“Lovely Wedding Venue”
Reviewed 27 May 2013

We booked the Old England for a small family wedding and additional nights stay. We had selected the Bay room overlooking the gardens and lake to hold our wedding ceremony and wedding breakfast, ideal room for 17 guests. Kim (the events coordinator) helped us for months with our arrangements/questions to ensure the day was just as we wanted it. We also used the Bay room in the mornings; which enabled all 17 guests to share their breakfasts together. All the staff throughout our wedding and stay were extremely friendly and helpful.
All guests were pleased with their rooms, the quality of the food, gardens, lounge area, spa facilities and the location of the hotel.
We had lovely weather which did make the resort very busy.

Stayed in hotel for a small family wedding room fab staff great, everyone greeted you in the morning breakfast had loads of selection. The real charm was the location. Garden sloping towards jetty on the lake with beautiful views but fenced with access by gate so safe for children. Children in the party were treated great no frowns or disapproving looks. Set in small town and right by harbour.

Room Tip: Room no 23 has a terrace overlooking lake.

We married on the 27th of April at a sister hotel, The Randolph in Oxford which was an amazing experience in it's self. We then tucked ourselves away in The Old England hotel to have some time to ourselves. The Honeymoon suite (125) was beautiful. Based on Lake Windermere at Bowness we had a lake side view from our Balcony and also from the bedroom area. We could see the Macdonald and Union Jack flag flying high with the lake behind, stunning. Our suite was well equipped and the small touches like the welcome card from the staff was thoughtful. The Tassimo machine was great and turned us both into fans. Our room was well serviced to a high standard and I particularly liked the toiletries supplied. My partner and I are not slight to say the least and for once there were comfortable fluffy robes which were large enough for us to wear. Much better than the stiff ones we usually come across. The restaurant view across the lake made us want to get up for breakfast and get down early to get a great table. The coffee was unfortunately a tad week but the staff were attentive.
We did use the SPA pool area but didn't have any treatments. The pool was however very cold and a Jacuzzi area would have been nice.
The lounge and bar staff were also very friendly and informative when we asked about the local area. We had our first Macdonald afternoon tea on the day we left and the only way to describe this is Epic! Fresh, variety, well presented and extremely tasty. An afternoon tea will have to go a long way to beat this. If you can't stretch to a stay at a Macdonald a dining experience is a must and at minimum afternoon tea. Afternoon tea will give you a snapshot of the amazing service that awaits. Having experienced this at both The Randolph and The Old England we feel that such high standards must be at the core of the Macdonald chain.
Our Honeymoon was all that we needed it to be, a quiet relaxing experience in a beautiful location where stress and worry drifted away.

Room Tip: Lake side a must and if you can stretch to it suite 125

Almost at the bottom of the main road through Bowness, the Hotel overlooks the Lake Windermere. Find the Church and the Hotel is behind it. The car park only holds about eight vehicles, so park outside the hotel and get directions to their main car park. It is on the other side of the Church but you need a key card to get the banner lifted. The hotel is used by foreign tourists so don't try to book in when their coach has just arrived! Parts of the hotel are old but there is a new wing. All is nicely decorated with a modern feel throughout. We had a room overlooking the lake. The room is large and has all what you would expect. Food at the hotel is good but we found the service be be slow at times. The staff are very helpful and pleasant. Two lifts serve all floors and the dining room is large. A self service breakfast bar has a good variety. The views over the lake and boats are brilliant and the hotel is only a couple of minutes from the steamers which glide the lake. There is a local 'bus service and a variety of shops selling local produce and items. Take clothing for inclement weather - this is The Lakes!

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the lake and gardens.

We booked through booking.com and hadn't paid for a particular room so we were both pleased and surprised to get room 125 which had a double aspect overlooking the lake. We even managed to get into the room about 1130 as we were in the area early. It was a nice large room with 2 chairs so we could sit and watch the boats come in and out having a lovely cup of tea!! The hotel has a nice pool area - decent size pool with sauna and ice room. It also has a gym and spa which we didn't use. Breakfast was a good - nice variety, cold & cooked. We sat out on the terrace and had drinks from the bar - a bit pricey but you're paying for the great location. All the staff were friendly. We paid £244 for 2 nights B&B which for the standard of hotel and the actual room we were allocated was good value.

Room Tip: Room 125 - double aspect overlooking lake

As a Cumbrian residing in Carlisle, we tend to avoid the Lakes during the tourist season as packed with cars, coach trips and day trippers. So it was with some trepidation that we headed to Bowness for a couple of nights over the Bank Holiday week-end. We had managed to secure a family room at the Old England via Superbreaks and was pleasantly surprised at the excellent service levels, quality of room and breakfast. The Lakes can be hit or miss when it comes to customer service, standard of accommodation and food so be warned but I can thoroughly recommend this hotel. Spa and pool were excellent and had a lovely Elemis facial which was reasonably priced. Hotel is in an excellent location and if you arrive by car they will park it for you in their secure car park. Great hotel , would definitely stay here again, and remember to pack your water proofs .
