Stayed 1 night as a treat for myself & my wife. The hotels location couldn't be better - right in the heart of the small town close to many pubs & restaurants and overlooking Lake Windermere. Was met by friendly and efficient reception staff and the concierge who was a particularly nice chap parked our car for us.

Our room was very spacious, recently refurbished and decorated in a neo-classic style, with a nice view of the lake. Worth noting here that an earlier quick look around the hotel when we were considering staying revealed that some of the "classic" (hotel speak for basic and tired) rooms are to be avoided.

Enjoyed a drink through the day on the main bar terrace, where the view is spectacular and later in the library. Both times the service was very friendly & courteous however the bar prices are eyewateringly steep - can't help thinking they must suffer from the amount of competition in town and perhaps a more pragmatic approach to their pricing might in the long term benefit both themselves and their guests.

Decided not to dine in the hotel partly for this reason and partly because a bit of Internet research had revealed a really nice looking restaurant nearby we both wanted to check out.

Great nights sleep - none of the pitfalls associated with some hotel rooms. Room was quiet and not too hot - bed was firm but comfortable.

Breakfast in the morning was very civilised - enjoyed the view while obviously well trained staff presented us with our choice of hot food cooked to order. Great coffee.

It must be really difficult for hoteliers to please everyone that comes through the door - I'm sure their guests can be a fickle bunch - and when the tariff is as high as the Old England's they probably have a right to be picky - but I've got to say the hotel delivers what it promises. A lovely relaxing environment in a great location with good standards of service. We'd recommend it and may well return.

Although a little disappointed at first , as was expecting a lake view ,which we did if we looked beyond the slate wall facing our room .but the room was good clean and had everything you needed .the breakfast on the first day was lovely but on the second day was awfull ,I think it was busy so we were put in a corner in the second room and waited at least 45 mins for someone to serve us with a hot breakfast .we ate in the resturant and it was really good .the drinks are very pricey and I think that if they didn't charge such rip off prices the bar would be busier .all in all would go again but only on an offer

We stayed in April 2013 for 4 nights and had a wonderful time. Our room (239) had a view of the lake and was very well appointed including a spacious bathroom with separate walk-in shower as well as a bath. We purchased the dinner, bed and breakfast option which was good value. We enjoyed all the meals in the restaurant. Without exception the staff were most helpful and attentive. Very efficient valet car parking service provided.

Room Tip: Ask for a lake view.

Stayed here 2 nights cost over 200 quid, room over looks skip and converted house room 136 ... Depressing! Pity is it's a nice room that is looked after perfectly well by guest services... On to reception now! Andrew on reception needs training ' anything we asked him was a problem.. He constantly made excuses about not actioning our requests,he was rude and dismissive ... Honestly a worst ever on reception ... Such a pity to write such a bad review... But felt honesty required ...

We stayed in feb 2013 for 2 nights (thank goodness it wasn't longer)and on arrival were pleased with the location of hotel, but that's about the only good thing I can say. We were allocated room 307 which turned out to be the damp armpit of the hotel. It overlooked the lake which would have been fantastic if we could have seen the view thru the condensation on window. The bathroom was so damp the tiles were almost falling off the walls ( they moved if you touched them) other tiles had obviously fell off in the past and had been stuck on upside down. There was a massive damp patch on the ceiling outside the room which had not even been repaired or painted and the overall smell of dampness was most noticeable when we returned too the room after a spell away. The corridors outside our room was congested to say the least - dirty laundry empty beer bottles and various trolleys used by staff. The breakfast was just about edible on the first morning but after a very long wait on the second morning the breakfast that was presented to us was disgusting to say the least. I think this hotel trades on its fabulous location by the lake but honestly I would recommend you look for alternative accommodation if staying in bowness.

Four of us stayed there quite recently...the hotel's image is always decided by the reception stafe....rude, unsmiling, ignorant and unhelpful comes to mind. Do not stay in the rooms that purportedly are supposed to over look the lake in the on the first and second floors...the bathroom door opens against the sink... room 101(of all rooms) is not fit for two people, it is drab. We moved to another floor, the same thing there but slightly larger...the hanging space was virtualy non existant.... may have been suitable for one person but not two. These were supposed to be executive rooms.. what a joke. No safe in the rooms that worked. Apprently we were ''lucky''.. we had a TV that tuned into more than just two channels. On complaining the only thing that was on offer... so they said, was a garden room...which was unacceptable as it was right next to the bar-lounge, which by the way tends to employ pretty young girls whose command of english is very limited. It seems this hotel is cashing in on the location as opposed to service. Would I stay there again... not a chance...next time I will stay in Ambleside... much better hotels and B & B's with staff attitude that does not say 'take it or leave it.'

Room Tip: go for the 'new build' rooms overlooking the lake...
