“No Jacuzzi”
Reviewed 5 November 2012

I like a good spa - time to relax and wind down in a hot bubbling jacuzzi....... wait! No jacuzzi!! I've never been to a spa that is totally lacking in the jacuzzi area. Especially one that has recently spent a good sum of money refurbishing! Plus, where else is there to sit? Well, there was approximately four loungers which were all covered in other peoples towels. Other than that a very nice sauna and steam room. That's it for seating. If you just want to sit/lay and relax then space is limited. The pool was good enough, but a little on the cool side. The aromatherapy shower is a lovely touch and the ice room is great, very novel. The changing rooms were comfortable, albeit a little small, but there are plug sockets for your own dryer/straighteners etc. From what I could tell, if you wanted to use the toilet you had to come out of the pool area, out and through the changing rooms, along a short corridor and through a door on the end. Not great design to be honest. We didn't see much of the staff, however when we did enquire about treatments they were less than forthcoming so we decided to spend our money elsewhere. Final comment is that the showers in the changing rooms were tepid and I was looking forward to a nice hot shower on a very cold day so slightly disappointing.

Overall I wouldn't return for a spa weekend with my girlfriends. It was adequate for a coupe of hours but no more. The views are lovely, but difficult to enjoy from poolside level. And the lighting makes it all look a bit dull - not a patch on the photos.

The room we had with lake view was clean and tidy. The spa & pool is excellent but can only hold 25 people at any one time, which meant at peak times you have to wait over 2 hours befor being allowed in. The eve meal in the evening was first class and the choice of wine was good also. Breakfast was good but the service was slightly chaotic..which i am sure wa only a blip. The D, B&B rate was not cheap for night but on balance worth it.

What can I say, my wife and I decided to stay for 1 night, Sunday, bed and breakfast. We arrived earlier than check in. Our room was ready and I handed over my car keys for valet parking. Our room was a double aspect lake view, very big, clean although a little tired. The pool area was stunning even if the pool was a little cold. Breakfast in the morning was amazing. I have stated in many hotels in the Lakes but this is the best. Best location, best views, best staff and best value. Will definitely be back.. Well done Old England staff and Management and thank you for helping to make our anniversary memorable..

Stayed here for three days during October half term. My husband has always wanted to stay here so we thought we'd treat ourselves! Called to book a family room and asked about access for our disabled son, they said they could find us a cheaper room and put an extra bed in it for him, which was fine. Arrived and they had saved us a parking space right outside the entrance which was ours for the duration of the stay. The concierge helped us to park, with our luggage and showed us to our room - very helpful!
The room was in the attic, it was lovely, big and clean and they had put a bunk bed in the lounge area for our son. Bathroom was beautiful, big and very clean with Arran aromatic toiletries. Would have preferred a room not in he attic so we could see out of the window properly but would have probably cost much more!
We had dinner bed and breakfast rate. Breakfasts and dinners were delicious with plenty of choice. Only thing I would say is the service was quite slow but I think that was down to lack of staff rather than efficiency - same in the lounge, management - employ more!!
We had a wonderful relaxing couple of days and will definitely try to come back, not even the large bill on checkout put us off!! (We did have some bottles of wine with that too!)

stayed for 1 night October 2012. Check in was very efficient and staff were lovely. Room exceeded our expectations enormous bed large room and a walk in shower as well as a bath. Evening meal started off poor with being left at the door to the restaurant with no one to greet us. The food was exceptional but the wine was extortionate. Lovely breakfast again left waiting to be seated but the food was of an extremely high standard. Agree with a previous comment plates so hot but food luke warm. Used the spa facilities which were lovely although had to wait half an hour to get into the pool due to high numbers. On the whole a lovely stay and would definately go again

Stayed for one night on 25th October for my husbands birthday. Thought we had got a good deal for one nights B&B in a feature suite, so was really looking forward to our brief stay. Took time figuring out where to park, ended up in their tiny underground garage and managed to get the last space. Checked in, staff somewhat indifferent, but efficient, raced up to our room, expecting it to be similar to the photos on hotels website - wrong! Shockingly disappointed, room was small, dark, small seating area with a tatty sofa, curtains/drapes had seen better days, wallpaper starting to peel off the ceiling, dirty finger marks all over the bathroom door. On the plus side, good views of the lake, bed was large (albeit, a bit too firm for us), bathroom small but bath was nice and deep and filled very quickly, shower was fine as well. There were two TV's, but only one set of controls (poor reception, but not everyone would bother to switch them on, so not likely to be a deal breaker). One small free bottle of water included in what turned out to be an exorbitant price for our stay. The corridors leading to our room were small and narrow, slightly surprised to note fire door from our room into corridor was place right next to our bed, if kept open could easily have laid in bed and reached out my hand and touched the outer corridor wall, it's that narrow.

Depressed at the daylight robbery of our bank account we headed out for dinner and went to the local Chinese over the road which was very nice, although lacking in atmosphere.

Back at the hotel our room was on the first floor so lots of loud door banging noises emanating up from the ground floor, expecting a sleepless night we were thankful that the noises subsided and stopped by about 11pm.

Breakfast was held in a nice room overlooking the lake and all the tables are set up so everyone gets a decent view. Good selection of cold food, ordered the full English breakfast, which tipped us over the edge - scalding hot plate that would easily result in third degree burns if touched, but food was luke warm! Portion size was poor as well. On the up side, toast was nice.

Checked out after breakfast by indifferent reception staff yet again. To add insult to injury on arrival at home, we discovered we had left a pair of trousers behind. Housekeeping staff very helpful and have promised to get them back to us.

Conclusion: very overpriced, would not revisit, one for tourists perhaps.

Top Tip: if booking on line and expecting rooms that are shown on the Macdonald website, phone before you arrive and check that you are getting what you are paying for.
