden.

Room Tip: ASk for the best room

We stayed for only one night but wish we had booked for more. The staff were all very helpful and they had been trained well in that the should be available without being intrusive. On arrival we parked outside the hotel so that we could unload our luggage, check in and go to our room and unpack. We then went to park our car but were offered valet parking, we did say no as the car park was only a 3/4 minute walk away. The room was spacious with an excellent view of the lake, very comfortable but the bathroom did need some slight attention. We had dinner in the hotel and must say it was delicious, varied choice and the service was just as expected. The room was quiet and all the amenities worked including the shower which had power, not like most hotels. Breakfast was in the same dining room overlooking the lake, what more do you need than a well cooked breakfast and stunning views.
We fully intend to return to the Old England and have now started looking at other hotels in the chain.
